Nations Cup 2018

Well, it is August 1st, a time when the thoughts of dedicated, Top players of Ticket To Ride turn toward the Nation's Cup Tournament. (At least mine does)
So let us get the Nation's Cup Tournament ball rolling.
(I remember a time 3 years ago when java problems began, and a wise person said: "TTR will become like a family reunion. People will show up once a year for the big event." Well, it is that time to prepare. And of course the big event is the Nation's Cup.)
So, who will coordinate?
I believe we should look for plans of a 6 week total time of the tournament beginning October 1st, and concluding by the middle of November.
This gives people 2 months to develop a Nation's Cup team.
Let us know on this thread if you will be seeking to be on a Nation's Cup team, or especially if you are coordinating one.(you may need to add an email to help connect with people)

Well,
NC could be a reason to try to get java running again. I would participate and organize a German team, not knowing, if its possible.

I can help with something. But only with steam oriented NC. I can’t enter Java.
I discuss with Lexx and we probably will have a team.

I have to agree stason. If we want to create a new community and not try to just survive for some months we need the swap to steam, although I prefered java as platform. I tried it the last weeks, it's different, I lost 100 points , but I think it's necessary...

From my observations, by the way the main difference between steam and java is that nobody does care about points here on steam.

Well, I don't think it depends on the interest of the players on both platforms. It's the entrance, in Java u were welcomed by the first 3 of the ranking, in steam I even don't know yet, where to find the ranking . And ranking is less interesting with those "leaders" at the moment...

Not caring about points is a step towards the right direction; community playing is mostly a matter of attitude while playing.
In steam the major issue is winning with time. I have lost quite a few games where I was winning due to time restrictions. But it's like blitz chess. If people enjoy playing fast than OK.
Then, seeing what others had played; if there is no time constraint then one can click and see; it's not easy, but it's the same for all and closer to reality (one can't see past moves in board game!).
Mostly all constraints and issues are the same for both opponents. I personally found java more difficult to use and mad more mistakes there.
Going back to "attitude of playing" in java lately peolpe where playing multi in a very friendly manner; I have been ignored by at least 3 players because I dared to block. So why should I care about re-joining Java? In last tournament I ranked higher than players that are in top 20 currently... And I enjoyed much more losing by 0,5 point by Truckertreller than games I currently okay in steam (or losing 4-2 in USA 2er by a gentleman like Kasi or analyzing the last moves with Voj)
So the real issue is if there are still players willing to play in this aggressive tournament fashion that makes the game competitive. Even more if there are people willing to organize; I could help in calling good players from steam to join a tournament (nation's cup is not a good one to start calling new players).
There are many good players playing multi USA in steam... the first year in java was difficult too. And really filling wikipedia was such a hassle!! Why didn'e anyone care about these difficulties back then?
Even cheating was extensive in the first years! In steam it's easier to check on cheating. There is a nice option where only friends can observe!

Well, can not agree more with you, while I was meaning something different. I mean in general same players here on steam have lesser ranking because people play many different new maps, which are less-skill-more-luck-dependant;against very low-score opponents most time. When players like Hecki or Womble and many other are often 1500+ score here It's much easier to go down score-wise very quickly against them then playing vs 16-17+ score guys on java. Games are in general also faster, due to the fast timer, mistakes are more common. Few times when I starting playing on steam after java- always gone down in score like you say.
To finish with this offtop(which I obviously did start, sorry;) and not to start another"which platform is better discussion":
at this stage I think we have to make a principal agreement(or not make) to play the 2018 NC on the new platform only.
From my understanding there are only few multi players(not 2ers) which have some kind of issues with this and can't migrate.
There is a lot of time before the start for everyone who is interested to train, to get used to steam. From what I know most guys who play here for several months, can barely look at the java screen nowadays. Many have security-related issues on their PCs and can't even join on java at all.
If we'll have an agreement there will be some more stuff and rules to discuss and maybe even add something to the spectators and the show(I've got an Idea already).

Platforms aside, I am assuming more games will be played on STEAM for this Nation's Cup.
Which means it will be more difficult to watch matches, unless someone in a side Thread tells us how to do certain techniques in Steam that comes so easily in java. Three examples come to mind:
A. How do I find the games to watch?
B. Remind me again of the technique to use to see what colors and lokos the opponent has just played on the grey?
C. How do I find if a friend is on Steam playing in a match? (thus I can wait out the game or watch them) Is there some master list of people playing?
I will start a thread for help in making Steam "competitive-style" friendly.

A note on platforms:
Well it has now happened to me. When I try to do internet explorer to get onto java, it cause a problem to my computer with that old version. So look for me only in Steam now I guess.
And know I really prefer java, but this too must come to an end.

Hello all! I have not been around for quite some time, mainly because I do not like the new platform. However, if the answers to Dale’s questions are easy and fixable with the steam platform, I am willing to try it. However, I definitely prefer Java. But it sounds like people are having problems with Java. I would like to play because this event has always been tons of fun!

So almost 1 month later, where do we stand with Nation's Cup 2018?
As I see it, We have:
1 German team in.
1 Italian team
I have a USA Team. (well sort of, but we surely could use one more committed player.) I have 2 yes, and 3 "Put me in if you really need me, Coach" If you are a player from USA and are ready to play let me know.
I think there may be a French Team. (nicolas seemed to think they could)
And there may be a Russian team. (confused on that)
Is there another team? We would love to have a 6th team, maybe an International Team.
I am still looking at start date around October 1. SO LET'S MOVE THIS FORWARD!

Well, USA team is good with playing Steam.
Many still prefer JAVA, but I know I am not even sure if I can even get Java to run. All our players will play what is needed.
So for the others, looks like ITA team shows their team with preferences, but ANY who sign in must be at least prepared to play on Steam.
Not sure what France is thinking.
And no idea if GSV or someone who may be organizing an International team.

Should we define Steam games parameters?
Time ( 30 minutes?)
Table opener (alternate or Always the player with less points?)
And
I'm not sure if creating a game with invitation or creating a game with private mode and password is the same for observers.

these notes are important.
I assume 30 minutes per person is enough. (if we want this as a spectator sport, any slower is painful to watch.)
Whoever opens is not as important as being certain that it is alternating starts. All 6 games played are to be played.
I do not know steam well enough to know how to have observers. Do observers need a password?
If so we should make the password simple like NC (for Nation's Cup)

You can choose the first match random and then alternate.

With Java observers can see the cards of the player with more points (i made mistake in the previous msg "or Always the player with MORE points") .
In Steam (not sure 100%) the observers can see the cards of the opener . Maybe for someone is important so we should alternate.

be sure to mark game for Nation's Cup.
Make sure you have game set for all observers, not just friends.
