Learning to use Steam "competitive-style" friendly. Sun, 12 August 2018 21:38
Since more games will be played on STEAM for this Nation's Cup. some of need some help in learning how to do certain techniques in Steam that comes so easily in java. Three examples come to mind:

A. How do I find the games to watch?

B. Remind me again of the technique to use to see what colors and lokos the opponent has just played on the grey?

C. How do I find if a friend is on Steam playing in a match? (thus I can wait out the game or watch them) Is there some master list of people playing?

Ok, nice idea Onyx, the new thread.

Finding a NC game to observe can be much easier then it looks like. First of all one should learn how to use game filters properly in order to have a list of only the proper games. I mean USA only map, no bots only, ranked etc. Then we can add a rule to name all game in a certain way for observers to be able to find them faster. How exactly to be discussed, but the games should be opened with a PW(since 99% of all games here are opened without a password). The "private" game filter should be also on when player want to observe a champioship game.

hope you are serious, since it was discussed more then 2.5 years before already:
"You can see how many locos your opponent played. Just click on his name and on the track symbol then." __BTB Benny

p.s. Thats even showing not only what has been played on grey but shows a quick replay of the opponents turn(cards draws, which color if open, how much colors/locos were layd on any track)

Yes I was serious, since I do not play on Steam often enough, it can be easy to forget how to do that.
And as you say, it is 2.5 years ago.

adding to what stason stated: the easy filters to use are "private" (as long as tournament games all have password) & "no bot" (since games will not allow bot replacement). "USA" filter is hard to use as you need to click on ALL other maps to turn them off (this is practical only to players that do not play any other map

things have improved a little since this thread.

it's clear to see opponent move when they just draw: it stays under their icon for enough time. Same when they draw tix.

The issue arises when the opponent lays trains: it is almost impossible to see in real time what colors they lay, it's gone too fast. So only practical way is to click on their name during your own move . One might need to click two times; so usually it takes 3 clicks before you see the move (if you do it immediately after the opponent's move it only needs 1 or 2).

In multis it might be a hassle, because again the only practical way is to wait for all opponents to finish their moves and then take your time and check all of them one by one (else you miss other players' movements). This could be cumbersome in those turns when ALL opponents will have laid trains).

It used to be buggy before, to the point that often you couldn't see the opponent's move at all! It is stable now...

And let's be honest: in board games one can't see past moves either.

Steam offers greater flexibility here as it has separate chat room. I have never used it though so I don't know its capabilities.

Just put all tournament players as "friends" and you see them easily in the lobby.

Then if we use a specific way of naming tournament games it would be easy to locate open games to observe.

The best new option is that there is "observe by buddiess only" option, so no cheating possible. Only people in the "buddy" list of the creator will be able to join...

one advantage:
time set to 30 min should be more than enough to allow for possible internet loss and chatting without stress.
Adding "no bot replacement" option resolves the infamous Java problem of 2min: you may think 15 min without any issue. So we should set an upper limit (30 in 2ers and 20min in multis should be enough)

For those who wasn't very pleased with the steam interface and probably doesn't know this yet: one have an option to choose beetween two layouts.
The first one is basic and default. The second one, with the open chat and opponents stats to the left, which I prefer especially in a multi (look at the 3rd screenshot).

To be able to switch beetween those layouts you have to choose a "windowed dispay" at the settings, then play with the form and the size of the window. Very easy and usefull.

Am I the only one with problems to start ticked to ride on steam?

I installed steam, I downloaded ticket to ride, I entered the codes and now I have the program between the games installed with the link also on the desktop.

The problem is that clicking on it opens a window with the word "preparation to start ticked to ride" and then closes immediately.

I thought it was a problem of firewall, antivirus, defender but also disabling them, the problem is the same.

This PC is new, just assembled, with windows10 64bit.
To be sure, I also tried my girlfriend's PC which is not new and runs windows 7 32bit and another antivirus, but the problem is repeated in the same way.

The other matches of the NC I have played on java and if necessary I installed steam, but I did not think to find these problems ...

Am I doing something wrong?
do you need a desktop movie?

thanks to those who will try to solve my problem,

Andrea
