Ticket to Ride EUROPE EDITION Question

There are five people on the cover of the box, each one in different colored outfits that link them to the player tokens by color (red woman is red, green man is green, etc.) Are we supposed to infer that we are these people? Are these the train magnates alluded to in the rules? Or just passengers that happen to be the same color as the five player tokens??
If that IS the case, then who is the mysterious women on the back of the box? Is this the “black” token? Why isn’t she on the front? There’s another man who could potentially be the “black” player. Why would there be two?
I guess I’m just curious about the world outside of the game. I haven’t been able to find more information online.

Gee, a pretty deep question to ask.
I don't think there is any relation for whom the characters are. I suspect one of the founders of Days of Wonder or maybe Alan Moon would be the ones to perhaps answer that question.
