The other board games you play Mon, 28 December 2015 07:32
Gimme a top 5 (can be 10 if you have a few favorite games) of the games you really like to play on the board.

Any kind of games is welcome: easy/medium/high difficulty, for adults, families or even for kids, serious or party games...

Always curious for new suggestions!
Thanks!

We focus on games that work well for 2-players.
So, other than TTR and its various maps:

Tikal, Lost Cities (ok, it's a card game), Dominion (also card), Carcasonne. Have also enjoyed learning Cacao recently, but not sure how it will evolve.

1. Ticket to Ride
2. Settlers of Catan (Includes Catan Junior for the kids)
3. Five Crowns (Card Game)
4. Mystery Express
5. Phase 10 (Another Card Game)

Have played 7 Wonders and really enjoyed that. Overall I always look for input on new games to try as well.

I play so many different games its hard to say, but here are some of my favorites.

Medium Weight Games:
Castles of Burgundy (die burgen von burgund) [free on boiteajeux.net]
Saint Petersburg (2nd Edition came out recently)
Tzolk'in [free on boiteajeux.net] [free on boardgamearena.com]
Stone Age [free on boardgamearena.com] (better with expansion)
Race for the Galaxy [free on boardgamearena.com](better with first 2 expansions)
Castles of Mad King Ludwig (came out last year, expansion doesn't add much)

Heavier Games:
Agricola [free on boiteajeux.net]
Goa (2nd Edition came out recently)
Trajan [free on boiteajeux.net]
Power Grid
Through the Ages [free on boardgamearena.com] (new edition coming out soon)

Lighter Games:
Wits and Wagers - best trivia game I've played (3+ players)
Tichu - card game (4 player - partners)
7 Wonders:Duel (2 Players) (only played a few times, just came out)
Can't Stop [free on boardgamearena.com]
Lost Cities [free on boardgamearena.com]
Lost Cities the Boardgame (better than basic Lost Cities)

Some are free to play on http://www.brettspielwelt.de/ also, but I haven't had much luck with the interface. boiteajeux is turn based, and boardgamearena is live or turn based.

Most of the sites the rules are lacking for games, so the best bet is to download them from boardgamegeek.com and read them or watch a video there.

Games I don't like:
Five Tribes
Splendor (ok a few times, but not a lot of choices in terms of strategy)
Settlers of Catan (ok back in the day, but a lot better games now)

Games that are good but prefer to play other games:
Puerto Rico
7 Wonders
Dominion
Kingdom Builder

I have a few I really enjoy.

OF course TTR
Catan, I have all different variations and expansions
Puerto Rico
Agricola
Dominion
Acquire: They stopped making this I believe...
We still love Monopoly strangely enough
Tikal (WE have it, but don't play it much anymore)
Scotland yard (WE have it, but don't play it much anymore)

Several I haven't tried yet, but I want to... Finding the time is a different story!!

Party games
Apples to apples
Curses - You have to have the right group for this to be fun
Wits and Wagers
Balderdash
Cranium
The totally insane card game: (Takes work for everyone to learn, but really fun if everyone knows all of the crazy rules)

Another one we love is homemade, but you need a big group. Everyone gets small pieces of paper and writes 5-7 names (famous people, characters, friends, athletes, etc) and folds the paper in half. Then you divide up into 2 teams. Boys versus girls or other. Then you get 1 minute to try and explain as many names as possible without using sounds like or starts with this letter, and without using any part of the name to explain. You can't pass though, so if you get a name you don't know who it is, you have to try to explain it anyway. You go until you have gone through the entire bowl. Then you do it again, except this time you only get one word to try and explain the name. Then you can do it again, but you can only use actions with no words to explain the last time. It's a good game for big groups and can fill up an entire night and everyone is having fun.

1. Chess
2. Backgammon
3. Stratego
4. Bridge
5. Scrabble

Honorable mention: Spyfall

I don't consider some of these can be played on a board, but what the heck, they are my favorite games other than TTR.

Re:The other board games you play Thu, 31 December 2015 19:08
Thanks for the contributions!

I actually needed some ideas to help build a balanced game library. I'm closer in the spirit to Dandee (thanks for K2 suggestion!) and Pello (thanks for the Island) I guess, mixing family games and medium weight games. The French-Italian connection!

I liked Puerto Rico better than Agricola. Power Grid, Puerto Rico, Castles of Burgundy are probably my top ceiling for difficulty. I am not super excited with medieval/austere German games, even Catan.
I will try to dive again into them with Stone Age to overcome my allergy to crops/plantations/resources. I think Sven has been ready to play some serious games for quite some time Smile . If Drake wants to stop by one of these days, we could have a heavy gaming weekend, and he would explain all the rules for us. Nod

I needed some game ideas to play with kids, We play Camel up, Labyrinth, Scotland Yard, Ninja vs Ninja, Hey that's my fish, Jungle Speed, Spot it (Dobble), Can't stop, King of Tokyo.
Colt express has been on my radar for a month with Takenoko, Lost cities, Jaipur, Rise of Augustus and Machi Koro.

We also have a group of friends of 6/8 who we meet monthly with.
We like Bang, Cash n guns, Camel up, Bohnanza, Resistance, 7 wonders among others, because they can play 6+ players.
If you have good games that play well with 7/8, I'll take them !

After hearing what you are after, Here are some from my games library of over 100 games:
For family: Lemming Mafia. (cute adorable and fun)
Takenoko
Flip Out

For groups of 6+: Code Names
(Emperor: this is one that I do not have board game for, but is great with group of 10+)
Scattegories

If word games combined with choices and not waiting forever for a turn: Buy Word

Cooperative Games: Shadows Over Camelot
family cooperative: Hanabi

Too many strategy games to tell you about, and they depend on what you like. As my son says: you want chess type (exact moves you should do) or one with more randomness where luck with dice rolls factor in more?

Like I said, I really like any kind of games.
I've watched a bunch of rules during the holidays looking for new ideas.

To play with our oldest daughter, Lost Cities, Jaipur, Takenoko, 6 nimmt, Alhambra, The Island seem to be interesting in different styles. I just got Colt Express.
Since I love playing TTR, I really do not mind some randomness when playing.

As a step above those games, Stone Age seems to be ideal bridge between light and heavy games. So definitely my next purchase.

I dug into some heavy games rules. Rather than heavy planning, I think I like when you have to manage several things at the same time. I also like interactions, and interfering with the opponent. Troyes looks super interesting, so do Bruxelles and Russian Railroads.
More so than Domaine (Richard Coeur de lion/Löwenherz) that I played one time without any excitement or Castles of Burgundy, of which I just watched the rules (with no Burgundy in it Smile ). I played Puerto Rico one time, that was alright, but not to die for. Probably requires more games.
I played Agricola one time with my fellow Red teammates, this is not for me. Late night and drinks probably did not help hehe !

5. Ticket to Ride

Erratum
5. Ticket to Ride with locos
....
69. Ticket to Ride without locos Smile

We played Russian Railroads with our famous neighbors, that was pretty fun. First game lasted a long time, time to depunch, read the rules and understand what happens. Second was way more fluid and "faster" (90 minutes) with pretty interesting mechanics.

Next on the list: Power Grid, Puerto Rico, (on my list: Myrmes, Bruxelles, Troyes, Deus, Stone Age, Shakespeare, and 5 Tribes)

I played Colt Express with friends (casual gamers) and our daughter, that was pretty fun.

Re:The other board games you play Sat, 12 March 2016 18:43
2 months of playing other stuff.

Family fun:
Colt Express is like Camel up. It's fun around kids, it's cute. But fades after a few games

Party game
Codenames:
Word guessing game that plays with teams. Fast, fun, clever! Will buy it!

Family +
7 wonders duel: Different mechanics than original game. A good game for 2, that plays pretty fast. Next on my list of purchases.
Patchwork: played one game. Probably a great game for 2 that plays in 20 minutes. Just not exciting for me.

Medium games:
Stone Age: Good game to initiate players to worker placement and light gestion.
Lords of Xidit: You have to program your next 6 actions at every turn. Anticipation and opportunism makes the game pretty fun. Probably even more fun when you play with the same group of people. Need 3/5 players.
Castles of Burgundy: Pretty simple with good depth that make each game pretty satisfying. Plays great 2-player. Would strongly recommend.
Shakespeare: Build the best troupe the create the best masterpiece. A very nice game with top-notch illustrations. Ideal to discover gestion games. Plays well 2 to 4. Strongly recommend.
Orleans: Bagbuilding mechanics. Super fluid and fairly easy to handle after one turn. Really enjoyed it. Would play again.
Deus: A nice game, fairly easy to handle too. I just suck with handmanagement!
Concordia
A good game, with similar mechanics as Deus, but a bit more subtle. And I suck at it too!
The Voyages of Marco Polo: For some reasons I love dice management. The game is fun with different characters and ways to win. You want to do a lot but can do only a few actions.Probably needs a few more games to discover the balance behind it. Strongly recommended!
Lewis & Clark: I like the race aspect of the game adding to the deckbuilding/hand management part. Theme is great, and board is beautiful. Would play again
Keyflower: Bidding/worker placement mechanics is interesting. Too dull for me.
Puerto Rico: A good game, just not exciting.
Saint Petersburg: Good card drafting game. But also unexciting for me. Probably plays best after several games.

Heavier games:
Tzolkin: I like the mechanics with the gears. But it requires too much planification for me.
Trajan: Awale mechanics is also fun. Plays well 2 to 4. Alright to play online.
Mombasa: Pretty complicated to play, but after 1 game I wanted to play again. Like Marco Polo, you want to do way more than you want, but that's good frustration. An excellent game.
Myrmes: Nice them where you have to manage a colony of ants. But it's too punishing to my taste.
Bruxelles: Work placement/gestopm with a nifty bidding element. A very good game, but not super exciting.
Troyes: Dice management. This is my favorite game to play online right now with Castles of Burgundy. Love it

If some are interested to play online, drop me a pm.
I/we play Castles of Burgundy, Tzolkin, Deus, Concordia, Trajan, Lords of Xidit, Troyes, Stone Age.

Games I want to try:
Grand Austria Hotel (dice drafting, you manage a hotel and try to prepare rooms for more or less demanding customers).
Via Nebula
Lutece

Online: (boardgamearena, boiteajeux, yucata)
Seasons, Egizia, Assyria, Gingkopolis, Tournay, Glen More, Carson City, El Grande, Cacao, Russian Railroads, Jaipur, A few Acres of Snow!

It seems that I lik games that asks for anticipation, opportunism and requires you to deal with the randomness you have the deal with rather than heavy orogrammation/planification, where each mistake punishes you.

It's been really fun to play other games!

Tikal (Kramer)
Amerigo (Stefan Feld)
Agricola (Rosenberg)
Trajan (Stefan Feld)
Castles of Burgundy (Stefan Feld)
The Princes of Florence (Kramer)
Samurai (Knizia)
GIPF Project (Burm, Dvonn first)
Dominion (Vaccarino)
Diplomacy (Calhamer)

My favourite game designer still highly active is Stefan Feld, who find in each game a clever management of luck factor, and always find a rather good ratio between family/heavy games.
