A note of congratulations to Sam Edelston (sam1812) who has actively supported the play of: Memoir’44 Online, the Memoir’44 ladder tournament on Vassal and face to face tournament play at BPA. He is being honored particularly for his generous efforts in organizing, managing and overseeing Memoir’44 gameplay at the 2018 Boardgame Players Association annual tournament.
Thanks Sam for all you do to make it both FUN and Memorable!

Thank you, Sam, for all you do for this game and community! If it wasn't for playing you online several years ago, I don't know if I would have found out about and joined any tournaments.
I remember playing you and you said you were practicing for a tournament. You beat me and I was amazed that you were setting traps for me as I fell into them. Then in the rematch, I tried to set some traps and they worked! I won the rematch, got addicted to the strategy, joined your tournaments and have enjoyed them ever since. Thank you!

.
Thank you, all, for your beautiful accolades.
WBC is all about playing and participating for the love of the game. There are more than 100 tournaments, where we all compete and try to win first prize. "GM of the Year" is different. You don't compete for it -- instead, players nominate you, secretly, and the Board decides which recommendations convinced them. I am deeply honored and humbled, and totally surprised, to have been awarded it.
While it's an individual award, the Memoir activities at WBC are really the result of an outstanding, unswervingly loyal team.
Tank Commander has been my right hand and AGM all nine years (soon to be ten) that I've run the tournament. He has been a valued advisor in innumerable ways, and has run many of our Overlords.
LooneyLlama, my second AGM, is also a valued advisor, and we've included one of his Overlords each of the past several years.
We have a teaching session before the tournament, and last year we had extra teachers, because of Combat Cards. I elsewhere, setting up the tournament, during the teaching session, so I'm not certain, but I believe our teachers included the AGMs, gheintze, JJAZ, and maybe others. (JJAZ also generously brought some special maps from Europe, as prizes.)
I believe japarker helped me with tournament setup and sign-ins. I may be forgetting to mention one or more others.
And there are the numerous online players who have come to WBC to join us for the tournament, Overlords, and camaraderie. It's a joy to know you all.
And I absolutely must thank Richard Borg and Days of Wonder / Asmodee for their continued support of this amazing game, and for keeping it vibrant.
All of you deserve to be acknowledged as part of this award.
Memoir has brought me friends all around this country and around the world. By running tournaments, I feel I'm helping to bring people of the world a little closer together. As I like to say, "Play wargames, not war."
For those of you who would like to experience WBC firsthand, we'll be playing Memoir on Thursday 7/25 thru Saturday 7/27. I've created an event at https://www.daysofwonder.com/en/event/details/?id=1763
Or you can go straight to the WBC website for the Event Preview at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc19/previews/m44.html and the convention's home page at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbcindex.html .

In the spirit of giving a little something extra ... I like to play music in my spare time. Last November I was performing somewhere and realized that, since it was after midnight, the date would be 11/11/18.
So I did this song by Eric Bogle. It's about World War I, but it applies as well to World War II. "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda."

May the world someday learn.

Indeed. It takes a village. In this case, a global village. Thank you to my friends on the other side of the ocean!
JJAZ wrote on Sat, 08 June 2019 06:00 | For the prizes I was just a messenger
They where donated by the Dutch open Brigade and the other maps donated by the club in Melle Belgium
And Quit2 brought them even to my house
So a secret underground network of friends
Thanks again to all involved

Sam is an excellent ambassador for the game, and his commitment to the M'44 tournament at WBCs is incredible. He makes player aids, welcomes everyone, and keeps the tournament running smoothly year after year.
Nobody deserves this honor more than Sam, and I'm happy to be one of his helpers.
My only wish is that he would win the darn tournament...

I would like to add my congrats here too.
His dedication borders on the amazing. On at least two occasions I know of he worked full days before making the several hour trip down to Seven Springs and arrived after midnight.
He fires on all cylinders as a GM am I am proud to been part of a group who assisted him.
As to what Geoff said, I second that - it would be great if Sam finally got that golden ring and won the whole thing. Frankly how it has eluded him so long is beyond me as he is an world class player and a world class person.

The gentleman he is, he prefers to let others win the tournament he organises. He'll have to attend another tournament (in Europe?) to win one. Who'll sponsor his trip to Europe?
At the same time, it's research for the WBC.
