Operation Overlord - what do I need? Thu, 29 August 2019 10:39
Hi all!

I recently bought Memoir '44 and the Operation Overlord expansion. I had not done my research before buying and I thought that this would be enough to play the Overlord game, but it turns out that I need to get special maps. From the research I have done, it seems that it would also suffice to get another copy of the base game, but is this the best option?

Can someone please tell me what my options are to play Overlord. I have been researching a bit but all of the posts are now quite old. I would like to play using the miniatures rather than tokens. What maps can I get now and what else do I need to play?

Thanks a lot!!

Well that depends what scenarios that you wish to play. With just 2 base games there are 3 scenarios you can play. Omaha Beach, sword beach and Bastogne. All other requires more expansions. Two eastern front expansions let's you play 2 more Overlord scenarios for example. You don't have to get two of the army pack expansions though, as you can use the counters from the operation overlord expansion.

The battle maps are a great way to experience overlord since they are ready with terrain and you only have to put troops there. All overlord battle maps are out of print sadly, and prices go as far up as 500$ for one of these expansions since they will not be reprinted.

There are a couple of ways to significantly reduce the number of army figures needed.

1. The Overlord expansion includes punch-out sheets of cardboard infantry, armor, and artillery figures. I think those were included specifically so people wouldn't need to buy extra sets.

2. As they do in Axis & Allies, get some mini poker chips to use as substitute "figures." An infantry unit can be represented by one infantry figure standing atop three chips.

3. If you have figures from a similarly scaled game, you can use them.

Thanks Daniel for your reply. That is very useful information. I did not realise that all of the battle maps are out of print. That basically just leaves me with the option of getting a second set because I will not have a map big enough to play Overlord, right?

Thank you Sam.
I could use the tokens from the Operation Overlord expansion. I just don't have a map to play Overlord, so it seems I will have to get another base set or just forget it...

Buying a second base game makes more sense since you said yourself that you wish to play with army figures not counters. Also like I said before with two base games you can play 3 overlord scenarios and they are really fun and a good way to start. You are also right that you will need it because of the two maps.

Also look for trough jungle and desert battle map. It can be found in some stores still.

And if you are willing to proxy some pieces and even terrain you can go to the website and download a multitude of Overlords to play. Official or SFTF, hours of fun to be had. Smile

As of this moment,

The battles of Khalinkin-Gol are available at the above link. However, there is only one left.

Depending on how attached you are to aesthetics, if you own a Winter/Desert board, you can put that next to the standard board to play Overlord with only a single base game. That's what I did before I started running Overlords and buying doubles.
