Dday landings QUESTION-triple map setup-OVERLORD Sun, 08 September 2019 16:21
Gents,
I am hosting a memoir night and we are going to break out the dday maps for a triple map setup (Omaha, Utah, Airborne) in the Overlord format. I really want to attempt this setup, although the overlord format is typically played in a double map setup...

When looking at Richard Borg's comments here,

https://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?goto=300524#msg_300524

He mentions that it is possible to do the triple map format in overlord with a few tweaks...
"That is a total of 26 ways to play. Okay, one map combination we never did try, was to play a Triple Map Landings by Nation with 8 players using the Overlord Command cards and rules, but I am certain this would work and could be accomplished with some minor Overlord rule adjustments."

Can anyone comment on the minor overlord rule adjustments referred to by Richard, preferably from those who have attempted this setup? If you haven't played this setup, feel free to offer suggestions on how to make this particular setup workable using the Overlord deck. Thanks.

Offhand, these things would need to be adjusted or clarified:

The Commander-in-Chief (CinC) would still give out cards in the usual way, with Left cards to Omaha. Center cards to Utah, and Right cards to Airborne. But the Field General (FG) would play a single-section card in any one of his three sections. (As the DDL rulebook says, you'd use an Overlord deck.)

You'd have to get guidance from the Overthrough Cards table on page 9 of the rules and decide whether the Axis hand should be 9 or 10 cards.

For the multi-section cards, Recon-in-Force presumably would order one unit in each of the FG's 3 section ... General Advance would order 2 units in each of his 3 sections.

Pincer Move in Overlord can only be given to the Left or Right FG (never the Center FG), and orders 2 units in either his Left or Right section. I see two possibilities for that card. You might play it similar to the Overlord rule: Left or Right FG only, but 2 units in any one of his 3 sections. Personally, I think it might be more logical to play it similar to the Recon-in-Force: Give to any FG, and let him play it as a normal Pincer Move with 2 orders in each of his flanks. Decide what rule you want in advance.

Their Finest Hour in the Overlord deck says to roll 4 dice per FG for orders. This might be a controversial idea, but because the boards are bigger, I'd consider consider a house rule increasing that to 5 per FG.

Finally, I understand the desire to play the three American maps, while at the same time, the Airborne map has fewer unit types for the Allies, and might be less interesting. Consider the possibility of Gold-Omaha-Utah. (Gold is also a more balanced scenario than Airborne.) Obviously, your choice.

Have fun! This should be a blast!

That is exactly the kind of guidance I was looking for. Thankyou for taking the time to reply. You answered some of my concerns .... which was how to alter some of the cards for field generals who normally have two sectors to deal with, and now, in this format, will have 3 to manage. Thankyou also for the suggestion to replace the Airborne map for Gold.

Other than post game impressions from someone who has run this setup, nope. I really appreciate the thorough answer! Those changes to the cards made perfectly good sense. I am sticking with your suggestions and have already typed up the house rules with the amendations. Going to stick with the Airborne map for thematic purposes though. I liked the finest hour tweak and I tweaked the Dig-In card to allow artillery as well. I also chose to allow the Pincer Move card to be played by any field general. Thankyou again! I will post my impressions this weekend.

Just wanted to say thank for your suggestions. The night was a blast. We had a few players with minimal experience and had quite a few questions about reinforcements and other things unique to the D-Day landings expansion. We choose not to use the new flight plan, used house rules on the overlord deck to tweak the cards, one medal for beach control (instead of two) and one medal for big guns (instead of two). We also gave the Axis 10 cards instead of 9. After 5 hours or 37 medals, whichever came first, the Axis Axis won with 28 medals to 20 medals for the Allies. We had a great time! I appreciate all of the help this community offers. Once again, thank you for your suggestions!
