Solo Memoir '44: The AI Project (Automa) Sun, 26 November 2017 17:30
In a recent conversation about how people play Memoir '44 Solo, I had a thought about how to develop an AI Deck that would allow people to play against an 'opponent' instead of trying to just make the best decision for each side.

My thoughts are based on the AI cards used for Scythe. Here are those rules for anyone interested:

https://app.box.com/s/rj3jrw0rab2uiz02up89kbant5g8ew1p/folde r/4995749493

As I start thinking about how to make it work, I am creating a prototype that will be a rough first-try. If anyone is willing and interested in testing the prototype out, please send me a PM with your normal e-mail so I can send you the files when they are ready.

Thanks!

Re:Solo Memoir '44: The AI Project Mon, 27 November 2017 19:49
Good morning, everyone.

As I start to think about creating an Automa system for Memoir '44, I find myself trying to determine what the key elements of the game are. What makes this game so much fun, especially when playing against another person? This will help me create an Automa that captures the same feeling, even if it has to get there a different way.

Here are my thoughts so far, in no particular order:

~ The unknown of what cards your opponent has.
~ Managing to outmaneuver/out think your opponent.
~ Getting the right cards and rolls to dominate a flank
~ Responding to the attacks of your opponent with your own counter-punch

Please take a moment to share what your favorite element is, no matter what that element might be.

Thanks!

Having the courage to press on with your own offensive when that seems your best chance of victory and not get sidetracked reacting to your opponents offensive elsewhere on the board.

With the example 'Charge' card is AIJ ordering 1 Arm, 3 Inf and 1 Art?

If more units than allowed to be ordered meet the criteria to be ordered, I assume you would select the unit(s) randomly?

The document I sent you is only a first look at the idea without details figured out. Wait until I get something more solid before we get too far into the grass. Smile

it would be interesting to try to include tactics from Praxeo's book to make AI a worthy opponent

if you have a lot of cards (3-4) in one section you may start an attack there
if you have cards in all sections as well as 1-1-1 you may give the initiative to your opponent
keep the grey cards (DHQ, BEL) for later
be able to play defensively (current AIs play offensively, but this is not the strategy followed by most experienced players)
play cards in the section you don't want, so that you hoard up cards in the setion where you want to launch attacks (of course there are scenaria where there's not time for tactic moves)

I have sent you a pm

PM received. Although many aspects from Praxeo's book will be useful in this work, anything about hand management won't apply because the AI will be using a separate deck.

I'm making slow progress on the Automa. Today I managed to fit three battles in against Johnny and took a bunch of notes!

Here are some pictures of my first game against him:

I'll update everyone as I have more progress!

Playtesters, I'll get you material once I have something that seems to be working all right. Thanks again for being willing to help and for your patience. This might take a little while, since we're expecting our third in two weeks!! Very Happy

Stay tuned.

I have come up with my own way of playing solitaire. One way is to use a scenario and instead of using the objectives in the game, I use those from this sheet after I roll a die and compare to the chart. I also place markers on the board where enemy units would go and when I am three hexes from the marker, roll for the enemy unit that goes there.

Did anything ever come of this Solitaire AI Deck idea?
Sounded very interesting.

I haven't played Memoir44 in years but if a good Solo (not too convoluted) system was available I'd definitely give it a go.

I'm almost surprised that an official solitaire system hasn't been developed yet?

Has any progress been made with this system?

Life has gotten in the way (kids and jobs have a tendency of doing that) but the idea is still bumping around in the back of my mind. Thanks for the interest, maybe I'll carve out some time to work on it again.

Re:Solo Memoir '44: The AI Project (Automa) Wed, 04 December 2019 12:45
I still feel the easiest solo rules are:

Play your hand normally.

As for the AI, for each of their turns, draw 2 cards & play 1 card to the best of your ability & discard the other.

If the AI plays a Recon 1, they draw 2 after their turn. Put 1 in your AI hand for the next turn face down. Then, draw 2 on the AI's next turn as usually, play 1 and discard the other 2.

If the AI draws Ambush, you can just discard it and draw another card OR set it aside, face-up & play it at the most advantageous time for the AI. You would not draw a card for the AI after playing Ambush.

For a 10 round game, the AI will have seen 20 cards. If the human player draws 5 cards at game start, the human player will have seen 15 cards. Advantage AI on the number of cards. But, advantage to the human player having more flexibility.

It works out very even. I've even added 1 Campaign Book wrinkle:

When you force the other player to play with less cards for a turn or 2, the AI would only draw 1 card for the first turn or two instead of the usual 2 or you could simply ignore that aspect of the CB.
