Overlord on Vassal, this Saturday, 28 March Thu, 26 March 2020 01:05
Hi, folks --

It's been way, way too long since I led an Overlord on Vassal. But since many of us are stuck at home now, this seems like a good time for it.

High Stakes at Bruyeres, from Equipment Pack.

Saturday, 28 March:

> 10am Eastern time (New York)
> 3pm France, Belgium, Netherlands, etc.
> The rest of you can figure it out from there.

(USA is on Daylight Savings Time now. Europe will start it on Sunday.)

Please log in 10 minutes early to make sure your connection is working. We'll use version 10.13.1 of the Memoir module. The current version of Vassal is 3.2.17.

Sign up here, and let me know if you would be willing to be a Commander-in-Chief.

1. sam1812
2. mrmanley31*
3. Jeronimon
4. Almilcar
5. Zalamence
6. Gonzalan (Likely)
7. gonzoj (Likely)
8. Cpl_Uhl
9. JAParker
10. Photios (Possible)
(Until we have 8 definite, plus maybe a spare, I'm taking additional names.)

I am in also, but I wil have to check with the missus.

She is not yet up and I wil not poke the bear by waking her up. Smile
So I will keep you update on that.

I'm in. Any plans on how to tackle the sync issues? With two players, it usually messes things up in first turns, but then somehow disappears. With lots of people I could imagine the confusion is amplified.

Maybe we could use Skype or something?

Also, I can play Commander-in-Chief.

Thanks for asking, Zalamence. Here's my recommendation.

We should have one "master" copy of the board (me), and when needed, people will sync to the master copy.

At the end of the Movement phase, every FG should state how many units they moved. If anybody doesn't see that, they should say so.

After retreating, say that you have retreated. Again, if anybody doesn't see that, they should say so.

If you leave the board and miss some action, sync before your next turn or your next time being attacked.

If anybody can improve upon this, I welcome their suggestions.

Sam...

I will try and be there...don't foresee anything much happening with the way things are for now and unlike "J", I don't need no stinking permission!!! But, I will ask anyway to be on the safe side....

HI all,
I will drop by for sure to see you; if you need a substitute at some point I would be happy to step in. I don't know if I can commit for the 3-4 hours OLs last.
Cheers,
Photios

Zalamence commanded the Germans.
R - Almilcar ... C - Cpl_Uhl, relieved by Zalamence near the end ... L - gonzoj

mrmanley31 commanded the Allies
L - Gonzalan ... C - sam1812 ... R - Jeronimon

On the Allied 3rd turn, Gonzalan's Armor Assault finished off one of the German artilleries on the left, and Jeronimon shot the exposed sniper on the right. Almilcar retaliated by eliminating an infantry and a tank from Gonzalan. After the 3rd German turn, Axis led 3-2, and mrmanley31 had little to protect me from a growing armored threat in the center.

However, on our next turn, we scored 3 medals, including me triple-hitting a Panzer on the left and finishing off another tank in the center. Allied 5th turn was a TFH, with Gonzalan killing two infantries on the far left and Jeronimon killing one on the right. It likely would have been two additional medals for us, except that gonzoj's halftrack played Not a Step Back, to avoid being flagged off the board, which also protected a 2-figure infantry from the potential overrun. Suddenly, we led 8-4 kills after 5 turns. That halftrack's last figure would resist several more attacks before Jeronimon finally found its Achilles heel four turns later.

A German Barrage whiffed against Gonzalan's 1-figure tank. Gonzalan responded by killing Almilcar's last infantry, stripping the German Right down to just an artillery and a sniper. On a German Finest Hour, Cpl_Uhl's Tank Destroyer fired sideways to kill a 2-figure tank on the left, he also eliminated an infantry in the middle. Gonzoj also notched an infantry kill on the right side of the board. The Allied lead was cut to 9-7 kills. Somewhere around this time, the Allies transiently held a majority of the town hexes, though not at Turn Start, and a flag and some German moves gave the advantage back to the Axis.

The two TFHs and a Recon had given me some great defensive Combat cards. When Zalamence took over for Cpl_Uhl on the 8th turn, my 1-fig engineer Pulled Back against a Panzer -- which I killed on my next turn. Next turn, they went after my infantry in a town, but I Ambuscaded. Then, their artillery tried to kill a 1-fig engineer, but I made it Out of Ammo. My engineer then triple-hit an infantry in a town for the final kill. If not for my Combat cards, the Germans easily could have stolen the victory.

10 turns, 12-10 medals, 54-43 figures. Nearly 5 hours from start to finish, but a tough battle.

Lots of action on the left early, on the right later in the battle, and in the center throughout.

I think we'll do another one next month.
