The Winter War - a new campaign for you all! Fri, 28 August 2020 11:48
Hi everyone.

After a prolonged time away from teaching because of Covid, I am back to work imminently. It has, however, meant I've been able to produce one last campaign before I get too busy again!

Below you'll find the link to my campaign of the Russo-Finnish war of 1939-40.

It's seven scenarios, including two Breakthrough scenarios. There are victory events, score sheets with objective tracks, 'What If' events and hopefully a lot of interesting history too. Also included are special rules for Soviet KV-2 heavy tanks and rules for Molotov cocktails (from the Khalkin-Gol battle map).

The Winter War - The Russo-Finnish War 1939-40 - A Campaign by SamW44

A little background taken from the back of the booklet:

When Russia invaded Finland on Novermber 30th 1939, Stalin’s generals suggested it would all be over in a matter of weeks. How could such a small, under armed country possibly hold back the might of the Red Army? The Finns, however would fight on into March 1940.

This campaign will take you through just some of the key events of the war. Some scenarios will recreate the bitter defense of the Mannerheim line and constant counter attacks from the Finnish troops better adapted to the harsh winter. Others will recreate mottis with the Soviet forces trying to hold fast or breakout of the encirclement. The final part of the campaign gives the Soviet player the chance to plough into and breakthrough the Mannerheim line with even greater force, signalling the inevitable end of the war.

Certain images and legends define the story of the Winter War: deadly Finnish snipers; ski troops conducting daring raids and ambushes; the terrifying scale of the Russian forces that pitted huge numbers of tanks, including the monstrous KV-2s, against an army that had none; and Finnish troops hunting such tanks armed only with Molotov cocktails.

Hopefully these scenarios will touch on the feeling of these elements.Fighting as the Finns in this campaign will certainly demand clever tactics and true ‘sisu’ (grit!), while playing as the Soviet forces will show the deadly cost so many men paid under poor leadership despite such impressive firepower.

Finally, should anyone want a properly printed and trimmed copy that matches your other Memoir 44 scenario booklets, send me a message - I have a bunch printed out to share.

Hope you enjoy!

Thank you for the really nice campaign for my favourite game! I've been playing the Suomussalmi scenario from the Eastern Front expansion many times and the Finns vs. Soviets is a great setting. I think the scenario itself is quite good also. Because both sides have defending and attacking forces at play, it creates a nice dynamic. Its going to be interesting to see what kind of scenarios you have designed.

In the campaign booklet I've written that I felt I had to include Suomussalmi as a scenario but I love RBorg's version of it so much, I doubt I could do a better job - so his one is part of the campaign.

Hopefully you've find some of mine as fun. I think the breakthrough 'Hagglund's Mottis' has the heavy asymmetry and unconventional set up you might enjoy, as does the first one, 'Tolvajarvi'.

It will be interesting to compare your take on the different scenarios to those of the Dutch Open 2016 (search in SFTF for [DO2016] or start your search her: http://m44brigade.nl/dutch-open-2016-2/). We played a different Molotow rule because it predates the official Molotow rule.

And I recall a French Open scenario about Tolvajarvi as well.

Eagerly awaiting the arrival of the postman.

So much to play, so little time to play it in. Smile

Yes, I look forward to trying those too - I tried not to look at them too much in case I ended up copying or doubting my own versions too much!

I like the deeply frozen river rule though, that's a good idea.

No problem - they have been three very fun projects for me.

I'll be a bit busier again now so I don't know when the next one will happen - perhaps a bit of a bigger gap till the next is done.

Thinking about Sicily...

Winter War is quite fascinating and I always enjoy seeing Finnish battles in M44.

To understand what is going on, you have to know what had happened in Europe earlier that year. Invasion of Poland started the war between Germany and the Western Allies, but nothing much happened.

Eastern Europe looked like it would soon fall under Soviet Union, and when Finland was attacked, people expected that the war would be quickly over, just like in Poland.

But somehow the numerically superior and heavily-equipped force failed to break through. As the war continued (and no bigger events would distract the attention of major military powers), Stalin knew the risk of things escalating into a conflict between Soviet Union and the West.

Some historians, I recall, speculate that Norway, Sweden and Finland could have turned into massive battlefield if Winter War continued and UK (with others) sent forces to Scandinavia. These forces would be sent to aid Finland, but also to prevent trading raw materials to Germany.

From my understanding, with war already declared with Germany most sympathetic nations were reluctant to really help out in any real significant way.

There were plans to send in an expeditionary force from Britain, but they had no real plan as to how they would do this. Even if Sweden had allowed it, I can't really see how they would have been enough to really defeat Russia, it would have either meant massive escalation on both sides, which Britain would not have gone for, or more likely, just a defeat similar to the BEF in France in 1940.
