Night attack rules for artillery Fri, 31 July 2020 10:27
I was wondering if artillery can be used like infantry/armour with night attack rules,or if it uses the same rules for barrage where it can't be used until full daylight.

Artillery follows the same rules as infantry and armor for night rules. You can use them before it's fully light, but you are limited by the visibly marker.

Hello Mr. Manley,

I'm sorry to say this but I think you are a bit mistaken:
When playing with the night attack rules, you CAN NOT use your artillery before full daylight.

Greetings,
Erik.

Well Erik, I hate to disagree with you, but Mrmanley has it right: You can shoot the arty but it is limited to the visibility that is current (you cannot use Air Power or Barrage until it is full daylight).

Erik,
I am sorry you are the one who is incorrect. If you look at p.8 of the PACIFIC THEATER RULES:
Quote:

NIGHT ATTACKS
In some cases (indicated in the scenario's briefing notes), combat occurs at night under low-visibility conditions.
Set the Night Visibility Chart next to the board. Position a single Battle Star token on the chart's initial spot, marked 1. Visibility on the board is limited to 1 hex. For the time being, all combat is limited to Close Assault on enemy units in adjacent hexes. At the start of each of his turns, the US player rolls 4 dice. For each Star rolled, move the Battle Star token 1 spot upward on the Night Visibility chart. Visibility and firing range improve to the corresponding number of hexes, as indicated on the chart. All units, including Artillery, are subject to this limitation on their firing range.

When the Battle Star token reaches full daylight (firing range is now at 6 hexes), set aside the chart and Battle Star token. Normal combat visibility conditions resume, with normal firing ranges in effect.
Until full daylight is reached, the Air Power and Barrage tactic cards may only be played to order 1 unit of the player's choice.

Although you may not play BARRAGE or AIRPOWER cards for full usefulness until there is full daylight, the Artillery may still fire and is only limited to the range of the Night Attack. If you play Memoir '44 Online you will experience this dilemma in the scenario "[GUAM] - Japanese Counterattack"

Yes, sorry to tag team you with Jeronimon. Must have replied about the same time. You are certainly welcome, we all need refreshing on the rules from time to time so no worries!

My personal rule is that if any of your units can see the enemy, then your artillery can fire at them (within range), after all, the artillery is almost always firing at targets they cannot see as long as they have an observer to give them coordinates.

An interesting take, I can see where you are coming from.
In M44 the cards and choosing units represent the fog of war and what units you can get orders through to. I would argue that in your house-rule all units have working communication lines open with the artillery. For my M44 take on your rule maybe I would tweak it a little (or a lot actually Smile ) and say that only an ordered unit could ask for artillery support. We know the order has reached them so they must be able to get back tot HQ or the artillery. Smile

I have seen Eric's artillerie and it has goggles.
So maybe a house rule then?
