New Player Moving from Solo Play to Online

I'm been playing the solo game against the bots for about a month now and I'm ready to try an online game against real opponents. Anybody have any advice on strategy differences?
I assume blocking other players is the biggest difference; the bots don't seem to do that. Hiding my routes to avoid giving info to other players?
What's the best map to start with? How about number of players? I usually play solo 4 player.
Any particular etiquette I should be aware of?
