My answer is a simple no. No, they are not worth it. Some might like them, but the only time we tried them, they broke the game. Okay, that was partly because one of us made one bad decision. That, however, immediately decided the game and the rest was only a struggle to finish the game as soon as possible, as it was no longer fun. (Like losing your queen early in a chess game. In chess, however, you are allowed to just give up ...)
One of the nice parts of a basic Ticket to Ride game, is that one instance of bad luck or bad tactics doesn't make you lose the game. Here, that could happen.
Is one play only "anectodal evidence"? Of course it is, so what is said above, is just one person's conclusion.

Good to know.
I read the 1812 rules and concluded it added an interesting and clever mechanic, but perhaps an unbalanced over complication.
(A bit like placing the coloured tracks on the France Map expansion as far as I am concerned. )
I have pre-ordered the 15th anniversary Europe box and look forwards to it as the similar 10th Anniversary US is a delight with the larger board, slightly larger trains and the twee aesthetics only enhancing the game
I do think the colours of the Europe 15th anniversary are less vivacious or fun as they should have been.
Fuscia pink I like!
Brown and grey? A bit boring!
