Phase 2 of the tournament is eliminations.

Quarter-final matches are

Tank Commander vs lucky91
CAMiller vs Red-eyed Jack

The winner for the semi-final is the player with the most points; if there is a tie, the most medals then the most figures, then the first named.

The first named player will choose the first side for the first scenario. The second player will choose for the second scenario.

The scenarios for Playoffs are :

1) a scenario created by jdrommel: [Russia] The hell of Malgobek (Champions 2020)

This scenario has been adapted for online.

2) a scenario created by LooneyLlama: Battle of Milne Bay

https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/editor/view/?id=115 96

The scenarios are online. Inform us if you find bugs

Bonsoir,

Résultats du Match Donut99 - Caty (Battle of Milne Bay)

https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=9 3829411#replay:turn=1

Retour : Donut99 ( Alliés ) 5 ( 24 ) / Caty ( Alliés ) 10 ( 29 )
https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=9 3830608#replay:turn=1

Total Donut99 vs Caty 0-4 points 12-20 médailles 57-66 fig.

Grand Total sur les deux matchs :

Donut99 vs Caty 4-4 points 24-22 médailles 109-89 figs

Match Tank Commander vs lucky91

Scenario 1: The Hell of Malgobek

Tank Commander (Allied) vs lucky91 (Axe) 4-6 medals 23-27 fig
https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=9 3796877

Tank commander (Axe) vs lucky91 (Allied) 6-4 medals 23-21 fig
https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=9 3832119

result: Tank commander vs lucky91 2-2 pts 10-10 med 46-48 fig

a very tactical first scenario where the camp said weak won each time .
I save in extremis the draw on a last dice .....

Scenario 2: Battle of Milne Bay

Tank commander (Axe) vs lucky91 (Allied) 7-10 medals 32-36 fig
https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=9 3834323

tank commander (Allied) vs lucky91 (Axe) 5-10 medals 27-38 fig
https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=9 3835345

a "brutal" scenario where I resist Japanese offensives, especially since John lacks cards on his right flank...

I logically win 10 to 7 with this strong camp.

On the second game,, with an infantry assault and the finest hour to get started, I quickly lead 3-1. Luck continues to be on my side (cards and dice) and John can't do much. I ended up with BHL to win the return 10 medals to 5.

Result: Tank commander vs lucky91 0-4 pts 12-20 medals 54-74 fig

Final result: Tank commander vs lucky91 2-6 pts 22-30 medals 100-122 fig
Thanks to John for this exciting evening and for his fair play, given the frustration he may have felt during the last game.

Hello all.

Well, I faced a dangerous opponent, but then who in that final group was not?

Match one was an epic with only 2 figs advantage being the difference.

Match 2 game 1 -- I did not feel too bad about that loss as the Japanese usually lose that scenario. I had two good cards to open, but the Brits had the cards to meet and counter my offensive. My right never got going, and that spells trouble for the Japanese.

Game 2 was indeed trouble from the start and once the Japanese had 6 medals, I knew that is was all but over. I did not fret too much over this one sided game as all one can do is play the cards you are dealt and try your best.

Very well played by Luc.

It was a great pleasure to once again play in the Champions with such esteemed players.

I may qualify for the next Champions soon as I am in the BGG Finals, so here is hoping.

Until then my friends, good luck to all going forward.

Red-Eyed Jack vs CAMiller

[Russia] The hell of Malgobek

Game 1:
Red-Eyed Jack (Allies) 1 medals, 7 fig vs CAMiller (Axis) 6 medals, 21 fig
Game 2:
Red-Eyed Jack (Axis) 6 medals, 20 fig vs CAMiller (Allies) 2 medals, 11 fig

Match Result Red-Eyed Jack vs CAMiller 1-1 games 1-3 points 7-8 medals 27-32 fig

Game 1: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3987271
Game 2: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3989029

First battle went bad for me, as I had no cards, but in the second battle, I was able to hold Christopher to just winning the match by one medal.

Battle of Milne Bay

Game 1:
Red-Eyed Jack (Allies) 10 medals, 39 fig vs CAMiller (Axis) 6 medals, 34 fig
Game 2:
Red-Eyed Jack (Axis) 10 medals, 32 fig vs CAMiller (Allies) 6 medals, 34 fig

Match Result Red-Eyed Jack vs CAMiller 2-0 games 4-0 points 20-12 medals 71-68 fig

Game 1: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3990368
Game 2: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3992853

In both battles in the second match, my cards were overall better, and I was able to just steadily defeat Christopher's forces to win.

Thanks again for the games, Christopher.

Frostberg vs VCX1302

[Russia] The hell of Malgobek

Game 1:
Frostberg (Allies) 6 medals, 27 fig vs VCX1302 (Axis) 5 medals, 26 fig
Game 2:
Frostberg (Axis) 6 medals, 22 fig vs VCX1302(Allies) 3 medals, 22 fig

Match Result Frostberg vs VCX1302 2-0 games 12-8 medals 49-52 fig

Game 1: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3988644
Game 2: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3990915

First battle was going Frostbergs way and I was glad to turn Frostbergs 5-3 lead into a 5-5 endgame, which ended in Frostbergs favor. A well deserved victory.

In the second battle, Frostbergs ability to use the "russian Commissar" became very obvious as I failed to reach the same level he was playing at ... A 6-3 defeat for me was the result ...

Battle of Milne Bay

Game 3:
Frostberg (Allies) 6 medals, 36 fig vs VCX1302(Axis) 10 medals, 42 fig
Game 4:
Frostberg (Axis) 8 medals, 39 fig vs VCX1302(Allies) 10 medals, 42 fig

Match Result Frostberg vs VCX1302 0-2 games 14-20 medals 75-84 fig

Game 3: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3993355
Game 4: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 3995288

Game 3: After the first two games, Frostberg was leading with 4 medals, so I gave myself little chance to go through to the next round. But, as often before, once again it became clear that it ain't over till the fat lady sings! And how she sang! She made sure I could grasp a 10-6 victory just before Frostberg would get his final medals. This way, the third game became the "great equalizer" ... setting the scores at 18-18 medals

Game 4: At the beginning of this game we both knew that "the winner takes it all". This raised the stress and adrenaline levels a bit Wink Frostberg sent in waves of Japanese troops onto the shores. But my tough defenders proved to be hard rocks that shatter the oncoming Japanese waves. But the battle was far from over ... Frostberg tried to break through my left flank, but didn't succeed completely, leaving me troops to retaliate.

The battle shifted from flank to flank and slowly we crept towards 7-9 medals. Lucky for me, I could counterattack Frostbergs "General advance" and had the dice necessary to grab the last medals necessay for a 10-8 victory (retaking the both-sides-medals hex)

So ... 3 hours of fun, enjoying some great scenario's against a formidable opponent! Too bad only one of us can go through.
Thanks again for the great games!

Total score : Frostberg vs VCX1302 2-2 games 26-28 medals 124-136 figs

https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=9 4695237#replay:turn=1

‎Congratulations for your great victory, Donut (after 3 hours 45 minutes of play!). ‎

‎ Exciting and tense games that ended with a cat-and-mouse game on Milne Bay (45 laps for a Pacific scenario, it's not ‎common).
Unfortunatly, I was the mouse. Very Happy

Good luck for the final!

‎ As for me, I'm aiming for 3rd ‎place!‎

It seems like the third place is going to one of the "Gaulois" ...

I'm looking forward to facing Lucky91 once again on the fields of glory.

And congratulations to both Donut and Red Eyed Jack for making it to the finals. I'm sure those battles will be very interesting! To bad we'll only be able to enjoy these games after they're finished.

Anyway, good luck to Donut and Red Eyed Jack. And a bit of luck to Lucky as well Very Happy

Thanks to everybody involved in organising this fantastic championship! Not matter where I'll end up, I had the chance to participate and enjoyed every single battle, especially those won (and lost) at a single medal (or figurine) difference Twisted Evil

I hope I'll be able to qualify again for the next edition Twisted Evil

Red-Eyed Jack vs VCX1302

[Russia] The hell of Malgobek

Game 1:
Red-Eyed Jack (Allies) 6 medals, 28 fig vs VCX1302 (Axis) 5 medals, 22 fig
Game 2:
Red-Eyed Jack (Axis) 3 medals, 13 fig vs VCX1302 (Allies) 6 medals, 27 fig

Match Result Red-Eyed Jack vs VCX1302 1-1 games 1-3 points 9-11 medals 41-49 fig

Game 1: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 4806976
Game 2: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 4808229

First battle, each of us demolished the other on opposite flanks. Though once the fight cam into the center, I was able to pull out the win.
Second one, I began with good cards, but Frederik was just able to weaken me and then destroy units, faster then I could.

Battle of Milne Bay

Game 1:
Red-Eyed Jack (Allies) 10 medals, 39 fig vs VCX1302 (Axis) 6 medals, 31 fig
Game 2:
Red-Eyed Jack (Axis) 9 medals, 38 fig vs VCX1302 (Allies) 10 medals, 42 fig

Match Result Red-Eyed Jack vs VCX1302 2-0 games 4-0 points 20-12 medals 71-68 fig

Game 1: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 4809474
Game 2: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 4810374

In the first one here, Frederik pulled out some strong cards early to grab the lead, but then the tide turned, and I pulled out the win.

Going into this last battle, I had only 2 medal lead over Frederik, so it meant that I needed grab 9 medals to clinch the match, without it going to figures. I began right off with an all out attack on my right, and then once that petered out, I switched to the other flank to grab a few medals, while Frederik is just trying to catch up, and in the end, I was able to grab my 9th medal with one of my infantry and Barrage.

In the end, it was 4 very close battles. Thanks again for the games, Frederik, and best of luck in the 3rd place match.

Now it's on to the finals against Donut99.

Will Donut99 get his 2nd title or will Red-eyed one up his brother Minuteman by winning this fine event before him?

Stay tuned -- I am sure this will be an epic event.

Wow - Huge congratulations to Donut99, the first 2-time winner of the Champions Trophy! (He also won in 2016.)

Having competed in this tournament myself (in previous years) I can tell you that winning it even once is a big achievement. Winning it twice is extremely difficult.

The battle of Third Place
Gaulois contre Gaulois

Lucky91 vs VCX1302

[Russia] The hell of Malgobek

Game 1:
Lucky91 (Allies) 6 medals, 25 fig vs VCX1302 (Axis) 4 medals, 17 fig
Game 2:
Lucky91 (Axis) 3 medals, 19 fig vs VCX1302 (Allies) 6 medals, 32 fig

Match Result Lucky91 vs VCX1302 1-1 games 1-3 points 9-10 medals 44-49 fig

First battle, Luc starts by putting his artilley in the forest on the edge of the center and left flank. This one card (and move) is a great leap towards victory. This and the fact I rolled only 8% on armour secured Luc's victory.

Second one, I began with good cards ... a 7/8 air strike severely weakened Luc's armour. But he had "medics" in hands ... Lucky for me I had "barrage" as well, securing a quick medal. I even started to attack Luc's weakened left flank, gaining more medals along the way. And I was very lucky to get "Air power" a second time. That was the only way I could target Luc's units on the baseline, scoring five hits and the final medal.

Game 1: https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 5144367
Game 2 : https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=9 5145383

Battle of Milne Bay

Game 1:
Lucky91 (Allies) 10 medals, 39 fig vs VCX1302 (Axis) 5 medals, 31 fig
Game 2:
Lucky91 (Axis) 6 medals, 38 fig vs VCX1302 (Allies) 10 medals, 42 fig

Match Result Lucky91 vs VCX1302 1-1 games 3-1 points 16-15 medals 64-67 fig

Third game : My japs do a general assault and rush forward across the beaches, scoring several hits. Luc counterattacks, making this battle one of the bloodiest first turns ever. And ... I can counter attacks Luc's counterattack, trying to push through. But I fail to destroy the units, giving Luc multiple "battle backs" thanks to his stiff upper lip ... Scoring hits and even medals this way. As soon as Luc is able to move his armour onto the right flank beach, I know it's game over. I desparately try to score some medals ... but fail more than I succeed and Luc is able to pull some 1-fig units from the battlefield. But his victory was never in danger ...

Fourth and final game : Looking at my starting hand of cards, I decide to take a gamble. I use "Behind enemy lines" to send the farmost units on my left flank to the shoreline, scoring 4 hits and moving into some "safe" hexes in the center. Why? Because I'm holding an infantry assault and "All in the center". in the next turn I rush my infantry en masse to the shoreline, scoring hits and preventing Luc access to the beach. Some turns later, the center is all mine (except for the artillery) but I make a big mistake, allowing Luc to get some units near and in the center from his right flank. Since I don't have a lot of possibilities on my left flank, I push my units on the right forward, trying to get my last two medals before Luc has enough medals to win this grand duel. In the end, I actually had to use far more dice than anticipated to secure my final medal. This meant I scored less figurines than I had hoped for...

Who had won third place? After the fourth and final game Luc and I were both at 25 medals. And I feared Luc had scored more figurines ... It took some time to realize I had scored 8 hits more!

Sorry Luc, I'm very pleased to score third place (after Donut and Red Eyed Jack) but I'm sad as well. These tense battles could have gone either way. It's just down to a little but of more luck on my behalf. But hey ... I'm very proud to be a member of the "Gaulois"!

Merci Luc pour les jeux fantastiques! Et pour la camaraderie!

After the final battle, we realized our brother in arms Big Taz had won his final match for the TCOL. This means our team "Les Gaulois" win this season of TCOL. And at the very moment Luc and I were playing, MrManley and Lord of Dude were playing their final TCOL match. If Lord of Dude was able to score 13 out of a possible 18 points, he would jump over me to the first place ... And he did ... Too bad for me, MrManley didn't succeed to limit Lord of Dudes points to 13 (or less) ... Even though I was cheering really hard for him Wink

Congrats to Lord of Dude for his (too) big jump to the first place in the personal ranking of the TCOL!

Congratulations to the top 4 finishers:

1. Donut99
2. Red-Eyed Jack
3. Vercingetorix1302
4. lucky91

And, truly, congratulations to all 16 contestants who qualified for this tournament. There are no weak players here. Everybody deserved their spot at this table.

Special thanks, also, to lucky91 for being such an excellent partner in running this tournament, and for tracking the results throughout.

I will let Luc announce the prizes.

But there is one special prize that I am happy to announce. For a couple of years, we debated whether the Champion should automatically qualify for a place in the next year's Champions Trophy. After last year's tournament, we agreed that the field is so strong, the Champion deserves a chance to defend his title. So, Donut99 will be offered a place in the 2021 Champions Trophy.

Thank you everyone for the support and appreciation ! Smile

Having started M44 in 2014 at the age of 11 and throughout the countless defeats and victories with online tournaments and those IRL, I have gained maturity and knowledge that greatly helped me win this tournament.

Every player has considerably contributed to this instant and I am thankful to all of you !

It is an honor to be requalified for the 2021 Champions Trophy and to meet again with those of you who will be a part of it and to those who won't, it will be my pleasure to meet online and have fun Very Happy

Kindly,
Donut
