Suggestion for a way to improve the QN online game Wed, 15 November 2006 18:23
To DoW

There are some problems with the online game as it now stands:

1) If one of the players quits, the game is abandoned.

2) There is no opportunity to learn by playing 'bots.

3) While the box says 2-4 players, the game only plays with 3.

4) Reasons 1-3 lead to a low number of games.

5) The design of the interface is weak, and while the components are beautiful, the game board is plain.

I understand that design decisions made early on make changes difficult, but here is my suggestion.

Rewrite the entire game from scratch.

I assume this decision is an economic one, and that you will want to see what effect memoir online and TtR PC/Mac CD will have. IMO, you have a great game in Queen's Necklace, that is severely handicapped by the online version. If you have the time, energy and resources to do it all over again, I think it will rise to the level of Gang of Four or above. Morever, a PC/Mac CD of QN and/or GOF would be a natural addition to your product line (and my game library).

Thanks,
Zeno

Agreed. QN is an extraordinary game but too few people know it. Bringing bots to it would allow a whole new batch of people to try it out online and bring back the veterans who've stopped playing online because of lack of players.

Here Here!!!!

(but I am afraid DoW has abandoned this excellent game. It's a shame but that's the way of it.)

Additionally, sometimes when I use a banker, it somehow erases one of the gems I was building. I lost five emeralds that way last game. They just dissapeared.

Well, i don't really know wheather a bot was possible, because you have to look what your opp. does, waht his cards are, and you have to decide what to play when.

My suggestion:

It's really annoying that the game is abandoned when someone quit, but no one got points, or lost them. What about letting the quitter "lose", so he will lose points and let the other 2 players have a tie, to get these points. Of course there are persons to have PC-problems. So let the points be exchanged 1 hour after the Quit. And if the game will be resumed some days later, exchange the points back.

What do you think about that?

And was this possible, DoW-team?

Back in the old times, we had a feature to do exactly that.

You could vote for a penalty against the player who left the game, and if every player voted, a loss was inflicted to the player who left.

No one ever used it and we finally removed the code (and also because it was broken badly at certain times).

Hi Brice,

I understand that it is not possible to do bots, but I think the least you can do for this great game and those of us who enjoy playing it is to re-implement this feature. Maybe it won't be used so much, but if it helps a few more ppl want to play QN, then maybe it won't be so hard to find players to play.

Please consider it. Smile

Thanks,
SKM

If there is no way for a bot... then please make it so there's an option for the number of players - 2, 3 or 4 players. I just learned this and have already encountered many who wish you could just play 1 vs 1 - that would eliminate a lot of quitting. Three is not a good number. Also, too many people who know each other - so the third person is the one targetted (husband/wife were playing and they only stole and forged me even though the wife was the leader the entire game (and won) - they only hindered me - thus I did not have an enjoyable game). If you could make it for even numbered players, I think that would help. You can always get 2 people to play each other...
Thanks!
