The Various Bots Wed, 14 January 2009 05:25
I did a quick search of the forums and didn't come up with anything. But if it's been discussed before, my apologies.

anyway, I was wondering if someone could write up or point me to a list of all the bots, a description of their play style, and their general strength?

Not that I have much desire to play against a bot, but I'm sort of curious.

Ok, here comes:

NebulousBot: Play kind of...nebolously. I've even seen some good games from that bot.

DirectBot: Plays...direct. Makes roads fast and draws new tics.

DumbBot: Is just dumb

Hope this helped.

You'll find the Bots in the last 2 pages of the ranking:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/scores/ranks/?game=TT&rid =241099&S=829856165a630bb153408104c4ab875f&start=570 0&count=20

although of course, they lead all by a massive margin in number of games played Cool

if you want to look at their profiles:

And don't forget the dear departed LongBot, the best of the bots. LongBot would draw cards until he could make a 6 track, then another and so on. After all of the 6 tracks were gone, he would go after the 5 tracks, always looking for the longest available track to play on. No attempt was made to complete destination tickets. It is a measure of how bad the bots are that this was the best of them. Alas, LongBot was hated by most of the online community, because he kept scores down, and shortened the game, often winning when players had to swallow large tickets. After fielding more complaints about LongBot than anything else (including those nasty blockers), DoW removed him. LongBot does have a continued existence in the PC/Mac game, where he is Herr Doktor, the purple clad old man. When I play solitaire with the PC game (which happens infrequently), I typically choose Herr Doktor, because he is the best preparation for playing good players. Against a top player, you only have about 10 lays to make after drawing to 44 cards (sometimes 9, sometimes up to 12). Additionally, it teaches you to take the sixes that are good for you early on. LongBot's rating was never all that high, but it was about 100 points above the others, and I suspect it should have been even higher because people often agree to quit a game rather than suffer an embarrasing loss to a bot, and the losses to longBot were especially embarrasing because it was more likely that your tracks were unconnected, and all of your destinations were unmet.

So if I start a game, and everyone else drops out, and is replaced by bots, but I finish and win the game, does it count as having played the original players or the bots?

it counts as if the bots were not involved.
