  Jan 22nd Release Wed, 22 January 2003 17:34
Today:

- A new "ringer" button that allows you to 'beep' the selected player (to draw his/her attention)
- Bug fixes in the observing feature area
- If you selected cards, and click by mistake on the Pass button, a confirmation dialog will appear. This is to prevent mistakes.
- Usability improvements in the Schedule page and in the Scores page regarding outdated games.
- Fixed a serious bug on the "Play Now" orange blinker in the upper right corner

Serious bug in 22nd release. Thu, 23 January 2003 09:20
Hello,

As you might have noticed, there was a serious defect in the last release, which prevented games to have more than 3 hands. Hopefully it may have been possible to resume those stuck games.

As the faulty programmer ( Embarassed ) I'd like to say that the bug has been fixed Smile and wanted to apologize about this mess (and yes, this is still a beta version, subject to problems).

Hello

The beta-test is almost finished, and there are a few bugs we can't reproduce on our test systems.

Especially the slowness while playing bug which seems to occur on Internet Explorer with the Micro$oft VM.

We need your help: if you experience this problem, please do the following:

  1. Setup IE to enable java console:
In the 'Tools' menu -> 'Internet Options' -> Advanced and check the 3 java relative checkboxes (namely logging, java console, and JIT)
  2. Restart fully IE by closing all its open windows.
  3. Connect to Gang of Four Online.
  4. Play until the game seems really slower than at the beginning.
  5. Open the Java Console (in the view menu), select this new window in order that it is topmost:

    1. Press the 'm' key.
    2. Press the 'g' key.
    3. Press the 'm' key.
    4. Press the 'f' key.
    5. Press the 'm' key.
    6. Press the 't' key.

  6. Select the console output and send it to support@daysofwonder.com. If you can't select the console output, just try to find the javalog.txt file which might be in c:\windows\java or similar.

Thanks for your help !
Happy game !

Hi There
I bought a G4 pack yesterday at GenCon Olympia. If anyone wants to play other G4 players face to face I know a good venue in South London.

We forgot to mention that while we were releasing Queen's Necklace Online 1.0, we also made an upgrade version of Gang of Four Online.

Minor fixes include an improved ranking calculation when some players end up the game with equal scores.

Have fun,

The Gang Team

New Gang of Four web site Fri, 03 October 2003 16:37
Hello everyone:

Starting today, you can enjoy a new version of our Gang of Four web site, faturing:

  • An easy-to-use navigation bar on the left, just like in the Days of Wonder and the Pirate's Cove web sites
  • New pages with lots of content: more information about the on-line game, details about the ranking system, probabilities in combinations for the mathematically inclined players, and more

    Have fun,

The Gang team at Days of Wonder

PS: if your navigation bar shows ugly blue links and texts, then reload the page to tell your browser to load the new styles.

What's up with the Ranking? Fri, 28 November 2003 23:29
You might have noticed recently something strange with the Ranking: you moved up significantly, some players disappeared, or you disappeared.

    What's up with the Ranking?

There is nothing wrong. This is simply the growing effect of a new feature that was implemented 15 days ago:

If you do not play during 15 days, you are removed from the ranking. Nevertheless, you keep your ranking score. You are simply "inactive". Just play one game, and you will appear again on the ranking board.

This feature had been requested by many players, who found unfair that some high-ranking players would stop playing just to stay up in the charts without participating anymore.

So there is going to be an interesting fight now! There are new hot spots to take!

    Have fun,

    Yann

There is a new page on the web site that gives some (short) explanations about Robots. You will also find the complete list of Robots. Click on a name to find about its ranking.

Since yesterday, there are 2 new Robots that you might have not noticed yet: ProbaBot and Penguin1Bot.

ProbaBot is a Robot developed by Days of Wonder that uses probabilities computation. Penguin1Bot is a Robot developed by Peng (special thanks to him!), and that is much more sophisticated because it uses A.I. techniques (like GriffonBot).

By the way, it will be interesting to see which one of the two gets a better ranking Wink

To learn more about Penguin1Bot and GriffonBot, you can contact their designers by private messages or by posting on this forum.

    Have fun,

    a hand that didn't count??? Tue, 16 August 2005 11:08
I had the weirdest bug right now:
In the game against vlan-zomba-ptite' (the one vlan one) we each had 2 to 5 cards left at one time. vlan plays a card, and all of a sudden i get the screen: vlan wins. But even there it said that valn got one point for his one card. But then in the next hand he had still 0 points (and i think, the other points hadn't changed either, but i'm not sure).
so this whole hand didn't count???

i'm trying to find another version of the card game. it had pictures of privates, generals, etc on the cards. it actually makes more sense to do it this way because the game is actually based off of the millitary and such. this will be hard to find unless you actually have the old version and tell me the manufactor's name or the website to the place i can buy it. and no i'm not talking about edition 1. days of wonder didn't make it. it was before they had the rights to make a new design for the game.

    Enhancing the program ! Sun, 24 May 2009 17:02
    Hi there
i m not sure it s the right place to make this kind of demand but i ll post it anyway !

I was wondering if it would be possible to slightly reprogramm the game, in order for it to emit a small sound or bip or dring dring when a game starts !

It should be simple to do i guess !

I ask that because there are often people that wait several minutes for a game to start because there is none 4th player yet, so they do something else while waiting and then they don t notice when the game finally starts, resulting in more and more waiting for the other players, and sometimes in a game against unwanted bots !

So if the game could emit a small sound when a game starts, these situations could be avoided by simply reminding everybody they were waiting for a game Smile

Thanks for what you can do.

And sorry for my bad english, i just never learned how to wright it Smile

    DRAGON CUP

GOF Team Cup from november the 24th to december the 18th 2009

1- Organization and progress of the tournament

16 teams made up by at least 4 to at most 6 players will be distributed between 4 groups (A, B, C and D) by drawing.

First and second of each group will be qualified for semi finals.

Qualifying matches will take place on the first two weeks (from 24/11 to 04/12)

Teams of each group will meet 4 evenings per week :

    On Tuesday at 20h30
    On Wednesday at 20h30
    On Thursday at 20h30
    On Friday at 22h30

Each evening, players will play 3 games.

Semi Finals will take place between the 8th and the 11th of december.

Qualified teams will be distributed as follows :

    Semi-final 1 Semi-final 2

    1st group A 2nd group A
    2nd group B 1st group B
    1st group C 2nd group C
    2nd group D 1st group D

Cup Final will take place between the 15th and the 18th of december.

The first and second of each semi final will be qualified to the Final.

    2- Ranking :

    1st 7 points
    2nd 4 points
    3rd 2 points
    4th 1 point

    3- Rules
Inscriptions for the cup will open on september the 1st and will close on the 15th of november.

Each team will be led by a captain who will communicate to technical direction the list of the players composing his team.
The list of players and their plays' schedules must be sent fast (before the monday's night of each tournament's weeks)

Games will be opened by a different team each day following the order of the group's drawning

    team 1 on tuesday,
    team 2 on wednesday,
    team 3 on thursday,
    team 4 on friday.

All games will be watchable by all but cards can be hidden.
It will be the best ranked player's option to show the cards or not.

Each player will only play once a week.
Only teams with more than 4 players will be allowed a substitution of player in case of absence of the planned player.

If a player is missing at the time scheduled, he will be replace after 30 minutes by a real player or a bot.

If a bot is substitute, his team will get the points won by it but for each game with a bot the team will lose two points (no matter the result of the bot).

If a player leaves a game, others should do their best to wait for his return so the game won't be distorted.

Any contender of the tournament shall prove fairness, respect and tolerance to others players whatever their tactical points of view might be.

So we can enjoy the cup and not fill the lobby nor the forums too much, it is asked to players to send Private Messages if they can't hold what they need to say.

Any improper behaviour affecting the good progress of the tournament will be punished.
Looking to the seriousness of the fault, penalties will be given : points can be cancelled, a player can be removed and eventually a whole team can be removed.

    Enjoy the Dragon Cup !

Strategy for 3 vs. 1: Laggards vs. Leader Tue, 10 January 2012 17:44
    What is 3 v 1?
When three losing players must rally against a clear leader in the game. The object of this scenario is to prevent or minimize the leader's chance to play his weak cards. Losing players must be highly cooperative for this strategy to work. Keeping control among the three losing players will ensure the leader will be left with more, if not, the most cards at the end of each round.

Be Aware of the Direction of Play in Each Round
Most players adopt a "weak to strong hand" style of play. Therefore, starting hands are usually weak hands, so make sure the leader is fourth at the start of each round. Ideally, rounds should start adjacently and directed away from the leader, forcing her to play against a stronger, rather than weaker hand. Losing players should defer winning the round to either of the players adjacent to the leader, so that subsequent hands start in the way described herein.

Play a Strong or Small Hand, Against the Leader
This is especially effective when the leader is second to play at the start of the round. If you don't have a strong 5 card hand, start the round with a small hand, like a single or pair. This minimizes how many cards the leader can play. Take note that often the leader will force his GOF early in order to take control of the game.

    Losing Player Should Not Pass
If you are nearest to losing the game, passing is prohibitive in this strategy. Remember, there are two other players helping you stay in the game. The goal of the laggard is to get down to 7 or less cards in the round.

7 or Less Cards to the Laggard, 7 or More Cards to the Leader
Laggards can use this number as a guiding rule to playing or passing. This is the ideal configuration at the end of each round.

Know When to Take Control and When to Give it Up
This is not easy to do but hopefully your intuition will tell you know when to take control and when to pass it on to another player.

    Play your Cards
This is self-explanatory, but cooperation means you must play your cards as often as you can. Your fellow laggards are not mind readers, but they can count what cards have played, so do your best to play your cards.

If done properly, this strategy is needed only for a couple of rounds if that, or until all of players are more or less on even playing ground. One player might first announce a "3v1" on chat before commencing.

Hopefully this posts translates well in other languages. Thanks!

      News + Pre-order in Europe Thu, 28 August 2003 14:04
On the temporary web site (http://www.piratescovegame.com), you can now view a picture of the box, and download the games rules.

If you are located in Europe, you can also pre-order the game on our secure web store. This will guarantee that you will be the first to get the product. We should have the boxes the last week of September. The game will be available for pre-order in the US a bit later.

Piratenbucht vs. Pirate's Cove (Rules changes) Mon, 01 September 2003 16:40
The following was posted on Spielfrieks, and is posted here at the request of Yann of Days of Wonder. It is my observation after reading through the newly posted rules for Pirate's Cove.

Wow, I just got through reading over the Days of Wonder rules set for Pirate's Cove. They indicate they have made a few "minor" changes. I say they've made some substantial changes. Admittedly, I haven't played the new game (Piratenbucht is one of my favorites, however), but reading the rules has me salivating! Days of Wonder advises that the rules may change a bit more, but for the present here are some of the numerous "minor" changes I noted:

    1. Legendary Pirates
There are now 6 Legenday Pirates (not just Blackbeard), although only one or two will ever be on the board at the same time. One or two pirate ships are placed on opposite sides of the board (2 with three players - 1 Legendary Pirate with 4 or 5 players) and advance "west" one island each game turn. A summary pirate card accompanies each ship. If/when that pirate is defeated, a new Legendary Pirate card is drawn and placed beside the ship. This new pirate will have different strengths and weaknesses from the previous Legendary Pirate. Besides Blackbeard, the Pirate ship might be The Flying Dutchman Phantom ship, Captain Hook, Ann Bonny and Mary Read, or The Cacafuego.

    2. Tavern Cards:
The Tavern Cards have been divided into 6 different types:

    a) Parrot Cards (a totally new addition to the game)
    * There are four different wise old parrots that once travelled with an old pirate. They can give you special help if you own one. Once you get one (at the Tavern) he will give you special knowledge or ability - (i.e., carry unlimited treasures; roll 6 dice in combat; fire all your cannons; adds "20" to your speed). They come into effect as soon as they are drawn and remain on your ship mat until killed (each parrot is expert in either hull, crew, cannons, or sail) They take the first two hits on whichever part of the ship they advise (thus, in addition to their powers, they act similarly to the Mastercraft cards).

    b) Mastercraft cards (replacing the Veteran Crew, etc. cards that absorbed the first two hits). Now, however, only one of these may be on a ship at a time. Further, a Mastercraft card may be repaired at the end of a battle by payment of 1 gold during the Upgrade phase.
Mastercraft cards may only be placed on a ship during the Upgrade Phase. If both a Mastercraft card and a Parrot Card are on the same ship section - the Mastercraft cards take the hit before the Parrot. (Smart parrot)

    c) Combat cards (now organized into two types: Battle & Volley)
There are five different types of battle cards and three types of Volley cards. Some of these are similar to the Piratenbucht cards and others are totally new. However, the entire set of combat cards are much better organized in Pirate's Cove.

    d) Event cards - Seven different event cards (one event has 2 cards, so there are actually 8 event cards in the Tavern deck. These events are played during different phases of the game: either at the End of the Treasure Phase, the Beginning of the Navigation phase, the End of the Navigation Phase, or during the Upgrade Phase - depending on which Event card it is. Most of these cards are totally new:
    * Consort (for example) - forces a player of your choice to share half of htis upcoming booty with you! And if he goes to Treasure Island to bury treasures or gold - you split any fame he collects with him.
    * Crow's Nest - Forces the selection of islands on the Navigation wheel to be done in clockwise order starting with the player of your choice! (You can choose to go last or first, etc. after you've seen where others are going!)
    * Going On the Account - You can increase any 1 section of your ship by one level at no cost etc., etc.
    e) Fame Cards (Tall Tale cards in Piratenbucht)

Over all the Tavern Cards appear to have been completely revamped and are much more important to the play of the game.

    3. The Bits:
The rules, board, and bits appear to be of excellent quality -
gorgeous in fact. I loved Mystery of the Abbey - I think I'll REALLY love this one. Also included are brown wooden cubes for the treasures rather than the square cardboard chits of Piratenbucht.
Further, the dice are brown wood as well - carrying out the "shiver my timbers" theme.
The player mats are changed - with the Hull, Guns, Crew, and Sails indicators running from left to right rather then bottom to top. The gold is no longer kept on the mat, but is instead placed beside the mat. I take it the wooden cubes (treasure chests) will be kept in a small circle on the mat. Further, the mat now contains a space for the Parrot Card to be placed, if you're fortunate enough to have one.

    4. Game Turn Sequence
The game turn sequence has been better organized and is much
cleaner. There are six distinct phases:
    * Treasure (reveal new treasure cards on the five islands)
    * Navigation (select your destination on the Captain's wheel)
    * Combat
    * Plunder
    * Upgrade
    * Move Black Ship(s) and Check Treasures

    5. Combat Phase
The combat phase appears to have been cleaned up a bit. There is now a distinct "Prepare For Battle" phase during which Battle Cards are played in rounds. After all Battle Cards are played, the Volley Rounds begin. During each Volley round a player may play a Volley Card. (Volley Cards last for only one single round of firing; Battle Cards last for the entire Combat Phase.

    6. Fame Points For Fleeing Ships
Unless I missed something in Piratenbucht, the rules here have
changed. Now, when a ship flees a battle, the remaining ships get Fame points ONLY if the fleeing ship took at least one hit before fleeing.

    7. Mutiny
If a ship flees BEFORE taking a hit, it runs the risk of mutiny. The owner rolls 1 die. If he rolls a 1 a mutiny occurs. He loses all his gold & treasure and -2 fame points. So, think before you run!!

    8. The Game Ends In A Tie
This sounds like fun! IF the game ends in a tie, all those who tied must fight to the death! The winner wins the game!

    9. Four Blank Cards
In addition there will be 4 blank cards so you can add your own
    ideas to the game!

    10. Play Online
Eventually the folks at DOW will have the game online, and
your "password" will be imprinted on the back of your rules booklet.

Overall, I'm quite excited about the changes. It has taken
Piratenbucht to another level in my opinion. Of course, it will be interesting to see how all the new cards will "mesh" in a real game. I'd buy it just for the beautiful graphics! Can't wait.
