Memoir 44 D-Day Landings Expansion Some Designer Notes Tue, 08 April 2014 05:06
The idea for a large scale Memoir 44 expansion really came about a couple of years ago. I wanted to do something on a grand scale for the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and the 10th Anniversary of the Memoir 44 board game and I believe Days of Wonder has really nailed it with D-Day Landings.

First off this expansion, by design, is really much more than just one giant six-map Ultimate D-Day Landings game. Sure, if you have a number of friends, all with a copy of the Memoir 44 game and a couple of prior expansions and the space to set up the six maps, what you and your friends will share is an experience that is simply over the top thematically and visually.

For us, however, us being the guys in the Orlando area game group, enjoyed endless hours of gaming, while playtesting each and every map combination of the D-Day Landings expansion.
- 6 Single maps, Sword Beach with the British Airborne landings, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, and the American Airborne Landings, one-on-one with one breakthrough deck
- 5 OverThrough map combinations, with 8 players, using Overlord Command cards and rules
- 5 OverThrough map combinations, played one-on-one with one breakthrough deck
- 5 OverThrough map combinations, as Double map Variant with 4 players and two breakthrough decks
- 2 Triple Map Landings by Nation games, one-on-one with one breakthrough deck
- 2 Triple Map Landings by Nation games, with 6 players and three breakthrough decks
And the Ultimate D-Day Landings game, with 12 players, each map with its own breakthrough deck

That is a total of 26 ways to play. Okay, one map combination we never did try, was to play a Triple Map Landings by Nation with 8 players using the Overlord Command cards and rules, but I am certain this would work and could be accomplished with some minor Overlord rule adjustments.

From reading the forums, I see there have been some concerns raised and interesting discussion about what exactly players are going to need to play the various D-Day Landings scenarios. Truthfully, I also found that setting up the Ultimate D-Day Landings scenario was difficult and I had to ask a few friends to help supply some material for this giant game. Overall, however, we have found the materials required for most scenarios are not overwhelming. If you can gather the following Memoir materials, it should provide most of what is needed to set up and play the single maps and most Overthrough games:
- 2 copies of a Memoir 44 core game
- 1 Equipment Pack expansion
- Badges and tokens from the Terrain Pack
- Breakthrough deck from Winter War
- Badges and tokens from D-Day Landings expansion
- Overlord expansion

Of course if you want the best visuals, 2 Mediterranean Theater expansions would be nice and to insure you always have units to field when rolling for reinforcements, an additional core game would fill the bill and the extra core game will also assure you of having ample units for the OverThrough (Overlord) scenarios, unless you do not mind using the cardboard unit tokens found in the Overlord expansion.

The new reinforcements rules presented us with one of our biggest challenges, because there was really no way to tell what reinforcement units would be rolled and therefore what units will be needed in addition to the units initially deployed in a scenario. It was a challenge, but I would say, it also adds to the overall suspense and excitement of each game.

Players roll for reinforcement units each turn and the roll may also provide a player with additional On the Move orders as well, so even if players are playing with the Overlord Command card deck or you do not have ample breakthrough decks, units can still get moving by the reinforcement rolls.

Supported Infantry and Supported Armor are two new troop types that are being introduced in D-Day Landings. Their unique rules have been around with our group for some time and we were just waiting for the right occasion to debut them.

Before closing, I guess I should comment on the time it takes to play through a scenario. The Ultimate D-Day Landings scenario with 12 players played from 3.5 to 4.5 hours and a single map, two player scenario, in less than 90 minutes. Of course, your playing time and enjoyment may vary.

Although some have expressed concern that this expansion is not for beginners, I would say they are correct, a lot of Memoir material in needed to play the scenarios in this expansion, but we have found, that like an Overlord game, a new player can sit down and still participate and enjoy the spectacle of D-Days Landings, when mentored by his neighboring field generals.

It really is amazing to think that Memoir 44 has been around for 10 years now and this year Days of Wonder will present the biggest Memoir 44 expansion, size wise, to date. Thanks to each and everyone who has supported the game and made this all possible.

Enjoy!
