Hi Sgt. Carter
I don't know if there is any M44 style game on Anglo-Zulu war or American Civil War, but I do know that there are other two Mr. Borg Series on Ancient and Napoleonics time: Command and Colors Ancients and Command and Colors Napoleonics have both no miniatures, with units represented by wooden blocks. Aside that their system is the same of M44 and Battlelore.
And then, just in these days, it will be published an other Borg game on medieval Japan: Samurai Battles.
Hoping to be of some help,

A Japanese game sounds interesting.
Wooden blocks stink.

I agree on both counts!!
I'm interested in getting the Japanese game and I really like Richard Borg's games so I might end up getting the other ones (even though they use blocks), but in my mind, nothing beats Memoir '44 for production and fun!
Good luck in your design ideas.
