game/player list in lobby Sat, 07 May 2005 15:30
Yesterday I and Thaddäus wanted to see Optimus and Rek play two tournament games. We saw when Optimus made the game, but when Rek went to it, we both couldn't find the game. I looked the game list up and down several times, but couldn't see the game. Thad didn't find the game either so it's not just my eyes. I found both games when the guys had taken over 30 cards already.

This is not the first time this has happened. And it is usual that I find the game when almost all the train cards are taken and players are just starting to make first move (or have done the first moves already).

Is there something wrong and the games don't appear in the list always at once?

Or are the games jumping up and down in the list so that it is difficult to find them? (it doesn't seem like that)

In which order do the games go in the game list when started?
It would be very good improvement if they went as a last game to the list, so that one knows from where to look.

I really hope improvements to the game and playerlists, so it becomes easier to find the playerfriends and their games from lobby when it is crowded. In an other thread it was suggested that players in the buddy list could be seen in different colour. I think it is very good idea and hope that it is done.

Thank you for a very good online game.

pilke,

All the games don't appear, only the 60 games closest to the end can be seen

If there are more than 60 games in process, you can't watch a game from the beginning

It's a real problem in another situation : when I got disconnect, I don't always have the command "resume" and If it happens at the beginning of the game, I have to wait for a rather long time to see the game and join it ( imagine what the bot can do during that long time Crying or Very Sad )

Thank you Lea a lot for the informantion. I think it would be good that it would read some where in the loppy that there are only 60 oldest games in the list. That way people don't spend their time looking for something that can not be found. It should at least read in the "information about game list" that comes when the ?-mark is pressed and mouse in over the game list. Now it says "The GameList displays any open games and games already in progress", which is not true.

Why can't all the games be in the game list?
I would love to follow the tournament games in the future too and see the games from the beginning.

Why can't all the games be in the game list?

Because we were spending way too much bandwidth per client when propagating the table list. This was not scalable (and not affordable for us).

Brice,

A suggestion...and you know I usually come up with some good ones.

I think there are various posts in the Ticket to Ride category that perhaps we should have some FAQ list to answer questions like this (since I didn't know about it until I came into this message).

Probably should be sectioned up for Ticket to Ride, Europe and online play, since obviously this would apply to the latter and not the other 2.

Caboose, that sounds a good idea.

About the game list. I still wonder is it the best way to show the 60 oldest games? Are people interested in seeing only the ends of the games and the games of the slowest players? Or the closed games or games against robot? I know I am not.

Like today a finnish player asked me to watch her game (so that I could give tips for her playing style after the game). I looked the end of the list whole time, but the game never got there. So we have to do it again some slower time of a day.

If the list would show the 60 newest games people would have time to go to the game before it disappears from the list.

And is the information of how many points people have that time so important that it has to show in the list? Would it take less bandwidth if that information wouldn't be uptaded constantly.
At least I don't use that information at all. I like to percentage though that tells how big part of the game is played.
Still I would rather have all the games in the list than that infromation. If the games just came to the list and left when they are played, wouldn't it takes less bandwidth? There wouldn't be so many things to update in the list then.

Totaly agree with pilke. Showing the 60 newest games would make much more sence to me. Especially the Dumbot-games are not very interesting.

You are right in some way ... but don't forget players who want to resume a game after they got thrown out and this DumBot-Thing took their place. These games have to appear in the list.

For what it's worth, I agree wholeheartedly.

Y'know how the top players are closing their games more now? Well, watching those points from the lobby is the only way to follow the game.

However, if the developers implement the show-only-the-sixty-newest-games deal then there really won't be any reason to update them since they would be gone by the time the points really matter. Of course, this is only during peak hours that that problem would occur.
