2nd tournament - 1st round matches Fri, 03 June 2005 03:39
SKMorefield and I just played our 1st round match.

Since I barely know enough of computers to work with them, I don't have a clue how to incorporate screenshots in this message (Jac, thanks anyway for sending the screenshots of the last two matches). Maybe it's somewhat too much fuzz for a 1st-round match anyway.

It was a typical "who gets the longest route?"-game. Not much blocking, though. I think we both hid our routes quite well.

1st game: SKMorefield 94 - bassie 122

I had Duluth - El Paso and Toronto - Miami. SKMorefield had Sault Sainte Marie - Oklahoma City and Chicago - New Orleans, I think. We fulfilled our tickets, I had one six more and the longest route.

2nd game: bassie 121 - SKMorefield 93

Don't remember (no screenshots).

3rd game: SKMorefield 100 - bassie 113

We both agreed this was the best game in the session. I had Duluth - Houston and Kansas City - Houston (so I got lucky there). I didn't get any wildcards (OK, I drew some open cards, too) so to keep some flexibility I only started claiming when I had 44 cards. SKMorefield had already covered Calgary - Sault Sainte Marie (tickets: Chicago - Santa Fe and Sault Sainte Marie - Oklahoma City), so I could still zigzag all my way up from Houston to Duluth. I had saved up 10 purple wagons, so I could claim Duluth - Toronto as well. In the meantime, SKMorefield had not spilt a wagon, too by connecting Santa Fe and Oklahoma City (via Seattle) to his route. On the other end, he connected Chicago and Atlanta as well. But I succeeded in connecting Montréal, New York and Dallas to claim the longest route by a one-point margin: 45-44!

4th game: bassie 113 - SKMorefield 98

Lousy game. I had a silly block of LA (he didn't need to go there of course) and we were both not paying attention to the longest route. I won because I got lucky with my destination cards: LA-Helena and LA-Chicago (what did I block LA for anyway?).

4-0, looks like a sweep but in fact I had some narrow escapes. SKMorefield has beaten me before, and succeeded again in covering up his routes very well. The only time I could block him was in the last game when he had to fulfill San Francisco - Atlanta. But of course he had taken all the white cards available so I could not block Little Rock - Nashville. He was just somewhat unlucky with his tickets and to find me in such good form. Thanks for playing; I am sure you will get your revenge at a later stage.

Props to you Bassie!! Smile

You played excellent and frankly I feel like I did the best I could have done (except for a missed route connect the first game which wouldn't have made a difference in result anyway). Close games but you earned the sweep. Good luck the rest of the way. I'll be rooting for ya!

Best,
SKM

----EDIT - Regarding my signature, this time I had your ticket to the next round Wink but don't worry I'll be back... Mad Wink

Bassie, I'm impressed.

When I first started to introduce my big mouth on the Dutch forum, challenging my fellow county men to unleash wrath upon the TTR rankings, nobody responded. This was the main reason I moved to the English forum.

But now it seems that you and Rode Katers are definitely two opponents that have to be taken seriously. You defeated SKMorefield and Rode Katers defeated TheKid last week. I feel a little behind here... Embarassed

You two are also top 100 players before me. Well done.

The funny thing is that apart from being Dutch all three, we seem to have another thing in common: red cats. Smile

Whether you guys are my compagnions or my rivals I haven't figured out yet. But it sure is great to know I'm not the only Dutchie around here. Just don't interfere with my plans to become the number one champion around here.

D.I.S.

By the way, I thought I was also in the 2nd Tournament. How come I haven't heard yet who my opponent is? Confused

You think you're so special that you're gonna be informed personally?

Sorry to disappoint your highness but it looks like you're gonna have to check the appropriate thread like the rest of us.

Why, thanks! SKMorefield, thank you too. I hope I will have the same dignity after I lose in the tournament... I have to keep some modesty though. I played rek in the game after, drew the two classic winning tickets, and got blocked all the way through to lose 38-84. Embarassed So I will need some practice for the second round...

That's easily explained. Rode Katers and I are old friends, and when we were searching the net for an avatar we found some red cats we both wanted to use. He even took their name (non-dutchies: rode katers = red (male) cats).

I read the forums and I like your contribution to it. It would be great playing each other one day.

And there it is.

Rode Katers won the first match and then I took the next four. I don't remember the scores or tickets, but they were pretty similar most of the time. Lots of middle games being played. Rode played well and the match was no easy task, but I managed to take it.

Thaddaus 4 - plcrams 2

Congratulations to Thaddaus - she played brilliantly. Luck was pretty even too. She thrashed me in 2 games, just getting in my way a lot. The rest were pretty close, 2 extremely (we took one of those each. I wish I'd won, but who can be upset about Thaddaus getting through to the next round?

More details will follow later.

I agree with that Smile But, still I have to say, that I already am a little bit nervous.. My first tournament ever and I will play now with Thad and she has won 2 of the 3 games we have played together (a week ago). Let's see if pilke's tournament will end very soon. Fortunately, in that case, it is nice Thad, who will continue.

Tex and I played our first round matches yesterday. First game went to Tex, as he wrote a while ago. Yesterday we played the rest of them. Finally scores 4-1 to me. Smile

Tex played well, and his blocks nearly got me, but I survived.
Results of these games were like this:

2nd game: I had Seattle-NY and Denver-ElPaso, Tex got Winnipeg-Houston and SSM-Oklahoma. I managed to get longest route. 113-92.

3rd game: I had Calgary-SaltLake city and Denver-ElPaso, Tex got Toronto-Miami and NY-Atlanta. Longest route to me. 113-92

4th game: I had Denver-ElPaso and Chicago-New Orleans, Tex had Montreal-New Orleans and Montreal-Atlanta, longest route to me, 115-98.

5th game: I had Vancouver-Montreal and Chicago-New Orleans, Tex had Denver-ElPaso and KansasCity-Houston. Longest route to me. 110-92.

Last game was the most difficult to me, because Tex blocked my Van-Montr. route quite hard, but I was lucky to have so many choices and cards, so I survived. And when I got Vancouver-Montreal finished, rest of the game was just playing, I didn´t plan to finish my other ticket at all, just to finish as quickly as possible.

Thank you Tex again, it was nice to play with you. Smile

Tex promised to send screenshots later and maybe more information as well.

Rek,

please check this over. I think this is the status so far:

thekid
unknowniac

Anu_
Raz

Womble
winner of Optimus/silvertrain

El Soy
winner of osamus/Franck

Wernerus
leachris

Bassie
winner of Rek/mila

Jac_
winner br'er rabbit/changedgirl

Thaddaus
Pilke

if this is how you want the tournament to go, second round could begin for some.

Final games of Optimus vs. Silvertrain:

game 4)
Optimus 72 - Silvertrain 113

game 5)
Optimus 78 - Silvertrain 111

game 6)
Optimus 116 - Silvertrain 93

So Optimus won 4 - 2.
Most games were close, he played very well, worth his ranking.
Thanks Optimus, good luck against womble.

Silvertrain

I didn't see any objections to this format and it is kind of cool to know what your path is, so let's go with Onyx's tree.

I'll post it in a more user friendly format sometime today.

Oh, and as for 2nd round games, unless there will be a scheduling problem otherwise, I think we should wait for the first round to end so that we don't get people way ahead of others.

Set your browser not to scale it to the screen and it'll look better.

Here's the results from the first two games between changedgirl and myself.

Game 1 goes for changedgirl by a margin of about 10 points she had vancouver-montreal and kansas city to houston and I had portland to phoenix and ste marie to oklahoma city. I was unable to complete stm to oklahom (short one stupid yellow card).

Game 2 goes for myself, I had winn-little rock, ny-atlanta, and montreal-new orleans. Changedgirl had chicago-new orleans, montreal-atlanta, and duluth-el paso. This was pretty much a battle for the East coast. My route was one of the ugliest I think I've ever seen. I managed to win by getting a couple extra sixes. Score 111-106. Very close game and easily could have gone her way. Next games are up in the air at this point. I'll try and post when we schedule them.

if you agree I would like to proceed with my 2nd round matches right away - if Optimus agrees - as somewhen in the near future I will not be available for at least some days.

Changedgirl and I finally finished our first round matches so here are the results (I apologize changedgirl if I get some of your tickets wrong...I may get some of mine wrong)

Game 3
rabbit Smile 112
changedgirl 101

I had Vancouver to Montreal (+20) and New York to Atlanta (-6). I'm not sure what her tickets were on this one but she completed both of them) it was very close and the longest train made the difference at the end.

Game 4
rabbit 95
changedgirl Smile 123

Again I am unsure about changedgirl's tickets but she completed them. We thought it was going to be close at the end but it obviously wasn't. I definitely got outplayed.

Game 5
rabbit Smile 106
changedgirl 89

I had denver to pittsburgh and something else. Changedgirl had chicago to new orleans and something else, whatever it was, it wasn't an easy ticket in combination with Chicago-New Orleans. She was unable to complete either of the tickets, not because I was blocking but because she was forced to try and pick up points elsewhere b/c of the crappy tickets. Good luck for me I guess.

Game 6
rabbit Smile 117
changedgirl 92

Changedgirl had Chicago to Santa Fe and Calgary to Salt Lake City (again with the difficult tickets). I had Montreal to Atlanta and Toronto to Miami.

Anyways..this match easily could have gone the other way. I'm looking forward to the next round.
