Hey, I remember his surrender in 1974 !
30 years in the jungle. Shocked
It was incredibble for me at that time to think that some Japanese soldiers didn't want to end the war.

The simple fact of the matter was that surrender was considered dishonorable and loyalty to the Emperor was everything. I believe in this case, the soldier in question did not know the war was over. In his mind, his country was still at war, and thus he remained at his post. What is most unfortunate here is that he killed so many after the war did indeed end.

If you look at the number of Japanese prisoners taken during many of the islands landings it is indeed very small compared to the number of troops in a given garrison. Usually this was a handful for a force that often numbered in the thousands. In one example, 28 men were taken from a force of over 5,000 and some of those who surrendered were just laborers.

Not sure I would consider his behavior heroic, but maybe his foolishness is worth remembering as a lesson in the folly of mindless obedience to military authority.

He was a soldier who believed he was doing his duty to his country and Emperor.
