The Nations Cup

As most of you know, English is not my native language, but I'm sure you'll understand the following. If for any reason not, PM me and I'll gladly explain or translate. Jeg taler også Dansk!
In many sports, representing ones country is the most glorious thing to achieve - think of the Olympics, the Davis Cup or the Football World Cup (for our neighbours on the other side of the Atlantic: I mean the game with the round ball) .
With Ticket to Ride being one of the greatest sports of all times , I think it is high time to have our own Nations Cup.
Here is my plan: Each team has players of the same nationality. Under his sole discretion the TD may grant international teams. The teams play against one another to decide who is the best TTR nation.
An example with 8 teams divided into 2 groups:
Group A Group B
USA I aka the Dream Team Team Orange (Nederland)
la douce France the Suomi gentlemen
the Suomi ladies USA II
The Alps (Österreich/Helvetia) Die Deutsche Mannschaft
In each group, we will have a round robin, so all competitors play against one another once. Every team consists of at least
four players. If there are more, the team captain decides every match which four will be playing.
Let's assume the first matches in Group A will be USA-France and
Suomi-Alps. Before the match, the tournament director (TD) pairs the 8 players according to their ranking. For example, Jac_ plays Anu_and let's say Jac_ turns out to be the winner this time (sorry Anu_, it is just an example ), the result being 3-4 (best-of-seven). Let's assume the other games for this match result in 4-0, 1-4, and 2-4. Then, after the first round, assuming USA-France remains undecided (4-2, 1-4, 1-4, 4-3), the scores in this group will be:
Group A
1. The Alps 3 (12-10)
2. la douce France 2 (13-10)
3. The Dream Team 2 (10-13)
4. The Suomi Ladies 1 (10-12)
After 3 rounds both groups have a first and second place. Then we have cross finals. That means First of group A plays second of group B and vice versa. The winners play the final.
Some additional rules:
- One week per match (yes redPEPPER, I learnt from the other tournaments )
- Semi-finals and finals will be best-of-9
- Every team will have a captain who communicates directly to the TD on tournament matters, such as which players will play, the results, scheduling problems etcetera.
- The TD (non-playing) will make all the decisions during the tournament and I will not allow a protest board
- Together with the TD I will set a date (probably the end of August) until which teams can join the tournament (to all captains: please complete your team before you subscribe it to the TD).
- I don't see a need to maximize the number of teams. 7 or 11 teams would be hard to schedule, but I'm sure we'll find a way.
- I will be the captain of Team Orange
- I would like to advice captains to form teams of at least 5 people so we won't have problems with scheduling when someone is on holidays.
Some questions (for the ones who are still reading ):
- Do you like this idea?
- Do you have any suggestions?
- Rode Katers, D.I.S., would you join my team? Can a fourth (and
fifth) ambitious Dutchie who wants to join send me a PM?
- tjandjahall, would you like to be our TD?
As a final note, I hope you like this idea as much as I do. Joe
Average can join , top players can play other top players, and I'm sure some spicy nationalism will ensure exciting and close matches.
I'm looking forward to meet you all in the tournament!
cu soon, bas

This is a great idea Bassie! For a small country you would start off with a pretty good Dutch team with the three of you and adding one more. As for Americans, I took a look and was surprised by how few there were in the top 50. Excluding msande75 who plays multiplayer, there are only 5, 4 of whom participate in the forums and would see this: thekid, br'er/fond, ElSoyo, and myself. From what I know about them I would imagine all those folks would be up to the idea if they have time. (????)
If Rek can't find any other Canadians who play TTR up there in the frozen tundra where the reindeer graze he could probably take everyone on and win, but if he wanted teammates he could join the Americans or another country.
The real question is who would represent the Germans, who are very well represented in the top 40 with at least half the spots and probably more. Raz and Osamu are the highest ranked, but there are many other excellent German players who I imagine would be chomping at the bit at this opportunity.
Finland would also do well, but that goes without saying...
Poor Yaron... any more Israeli players? Maybe he could team up with Australia (Plcrams) and neutral Switzerland, current home of our Cinderella Jac.
France would also do OK. I'm sure Lea and Buzzcocks can come up with some players.
This might be interesting!
Best,
SKM

I will be holding off on accepting or declining the request that I direct this tournament until after the Open Tournament is concluded and I have had a chance to present some commentary on difficulties encountered during the Open Tournament and ideas I have for reducing such problems in the future. (It would, of course, be quite inappropriate for me to post concerning that before the conclusion of the tournament.)
Might I ask, why divide the teams into two groups? Unless you get quite a number of teams - more than I would expect - you should be able to run the whole tournament as a round robin. If you really want a finals match, you just play off the top two teams from the round robin. For up to about eight teams or so, a complete round robin shouldn't take too long to run.

Thank you SKM I, Anu_ and Wuonex are in the finnish team, but I don't know anymore finnish players who play 2-player games. I think webcard is required, isn't it? My husband won't play and he and the husband of Anu doesn't have a webcard anyway. But we are looking for the 4th player and we are sure we get a team.

I am not so high ranked, but I would like to join the German team. Like cinderella Jac_ is my current home Switzerland, but I am native German.
The best ranked German player should start to create the German team. Maybe it is a good idea to have five players with one substitute player.

Ah Jac, OK then! That gives plenty of Canadians. I think each team should probably have at least 5 players with a 6th in there if possible just in case someone can't play a match. I would imagine something like Davis Cup, where a best of 5 matches is played. (???) Players could be seeded 1-5 each match according to rank or the judgement of the captain. What do you think Bassie?
Some teams might think strategically and play their best player in the #2 slot and sacrifice the #1 slot... say if they are playing a team that is top-heavy. There would be strategy like that before the matches even start.
Leachris I know you don't like tjandjahall but I do think we would need someone with his skills and (hopefully) time to organize something as complicated as this would be, a Swiss draw. From what I have read I know there have been problems with the Open for various reasons, but as tj said I think he and everyone can learn from those to make an even better one.

Hello!
Thanks Bassie for the good idea. I'd love to join Team Finland, of course. I don't care if there is only one or more groups. If there are more than one group I think there should be a lottery or some other way to share the teams objectively.
In my opinion the main point when choosing the teams should be nationality. If there's not enough players in one country they could combine two country or other geographical area. There could be for example Team Fralgium (France & Belgium) or Team Asia (for Yaron).
If there's no more than one team from each country/area, every country should have equal opportunities to win. So maybe no Sweden I and II or Andorra Gents and Andorra Ladies in the same tournament.
I think every team playing against each other is the best way but it's possible to have a very long tournament then. Groups are ok for me if they are chosen randomly. Or more complicated.. if the ranks of all the players in one team are added together and then the groups are created by rank order of nations and then.... no, that's too complicated way
Well, there was not much new in my text here but I just wanted to say that idea of The Nations Cup is great and I hope it will be true someday.

i consider myself as european (german/french, married to an austrian, living in the states), so i would like to have a group with some international players who are not represented in the announcement.
I am thinking of
yaron (israel)
plcrams (australian)
if someone else wants to join just pm me.
I don't care for nationality!

Wernerus is not a German player, he is from Vienna, Austria.
Angel9, Katzenfrau, Wernerus and myself could build quite a strong Vienna team, consisting just of two families. (mother or daughter could play Katzenfrau, as Angel9, Wernerus and I don't play this account any more - since approx. 1 month)
On the other hand, none of us is too eager to play a tournament at all, so I don't know...

Hello Bassie !
I had time to think about many things yesterday ( I played only one game, unbelievable )
and I really feel better .
Your idea is so great that I can't put my own interests above the all nation's interests
I changed my mind ( but you know, only idiots never change their mind, that's what I ever said )
I said I would not join any other tournament but here, with the team, it's not the same stress I guess .
And I prefer to play WITH kotay than AGAINST him
( hi "petit poisson" , I was not kind especially with you )
Bassie , how to decide who is the leader ?
the highest ranked ? the oldest ? only a woman ? the one with the most games ?
The only problem ( I hope it wouldn't be a real problem, is that I'll be on holidays ( without internet ) until the 1st of august !
Nico06 would like to be in the french team but can only be available from the 18th of august !
I try to find other players for the french team !
VIVE LA FRANCE !
Cu all very soon !

Cool. Let us know what he says. Still haven't heard from thekid or br'er/fond yet, but I know thekid is offline for now because of internet problems. I sent him an PM just in case, and if I don't hear from br'er/fond I'll send him a PM also. That would make 5 players for the USA team. If nobody higher-ranked wants to captain the team I'll be glad to, but if someone else is interested that's totally OK as well.
