Is the Overlord expansion necessary Tue, 30 June 2015 22:24
Since the end of last year I've been playing Memoir 44 together with a friend almost every Sunday evening. We got addicted quickly and by now I've bought several expansions. They remain sealed for now, cause we're following the manual quite strictly. We're now at the point that only the last normal scenario of the base game remains. Next up would be the overlord version of Omaha.

The game mentions the additional rules you can download from the website, but there's also the overlord expansion. Does this box provide any additional value? I have two base games, so I got enough plastic soldiers and two boards. Are there other cards in the deck?

An Overlord deck that doubles the number of cards. The cards shown icons to increase ease of play. 2 sets of dice are included. Cardboard chits to substitute for plastic pieces (for those with one set) also come with the expansion.
Was nice to have for the cards - my opinion.

The Overlord deck doesn't contain any new cards, but it incorporates the special OL rules into the cards. For example, Their Finest Hour tells each Field General to roll 4d for orders, and Pincer Move explains the special way that it's played. If some of the players aren't very experienced, this is handy.

I forget the number of cards in the OL deck, but think of it as roughly two regular decks. There are doubles of Ambush, Their Finest Hour, Firefight, etc.

That makes it interesting, I thought it was the same deck as the base game. Would avoid having to sort them out when using the decks of two games.

Overlord deck has 120 cards. These are the same cards as two basegame decks.
As mentioned before, the overlord expansion makes it easier to play because the deck is made for overlord. However, if you have two basegames you could make your own overlord deck.

Im glad to have the overlord deck, it plays much better Smile

The true question is whether there is additional value. I say, not for what you pay, that is unless you are going to be playing a LOT of Overlord Scenarios.
It seems as if you are having a good time with the game. I would simply try out using the two base game decks sorted together and play on the cheap. If you find that Overlord is going to be the main way you play in the future, then purchase the OVERLORD expansion when that becomes your preferred playing style. But save your money for now and enjoy the games you have. As most folks have alluded too, the primary benefit is simply in the card deck and not having to separate out the cards after some games.

However, when you think about the overlord deck, and new dice, I would say that makes it worth it!

To answer your question, YES it is necessary.

Like clexton27 said, it depends on how much you are going to play.

We play an overlord every Friday and tried the budget method of two base game sets. We ordered the overlord pack after dividing the cards three times. Enough was enough. And the extra dice are worth every penny.

We don't use the chits anymore. Will just proxy using other nationalities first. But we've been ordering Italeri and Revell 1/72 infantry figures, painting them, and using those slowly but surely.

We use infantry men too, a lot now were playing Early Russia. I found it very useful to mount the figures on bingo chits or small coins. Coins make them a lot more heavy which is nice for the German Stalingrad infantry.

As somebody who plays Overlord only occasionally, (i.e. when I can gather enough players), I actually found the dedicated deck that comes with the Overlord expansion extremely useful as a rules reminder/prompter for some of the more specific card plays.

So I find this deck REALLY helps when you have NOT been playing the Overlord version too regularly.

I know Overlord can still be played 2 player, so I would suggest buying the expansion even for playing 2 player Overlord, in my opinion it is well worth having that specifically designed deck.
