Looks like 9 teams have signed up so far. 12 would be a GREAT number. Any volunteers to form 3 more teams?

No Finland team?? No Canada? Even a 2nd USA team isn't out of the question if someone volunteers to captain it!

Well done, tjandjahall, great job settling the matter concerning World United. It is good to know that I can sit back and relax having you as tournament director. Thanks again.

Let's get back to business. Currently, we have 11 teams: 3 German teams, 2 French teams, USA, Belgium, Brazil, World United, Days of Wonder and the Netherlands (we are seven players now, by the way). I have some questions on the number of playing teams.

- Wernerus, staycool, Katzenfrau, Angel, and the ones I forgot: I know some of you are still on holiday, but can the ones that are not confirm if we will have an Austrian team?

- Burgos: Your team seems to be incomplete. I can't find Player139336 in the player list. Can you tell us if we still have a Brazilian team and, if we do, who will be on it?

- tjandjahall: I hope we will have twelve teams, but it looks like we will have eleven, meaning one team will not play each week. Will this team get a pro forma draw, or will it just have played one match less than the other teams?

- another question to tjandjahall: is it correct to assume the tournament will take exactly three months if we have 11-12 teams? (11 weeks round robin, semifinals, finals) Or should we have an additional week between the round robin and the semifinals?

Yes, I've mentioned this in the organisational thread.

I should point out that team captains will need to check that thread on a regular basis - at least every couple of days. Much of the organisation will be handled there.

Each round, one team will have a bye, scoring no clashes, no matches and no games. Each team will have had exactly one bye by the end of the round robin. Thus, it all works out and there is no need to worry about anybody having played less matches.

I am thinking that an extra week may be wise, if we can spare it, because the format switch means that it may not be immediately apparent what the draw will be for that coming round. However, I think we need to examine our calendars once the number of teams is finalised, to make sure the schedule fits properly with other events that might disturb things - like Christmas, which should be a few weeks after the end of the tournament, but we shall have to see.

Hi Bassie

we are currently putting an Austrian team together. Our Captain Angel6 is still on holiday and with a 90% probability he will register an Austrian Team on Sept 4th, shortly before the deadline.

Dont know whether we will call the team Mozart, Klammer , Schwarzenegger, Sissi ....... or just "The Unbeatables"?

So be prepared for hard matches (especially the Germans we want to beet, as usual ... Smile Smile )

I guess you got me wrong. Sorry, English is still not my first language. Embarassed

This was not what I meant. I know, of course, that in the end of the round robin the number of matches will be equal playing eleven teams. But, for instance, in a round robin at bridge, having an odd number of teams, a team with a bye gets 18 VPs (victory points) out of a maximum of 25. The reason for this is to make it easier to compare the top teams and not having to calculate the differences. Just a detail, your proposition is fine with me.

By the way, with maximum twelve teams, we can easily spare a week without getting close to the Christmas holidays.

Hi! I posted in the other thread that the Brazilian team won't participate, because we're lacking players. I entered in another team, as I don't want to be out of that tournament. Thanks!

Oh, so you were asking about how we work out the current standings? I hadn't really thought about it, and from my perspective it doesn't really make a lot of difference (because it doesn't have any real effect on the tournament. I would say that concerned parties can estimate the current standings using any method they like.

One school of thought would make the bye worth one point (where a won clash is worth two), two matches and ten games (the mean result of a clash). Since a top-placed team will be scoring more than that generally, you could estimate that they score, say, 2/3/15, to make a better comparison at the top.

But I hadn't intended to worry about current standings terribly much.

Another possible solution is to ignore the extra clashes, with the upside that you don't make up information and the downside that you don't take all the available information into account. I.E. you can't say anything after the first round. After each round the number of teams with an extra clash goes down until it ultimately falls to zero at the end of the contest, so this method gets more and more accurate with each round.

I would say the first method (giving average points to byes) is more accurate in the beginning of the tournament, when only a few teams played one clash less, and the second method (ignoring the extra clashes) is more accurate in the end, when only a few teams played one clash more. In the middle of the tournament, it's a matter of preference.

No finnish team. Rogue wasn't able to get the game work in his computer any more despite many efforts and I am quiting on-line playing, at least 2-player TtR with the strategy I use and for a while. I have been repeating same kind of playing for too long. Maybe I make some day a return as a ticket fiend Wink Lately I have been playing a lot in a gameclub and with my friends different kinf of games with real board and cards. For example a DoW game "Shadows over Camelot" I enjoy a lot in good company.

I wish all nation cup teams fun in games Smile

I am truly sad. I thought it would be me who got burnt out first. I will miss playing against you. I never minded your style. I hope you didn't let the jealous jerks who criticized you for it factor into your decision.

I am coming back to play the 2nd tournament games if the 4th round some day ends. I hope we meet then and can play together. You have been a great support to me in the tournament. Thank you for that.

You have given me the biggest challenge in games, I have enjoyed our every single game a lot. Actually the game I remember the best of all my games is one of our games. See you Smile

Hi White, I have enjoyed talking with you in the lobby and I am sure we meet there again Smile

Congrats for the first place and a great score. I have always hoped that when I am not well-ranked anymore, there are persons I like and appriciate in the top places. I am very happy to leave now.

Hi there,

hopefully, I am not too late, but right now there is an AUSTRIAN team:

-) ANGEL6 (captain)
-) WERNERUS
-) STAYCOOL
-) RAMTRAK
-) SAUVIGNON57
-) KATZENFRAU
-) ANGEL9

staycool, Wernerus and myself build the core of the team, planning to play every round.

ramtrak and sauvignon57 were aquired by staycool. (thanks for the help!)
They can not play always but should normally be able to fill the 4th spot.

Katzenfrau (wife of Wernerus) and Angel9 (wife of mine) will play if no other player is available.

Have fun everybody,

Michael aka Angel6 aka Angel345

You are supposed to post it in the organisational thread!

I hope Tjandjahall will allow your team to play. You're only 8 minutes too late...

I make it 52 minutes before time, actually, but in the wrong thread.

Angel6, I'll let your team play, but please post in the organisational thread ASAP. You will need to read that thread on a regular basis (even when no new posts are showing, because updates will be done via editing).

A reminder for all captains (just in case you haven't been keeping an eye on the organisational thread, which you should be reading regularly)... Your list of players for the second round is due by 23:00:00 GMT Wednesday Sept 7th, 2005. That's about 40 hours from now.

The reason that you need to get that list of players in early is so that you and your opponents can have the time required to organise your schedules and get the games in.
