Games like Small World? Wed, 21 January 2015 01:55
Was wondering what games people who like small world also enjoy? I tried Munchkin but it was too confusing for me (slow learner). Not opposed to iPad apps, either. I love playing Small World on the iPad. I wish more add ons were available on the iPad version! Thanks!!!

Small World has no peer! Very Happy

Honestly, if you like Small World make sure you play Ticket to Ride. It's a totally different game but very fun and easy to pick up. My personal favorite game all time is Memoir '44, another Days of Wonder title, but it's a bit more complicated.

I haven't found a Days of Wonder title that I didn't like! There are, of course, other good game companies but it depends on what you like in a game. DoW games always have a strong theme and amazing bits, which I love! Smile

I hope this helps.

It's difficult for me to think of another game quite like Smallworld, despite its core simplicity. The only thing that comes to mind is Terra Mystica, which I've played once. Its theme is very similar: players take various fantasy races and vie for control over a map (in Terra Mystica's case it's a hexagon grid).

As for how it plays, it felt like this weird hybrid of Smallworld and Settlers of Catan (I kid you not). The strangest part about it is that races must convert the land into preferred terrain types before expanding -- basically the fantasy equivalent of terraforming. The game has a lot less violent conflict than Smallworld and a whole lot of shouldering in and taking up space. Plus, you get VPs and production for building stuff, like Catan.

I'm not yet sure whether I like Terra Mystica, but I want to play it again to get a better feel for it. The rules are straightforward, but there are a lot of them. To the designers' credit, they had the clever idea of starting out with all your unplaced building pieces on a tableau in premarked spots. As you remove pieces and place them on the board, it uncovers icons which tell you what those buildings are now producing for you each turn.

Anyway, aside from mentioning Terra Mystica, I feel like I should ask whether you've heard of Vinci. Smallworld is basically an improved version of Vinci, which was a similar strategy game set in the historical real world. Apparently it had races but lacked special powers to create combos with, and the theme was very dry and generic. Philippe Keyaerts refined his idea, slapped a fresh new theme onto it with whimsical artwork, and turned it into Smallworld.

I'm not sure whether Vinci is still in print. I haven't played it, but it doesn't sound very interesting compared to Smallworld, so I'm not recommending that you hunt it down. However, you might be interested in just reading about it if you're curious about Smallworld's origins. Smile It was not published by Days of Wonder, but boardgamegeek.com has some info on it:

Here are in my opinion 4 games that looks like Small World:

1-Nexus ops: simple and really cool.

2- Chaos in the old world (combat, control of territory, asymmetry of races). Territory control is done both through the units but also through maps of devastation that are laid on the regions.

3- Olympos (control of territory and choice of tile power). The mechanics of time (at the horus heresy) is great.

4- Kemet (combat, control of territory, choice of tile power). A little harder to take in hand (some power seems very strong but it is a question of balance between the players that only comes after several games).

For 4 the rules are not very difficult.
