Memoir at 2019 World Boardgaming Championships Tue, 05 March 2019 21:40
.
The Memoir tournament at this summer's World Boardgaming Championships will be held Thursday-Friday, July 25-26.

WBC will again be held at Seven Springs Resort, near Pittsburgh, PA, USA. (Details at http://www.Boardgamers.org .)

The tournament will follow our usual schedule: Single elimination, with a Mulligan round the night before. Mulligan is 9pm Thursday evening, which follows an 8pm teaching demo. Main tournament all day Friday, beginning at 9am. If you lose in the Mulligan, you can re-enter with a clean slate in round 1 on Friday morning.

The tournament will use 6 scenarios from the new "NEW FLIGHT PLAN" expansion and the Bonus Scenarios set. They were selected with the help of Richard Borg.

Mulligan & Round 1 ... Green Devils at Vierville
Round 2 ... Le Dezert - Act I
Round 3 ... North of Oosterbeek
Round 4 ... Battle of La Heuniere
Round 5 ... Hill 170
Round 6 ... Cherkasskoye

If you have New Flight Plan, bring it -- along with any expansion that has Roads and Towns. (You can participate with just the base game. Paper terrain will be provided for those who need it.)

The new Air Rules are a part of this expansion: In the early rounds, if both players want to use Air Rules, they may. In rounds 5-6, Air Rules will be used.

Special rules for each scenarios will be taught at the beginning of the round, and help sheets will be available.

For info about New Flight Plan, see https://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?th=38601.

This is the largest face-to-face Memoir tournament in North America, and the winner earns the right to compete in the online Champions Trophy tournament.

Plus 5 Overlords

Overlords: In addition, we will have 5 Overlord games -- Thursday afternoon, Friday late-night, and Saturday all day. Commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, we're including scenarios from both of these.

> Thursday 2PM - Rzhev
> Friday 11PM - Firefight at Neffe
> Saturday 10AM - Canal de la Haute Colme + The Bourbourg-Brouckerque Line
> Saturday 2PM - Counterattack at Carentan 2 (by LooneyLlama)
> Saturday 7PM - D-Day Landings: Operation Neptune (Full 6 boards.)

Up-to-date information will be posted on this thread and also at http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/event/details/?id=1763

WBC features tournaments for more than 100 different games, such as Battle Cry, C&C Ancients, and C&C Napoleonics. The full convention will be July 20-28.

Also ... tournaments for DoW games Ticket to Ride, Small World, and Pirate's Cove.

I can't wait! I'm really looking forward to the D-Day maps. I've been wanting to play all six maps together for a long time! I'm sensing a bit of a late night on Saturday before the drive home on Sunday

I'm really not that far away... (I live in Exton - PA) however the schedule is kind of odd, I work Monday through Friday...

But I will see if I can get some days off or something...

The different games have their traditional "slots." Saturday is Battle Cry. Friday is Memoir (with a Mulligan round the night before). Thursday is CC:Ancients. Wednesday is Napoleonics.

Personally, I work Monday-Friday, too. I drive out Wednesday after work and arrive late at night.

Some people take the whole week off and play in a bunch of tournaments. (And there are even a few grognards who spend the entire week fighting a single battle in painstaking detail.)

This is my first time trying to join the tournament. How does the tournament work? Does the WBC provide the board game(s) for the tournament/overlord and instructions? Do i register for the tournament on Thursday (day I am planning to attend)?

Thanks for the help! Looking forward to this!

You can register at the WBC convention desk for the days that you want to attend. I would suggest that you register at least for Thursday (which is when the demo and the Mulligan round are held--as well as one of the Overlords) and Friday (which is when the main single elimination tournament is held). You might also want to register for Saturday (when there will be three Overlords).

It is not necessary to register separately for the Memoir '44 tournament (or any tournament, for that matter)--just show up at the time and place indicated.

If you have a copy of the base game, it would be a good idea to bring it. If you don't, there are usually enough copies available for everyone to play that wants to.

As for the Overlords, you do not need to bring anything--Sam and his assistant GM's provide all that is needed for those games.

If you follow the link that Sam gave in his original post, it will take you to the WBC website, where you can find links to the schedule for the whole 9 days of the convention. However, in brief, besides the schedule for the Overlords (given in Sam's post above), the Demo is on Thursday at 8:00 PM, the Mulligan Round on Thursday at 9:00 PM. On Friday, the first round is at 9:00 AM, with subsequent rounds beginning about every 2 hours. If you win the Mulligan round, you advance directly to the second round. If you lose (or do not play in) the Mulligan round, you get another chance (with the same scenario) in the first round.

The scenarios for this year's tournament are now listed in the first post on this thread. They are taken from New Flight Plan and the Bonus Scenarios set.

How does it work if I bring my copy of the game? Does it stay with me as long as I'm still alive in the tournament and then I can take it with me if/when I'm eliminated?

That is correct. You will either use your game or your opponents. If there are not enough games, usually the GM or AGMs will have extras that can be used (although I can't ever remember there not being enough copies). And when you are done, you take your game with you.

I'm looking forward to meeting you!

And there is something of an advantage to bringing one's own game--those with games get better tie-breaker numbers than those without.

I'm bringing both cards and tokens, but the planes are too delicate to bring by … plane! I guess I can borrow some other planes at the event location?

Two more days to get there … but first a visit to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas!

See you all pretty soon!

Yes, you'll be able to borrow planes if you need to.

Technically, all you need is the token, since it's always on its own hex. The planes just make it look so much more impressive.
