Differences from 1st ed to 2nd ed to 3rd ed? Mon, 26 August 2019 20:37
I searched the forum for an answer without success despite guessing it's there and I just couldn't find it. I have an offer to trade for Memoir '44 1st ed. What are the differences, if any, from the 1st to the latest 3rd ed? Are the changes sufficiently modest that a 1st ed. won't have issues with later expansions?

The only difference I can think of is that the dice are wooden (later editions have plastic dice) and the plastic used for the figures might be a little bit difference. Otherwise they will be exactly the same.

You won't have any issues using it with expansions that you get.

First edition is by far the most superior. The quality of the components are very good. The games were made in Germany.

The second edition was made with lower quality components in China. Some cards were not correct in first prints (Behind enemy lines. Bridges).

Third edition introduced plastic dice. They are higher quality because they do not have rounded corners and most gamers prefer them. I also think that the cards were corrected but I'm not sure. The third edition was also made in China.

Are the dice images going away after some play in the third edition? I have two base sets that are from the second edition. The oldest base set dice are pretty much white now.

Probably not since they're plastic

Yes, the original wooden dice were prone to having the painted images wear off. Many patrons suggested that you put a coat of clear lacquer on them when you first got them. So, if you still have a spare set laying around, you might want to give that a try.

Or you could paint them now to stop any more wear.

Or you could let them continue to wear off, and use them to show off how much experience in playing Memoir you got.

A vintage look and feel have a certain charm as well. And I'm proud of the fact that some of my games show that they have been played a lot.

Edit:
My memoir dice are like my wife. I like it how they show their age. I wouldn't want them to be covered in a coat of varnish or paint to look better or preserve better, and I most certainly wouldn't want to replace them with a newer plastic model.
