New Flight Plan - Luftwaffe Air Attack Thu, 26 March 2020 23:57
I just played this scenario today and had some interesting thoughts about it.
In the Historical Background it states:

the German Luftwaffe launched relentless and merciless air attacks on the armored columns strung out along the road

After attempting to play this scenario with just one aircraft for the Axis it was obvious that the air attacks would neither be relentless nor merciless as all the allies had to do was spread out. By the Allies spreading out the aircraft only got to attack one unit per turn. And when it came time for the single aircraft to rearm it gave them a free turn with no hassles, as on the turn the Axis retired they could not bring on another aircraft.

Needless to say this was not much fun and it was obvious the Russians would get off board while the lone aircraft simply pecked at one unit at a time.

So in order to try something different, which may have been what was originally intended but was not written in the rules, my friend and I decided that the Axis would be able to launch all their available aircraft.

In other words, the Axis could place all three types of aircraft (bomber, fighter-bomber, fighter) on the board simultaneously and hence create a relentless and merciless attack. The still had to use section cards and would use one Air Combat card per plane to bring them on.

In practice this worked great and the Russian columns suffered appropriately.
So the question now arises:

Was it the original intent of this scenario to allow simultaneous ordering of multiple aircraft?

Looking at the response so far I think nobody has played this scenario so far....
But i share my friends opinion.

In our game the Russians did not break the column so easily, but the game was a easy win for the Russians nonetheless. both ended 15-5.

I do not think the designer meant for it to be played with all the aircraft flying simultaneously. I think it was an experiment and a "funny" take on the airplanes by giving one side just an airplane.

Although I like your suggestion of trying it with the multiple aircraft it does not have enough appeal to me to replay the scenario.

We plan to continue to play through the NFP scenarios after Corona.

I used the scenario mainly as an introduction to how airplanes move and battle and how to defend against them. I played it with my kids a few times so we could figure out the mechanics, then moved on Smile

My son and I played this according to the rules and scenario. We did allow the Russian armor to move three hexes on the road. Not sure if the scenario allowed this or not - had to read between the lines. With three powerful air combat cards in hand the German fighter racked up five kills in the first two turns. However the remaining air CC's in hand were two spotting cards and a dogfight card -which could only be used to bring planes on board, not enhance firepower. I never drew a recon card until the end of the game and the Russians ended up with a lopsided win.

We played it a second time allowing the German player to bring on a plane immediately after he withdrew his plane. The only stipulation being was that it could not be the same plane. This resulted in a lopsided German victory as the German player was able to immediately take advantage of the air CC's at his disposal by quickly changing planes.

We decided that if we ever play this scenario again we would modify the scenario rules to allow for the bombing of the bridges, limit all Russian tank movement to a max of two hexes, and start the German player off with 8 air CC's.

Yeah it's a wacky scenario that can be wildly different from game to game. I love the idea but it seems like pure luck decides the winner.

I really suggest you try playing allowing the Axis to bring on ALL its aircraft. A much more satisfying and interesting play through.

Clexton is right makes it historical correct and much more fun.
