Will this idea ruin the game- pick out 2 cards before play- the murdered victim and the secret kille Thu, 05 June 2003 09:39
Just wondering if adding a bit of spice would ruin the game-
does this sound ok-

before the game pick one of the 24 monks and show everyone that
is the monk that was murdered. set him aside for the game.

Then play as usual and take another monk and put him face down
below the board as the guilty party.

This would remove 2 cards instead of 1..but everyone would know
the murdered monk is and i think it would be fun to see WHO was killed instead of an anamoprhic name.

What do you think?

Excellent idea, just make sure you adjust the number of cards left in the parlor at the start of the game in consequence, so that each player still has an identical number of suspect cards in their hands at the start of the game.

Actually a variant of this that may play better Cool would be to put the 2nd card (the victim) and put him face down either on the bridge outside the abbey or inside an unused cell. Each player could then look at the facedown card if they visited that space sometime during the game. Twisted Evil So the victim would be anonymous until the person went an examined the body.

I do like this idea by the way, thanks for the original post and idea !! (also the killer strikes again event is a great idea as well!)

Spunk,

We played this version on Saturday (5 players) and it worked well. Here's how we did it:

- As was suggested, we took one of the Parlatorium cards (1 of only dealt 4 in a 5-player game) and placed it face down on the bridge. This is the "victim" rather than Brother Adelmo.

- We favor the 1-3 space turn with the Mass bell starting on the 2 position, as this seems to move things along faster (9 moves per Mass round versus 8 ).

- After determining who starts with the Mass cards, the person to their LEFT starts ON the bridge, rather than in the chapel. They may look at the card but must leave it on the bridge face down. An alternate would be to have the person to the RIGHT get them. I don't know that there's excessive advantage either way, it's just the way we did it.

- Game play continues as usual, but now the bridge is an additional destination to visit. All questions, etc. occur as if it is another room.

All in all, it went well. Some folks seem perpetually frustrated by the lack of cards moving around, particularly when the person to their right passes them cards they've already seen. Again, the 5 players, combined with the 1-3 space turn may actually make that worse, as people tend to ask fewer questions and tend to want to rifle through people's rooms instead.

Two considerations:

1) I don't like the bridge as a place for the victim, because it favors the visit to the Green Cell, being an unfair disadvantage for the Green player (unless you're using all colors excpet green, maybe).
I would prefer the "southern Claustrum" (i.e. the space near the Capitulum) because Capitulum is a location less visited than Parlatorium and Scriptorium, and this would be a way to "raise its value".

2) The "3 spaces per move" rule DOES greatly favor visiting rooms, while with only 2 spaces you must spend about half of the time in a "neutral" zone (Claustrum, etc.) and thus you favor spaces with other people so "I can question him, at least".

Luke,

I agree. I think the 3 move/3 round Mass option DOES cheat you from asking questions, and I'm going to recommend to our regular crew that we go back to the 2/4 approach and ask TONS of questions.

A symptom of this is the fact that we've NEVER had a vow of silence taken in a 3/3 game, as people are DESPERATE to ask and be asked questions. Slowing down the move distance will certainly fix that.

Maybe the green player starts on the bridge? Perhaps he heard something out his window? Smile

I'm cool with the south Claustrum idea, though.
