Hello all

I have to explain about all that I said at the beginning of that week.

I was totally upset, for many reasons.
Please accept my apology ( especially Zug and rek, I was really not kind ...)

Many players told me I'm wrong, not to want to be in the tournament.
I couldn't hear them because I was too much irritated.

But now, if rek accepts to forgive me for what I said and as I've got rid of one of the reaons why I didn't want to be in , I'll be in !!!!!!

rek Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes do you want me to play ? Embarassed Embarassed

and If you want, I can post on the french forum, tell me !

there are not many french at the top, but I know rather well some of them, I can try to make them participate

One other possibility for players with a slightly lower rank would be to play an extra round - for example if you had 36 players the top 28 are automatically in the main round, and the last 8 have an extra round to play off for the last 4 spots. Just a thought.

good good idea. Everyone would be satisfied and FREE to play Wink!

Looks like the "qualifications" scheme in Rolland Garros tournament, so it must be good ! Smile

I totally agree with Lea, an OPEN tournament would be something way more interesting ! (and at least, I could try to participate...)

A player that hopes to see the "rules" to change one day. Rolling Eyes

Hi vinz,

If you'd really like to participate, why don't you write to rek and ask to be signed up? Instead you post something, that looks pretty judging to the tournament (my French is not very good), avoiding the discussion with chosing another language.

If an open tournament would be more interesting, why don't you organize one that satisfies your needs? There are two groups of people. Those who do something and those who criticize the first group. Where do you belong?

Hi all

REK - great idea organizing a 2nd tournament.

I'd like to join in. Smile

There is one thing you should know up front:
I am currently pregnant and the Baby is due in June... I hope to be able to play all games, but can't guarantee right now. If you therefore decide I shouldn't participate in this tournament, please let me know.

Otherwise I'm looking forward to the tournamet.

Great! I was just about to sart a new thread to see if there would be interest in an tournament for "us mere mortals" Wink

I was thinking about a restricted tournament, let's say for players with ranks between 1500 and 3000, but a completely open tounament sounds like great fun too!

Now I think I'll just wait, and first get my ass kicked in the open tournament, and after that I might reconsider the restricted tournament.

On the other hand as I don't read the German nor the French forums (my German is really rusty and my French is practically nonexistent Sad ) I have no idea if something like a restricted tournament for "non top" players already might have been realised. If it has it would be nice to hear about it, but this all is getting really of topic. Maybe we should start a new thread to discuss tournaments in general.

hi!
Well, yes I have given my opinion about the tournament. That was an opinion.
I don't want the people who organize this 2nd tournament to change things right away, just they take note of what might be the feelings of others. I know it is hard to organize things, this is why I didn't want to insist and ask special permission.

Now, yes, what have been called "democratic tournament" will indeed exist.
I have to admit the organisation of this OPEN has started in the french forum for convenience (well, language convenience...), but a lot people have joined in based on discussion that took place in the lobby.

Hope all of this answer to your last question, and really hope to see you join us.

I don't want to interfere more with this post, so if you're interested (and I took your answer to Lea as a "yes"), please follow-up in the "open tournament" discussion (french & english forum).

Regards.

Ok, I hope I haven't missed anybody who's asked to join the tournament. So far we have 23 people. If anyone else wants to join please say so now. If you are on the list and don't want to play now would be a good time to say so.

The tournament will start on June 1, and each round will be approximately a week. We'll do our best to accomodate anyone who has holiday plans and such but interest will die if the rounds take too long.

I'm insterested in signing up if I can. I'm both below 1600 and with less than 100 games under the belt so it's up to rek if I can get in. Definitely not a top100 player, more like a top1000. But I remember reading you'd accept lower players after the big shots got a chance to sign up and it seems there is room left if you need 32 players so I'll be happy to fill in.

I'm already signed up for the open tournie so this one could serve as practice grounds. For the one round that I'll last, I guess. Hey, that's still 4 games against a good player, hopefully I can learn something.

No problem if I can't get in.

I'm in? I'M IN! Thanks Rek! Very Happy
Yes, unfortunately I've been kicked out of the top 200 due to those Revalidation Matches (it's not easy riding your trains when you're on crutches, you know!), even though I defeated Léachris (again) and Thaddäus and had great matches against El Soyokaze and Osamu (which I lost only just). I've also been experimenting with new invented tactics, which also cost me some matches.
But by the time this tournament starts I hope to be back in the top and live up to everybody's expectations!

Just a few minutes ago I finally had my long awaited match against the evil Rek! And... aaarrgh!!! Lost with a difference of just one lousy point! Mad

Peter de Zeeuw (120) vs. Rek{} (121)

Impressive! You did better against him than I usually do. I spend my evenings mowing Rek's yard and doing other various chores around the ranch... because Rek OWNS me... Laughing

As to your rank going down: I saw you playing a 4 person match yesterday. It is possible to maintain a high rating playing those matches, but IMO it's much more difficult. The reason is luck and unintended consequences. People can hurt you too easily just doing their thing, and you have less control over your destiny. I would suggest you stick to mano vs mano... Just my 2 cents.

Best,
SKM

A very close game. Peter played a ticket fiend strategy and almost pulled it off, he drew LA-NY which he already had completed. I give him credit for recognizing that his best hope was to get some lucky draws -- you might sneak an upset win (or close call) now and again playing that way but it won't get you into the top 50. So if there are 24 players instead of 32, are we playing the way pcrams wrote? 16 last players playing from 8 last places?

Or 24 --> 12 --> 6 --> 3 and then the last three play each others to see who gets the most wins.. or something else like that.

Pilke, when I finalize the list I'll figure out what the best format is. A bye for the top players in the first round might be the best way to go. Does anyone has a preference for how this should work?

Thank you very much rek, I might be a little busy till like june 2nd or 3rd, but I'll arrange the meetings with whomever I play. I like the idea of byes for the tops. I'd like to see this tourney be double elimination if possible. That would definitely complicate the brackets though, so we'll have to check it out. and rek, just tell me if you need any help that i might be able to provide.

Hi Rek,

I think it would be nice for everyone to have at least a couple of games to play for sure.(at least it would be nice for me)

For 24 players I would like the most 8 groups of 3 players (maybe one top 10 player in every group?!), everyone playing 4 (or 3) games against both other members of the same group, so everyone gets 8 (or 6) games for sure.

Then, the 2 best players of every group advance to the 1/8 final, where always one group winner plays a runner-up of another group.

From the quater-finals on I would like to play best of 9 games or even more, just to "have fun with other top 10 players", if I make it that far.

I don't know about everybody else but I would find it quite inappropriate to change the rules of the tournament this far in the process. A lot of people signed up with the knowledge that this would be a direct elimination tournament, and so it should be.

This is without being judgemental on any other tournament system. Sure there are better ways, and I would enjoy playing more than one match (given my skills that's probably all I'll get). But it's simply a matter of correctness to stay with the initial plan. Byes for highest ranked players are the way to go, no doubt.

To avoid byes, encourage more lowrankers to sign up. How ironic that people complained about the tournament being "private" and now that basically everyone could join, the 5 to 10 available spots remain empty.

I think redPEPPER made a good point, my "group round" idea probably comes too late.

For myself I wouldn't want to get a bye, because as you can see in my history, I haven't played much this year and really need some "warming up".

That's great! We'll have almost all of the top ten now.

That shouldn't be a problem if you can get your games in within a few days after that time. I'm a bit behind in organizing so we might start a day or two late anyway.

I think that, if we accept unfair games, there will be others who do that too. So I won't accept that Wernerus is 2nd when the playing partners of the tournament are selected. At least me, osamu, Angel6 and Womble would be in front of him, if he hadn't used padded account. I am sure that the account katzenfrau, would be very, very low ranked if it only had the games of the 11-year old daughter (not the games of mother, wernerus and angel6). Wernerus has gotten a lot of points with that unfair playing. With this I don't mean that wernerus couldn't get himself ranked 2nd. But I think he has to do the work like the rest of us. I hope that you wernerus have manners to ask your score dropped. You will get it up back soon.

So I won't accept unfair playing. And I won't play in the tournament if you wernerus are in second position, when the playing partners are chosen.

But I will enjoy the following of the tournament and hope good luck to you, my playing friends! I will be a happy watching the games of you, my internetfriends Smile

Now, I'm struggling with my English for two days.
Sadly, the 'real' players seam to post on the English forum mainly Crying or Very Sad .

In return, I'd like to teach you the very important german (but only known by bridge players from Vienna) expression "Wedlbetonierer".

In bridge, "Wedl" is a slang expression for a weak player,
a "Betonierer" is (not in bridge) sombody who builds something out of concrete,
and "Wedlbetonierer" is somebody specialised in beating weak players - and beat them smashingly. Very Happy

I always play T2R against random opponents, just stepping into 2-player games without knowing the other player at all.
Yesterday, I had a look at my last 40 opponents, and most of them really have a low ranking. There where only 3 Top 100 players (I won against them) and no Top 10 player.

So, obviously I am a "Wedlbetonierer", which probably is not the best pre-requisite for playing a tournament of 'superstars'. Crying or Very Sad

But frankly, I am impatient and can't wait to take on this challenge. Cool

Pilke don't drop out. If these people really aren't any good they will lose early. I'm willing to bet they'll be out before you would get to play them. And I think you will be there as you are the best player, and hardest to get longest train from, that I have played here.
