  All aboard for Ticket to Ride Rails & Sails! Tue, 21 June 2016 15:03
Discover the next installment in our famous train game series: Ticket to Ride: Rails & Sails! Including a massive two-sided board featuring the World map on one side and the Great Lakes of North America map on the other, this version will enable you to set sails to new horizons thanks to the new ship routes.

With the new Train and Ship cards, you will be able to claim the routes on the map, and also use them to build harbors and maximize your score. Double-Ship cards are included to quickly cross seas and lakes. Last, but not least, a new type of ticket appears: the Tour tickets, listing between three and five cities, that must be connected together at all costs, and rewarded with many victory points.

It also includes 165 Plastic Trains, 250 Plastic Ships, 15 Harbors, 5 Scoring Markers, 140 Travel Cards (Train, Ship, Double Ship and Wild) and 120 Ticket Cards (65 for the World map and 55 for the Great Lakes map). I'll probably end up buying it in the end, but judging from these rather low quality pictures, then you've got a lot of refining to do. The Great Lakes map looks like a mix of only 2 colors (blue and green) without much detail at all. Previous maps has come with a much higher quality than this, and if you're going to charge €70, then one should expect a considerably higher quality.

The map is done and won't be refined further, but you might enjoy this higher quality image to see the beautiful map: https://boardgamegeek.com/image/3066874/ticket-ride-rails-sa ils?size=original

Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing those high-resolution images. Upon inspecting them, I find the world map up-to-par with prior installments art wise, but I still have problem with the Great Lakes map. In particular, the bear north-east of Sault St. Marie looks awfully pasted into the picture. The artwork on the sides, on the other hand, looks very beautiful.

But yeah, like I said, I'll most probably end up buying it anyway Wink

Just FYI, "Perry Sound" is incorrectly spelled. It should be "Parry Sound".

They could have given those islands between South Africa and Australia their name : the Desolation Islands

After reading the rules to find out how sea routes were incorporated into the game, I was left with confusion about a different mechanic altogether. The new 'Pair Routes' spaces mechanic is in sore need of either clarification, a few examples, or both.

From the rules:
"To place a train on a “Pair” space, you need two Train cards of the same color instead of one (you can use any color, and you do not have to use the same color for all spaces in the route)."

Let's take the example of the 3-train route [all pair spaces] from Lahore to Tehran. After reading the rules, I am completely unsure what set of train cards will complete this route.

We know that we have to have 3 matching train cards, but the pair spaces need two cards of the same color, but not the same color.

Does this mean I need 3 of color A and 3 of color B? Or 2 each of colors A, B, and C; wherein any of the three may match another?

I think any of the following will work [ignoring wilds for the moment]:
* 2 Red, 2 White, 2 Blue
* 6 Red
* 2 Red, 4 White

While the following will not work:
* 3 Red, 3 White
* 1 each of 6 colors
* any set of 6 cards where there is an odd number of cards of any color[s]

For such a different mechanic, it seems odd that no examples and only ~20 words were used. I would expect this rule to be interpreted in lots of different ways by different people. Players will be turned away in the moment that they try to claim the route, which will be a negative play experience.

I think you talked yourself through it pretty well! Smile

We tried to make sure the rules were as clear as possible but of course, like you have said, there are always ways to make things more clear.

Our hope is always that players have fun with the game, so if someone played the rule slightly wrong it's not going to ruin the game. Fun is the goal!!

We don't usually do pre-orders at conventions, but come on by and check in with us at GenCon! We would love to see you even if we can't do a pre-order and we can chat about board games!!

I purchased this at GenCon for as a present. I've played many of the other version and bought this untried. We really like this version of the game. That said, the Great Lakes tickets are very poorly printed. The map background is very difficult to make out, even when they try to 'highlight' the regions where the route ends. The World ticket map background is slightly better but still of mediocre quality.

We jumped right in and started playing. It's was really easy to pick up already knowing the basic Ticket to Ride rules. We did miss a detail or too, but still have had a lot of fun. Also, after playing Great Lakes three times we've found that five players is very challenging. It seems like the fifth player really can mess up routes for everyone. I think I'm going to try to limit the Great Lakes side to just four players.

So, after playing this for the first time, we came to an issue with the game end rule. Does game end trigger when you have gone through 54 pieces or when you are down to 6 or less of one type? Thank you in advanced for any help.

My take is that the end-game rule kicks-in when one player has used 54 pieces and has six or less total pieces left.
