The Germans executed a successful delaying action that saw much of Venray fall to the British but not before several Wehrmacht units escaped to Venlo. Help came from a surprising source: the Luftwaffe overcame the Allied air superiority to provide much needed ground interdiction that limited the ability of the British to close off the escape road. After two units exited the map, Germany took a 5-1 medal lead, and with another unit one turn away from exiting, the battle appeared over. British infantry, however, managed to capture the church objective on their next turn to extend the contest. The Germans exited their third unit on Turn 5, and won on the following turn when a combined armor, artillery, and fighter-bomber attack eliminated a three-figure British infantry unit in front of Venray. |
