The battle of Ortona proved very much to be a Stalingrad in miniature, with the Canadians nearly capturing the town only to be dealt a bloody defeat. With the supported infantry guarding their flank across the stream, the Canadian infantry slowly entered Ortona from the south. By Turn 7, half of the town was in Allied hands. But an ensuing TFH knocked the Canadians back and returned Ortano to the Axis. The rest of the battle saw both sides sparring for control of the prized town. Sitting on five medals, the Germans were on the brink of victory after 11 turns after reducing to one figure a Canadian infantry trying to reinforce the beleaguered Ortona garrison. The initiative was lost, however, when a Medics & Mechanics card replenished the weakened unit and a particularly effective Firefight card on the following turn evened the score at three apiece. Germany prevailed in the end when its combination of infantry and mortar firepower proved too much for the Canadians dug in at Ortona. The Allied loss was costly: 25 Canadian figures were eliminated to only 14 suffered by the Germans. |
rematch, very similar to the first one, but the Allies advanced very methodically, including their artillery units and let the Axis without any chance for counterattack. 4 Allied infantry unit entered Ortona in full strength and the Allied Right flank was completly cleaned from the Germans. Some fighting on the Allied Left with some Allied losses. The result of the game was clear from the beginning - no chance for the Germans. |
