FALL GELB - GRANDE CAMPAGNE

Fall Gelb Grand Campaign. Game 3 of Airborne Operation. The Dutch cleared their left flank of German units early on and rode the momentum gained there to a hard-fought victory. To counter the threat on its right, Germany attempted diversionary attacks on its left, but the Dutch army continued to close in on the airfield. With the noose tightening, Germany desperately needed air cover to support its perimeter defense. The Luftwaffe sorties, however, proved to be infrequent and ineffective. Left largely on their own, the surrounded paratroopers eventually yielded the airfield to an armor close assault. Victory Point totals (including Objective Points): Germany 11, Allies 12.

Great tense match up. The elite ability of the Germans made up for the fewer units. Initially the Germans pushed out from the airfield to take good cover and repel any Dutch advance. They moved toward Leiden and made good headway, eliminating one unit and getting another down to 1 unit, but then the Dutch brought reinforcements from across the river and made it close in that sector. The Dutch pushed forward in the center and made good use of the artillery, picking apart units in either the forest or on the airfield itself. At one point two single figure Dutch units with armor support moved toward the airport to pull in the defenders. It worked and although the Dutch forces were eliminated, the Germans were depleted as well to the point where they had three one-figure units holding the airfield. These were eliminated and on the final play the Dutch snuck behind enemy lines, captured the airfield and then eliminated the last single-figure German unit. It was close right up until the end. The Allies had a few units with only one figure.
German losses: 20 infantry figs, and the airfield.

WBC, Round 2, game 2.
Any time the Germans can start this scenario with an Assault Center (8 units), followed by Assault Left (5 units) and DHQ, things are bound to go pretty well. Those three cards cleaned out the forest on my near right, as well as two infantries on my far left, though I lost a pair of infantries on my left.
By now, I seemed to be accumulating Attack Centers. The third of those bagged me two infantries in front of the arty emplacement, though I lost a unit of my own.

WBC, Round 2, game 1.
My goodness, Firejet -- I didn't realize that was you!
The Germans started off by fairly well handing me my head, in the form of a 1-1-1, Infantry Assault (6 in the center), 2-0-2, and Move Out. When the 4th-turn dust had settled, I had lost my infantry in the forward forest and two more on my left flank. This was going poorly.
However, I then was able to mount an offensive on my right, with an Assault, Attack, and Probe, as well as a Barrage in the midst of that, for two kills.
The Germans began coming down my left flank in search of another kill, but I moved my artillery onth the left-center crease, and though I did lose another infantry on the left, he took two German infantries along with him.
Tied 4-4, I followed with an Infantry Assault on my right. While one of my units took the airfield, the other two finished off one last kill.

The fighting was heavy on the German left and by the end of German turn 3 the score was 2 to 2 with both sides losing infantry units.
The battle continued on the German left and then shifted to the center. The fighting went back and forth and was a very near run thing but my BARRAGE was able to finish off a 2 fig center French infantry.

After an early German BARRAGE only got 1 hit on a center infantry I played INF ASSAULT and killed a center infantry. TFH picked off a center infantry in return.
I then used MOVE OUT and my AMBUSH helped kill off 2 more units. A few turns later I played INF ASSAULT again and eliminated another infantry to make it 4 to 1.
The German fire was ineffective for the rest of the game and I was able to finish off an infantry in the center and another on my right to end things.

Game 4 of a live Vassal FALL GELB GRAND CAMPAIGN - AIRBORNE OPERATIONS - Game # 3
My VE rolls were ARM -- STR -- INF -- FLG while Johan rolled STR -- INF. So we would both draw one less card to start with.
Johan brought on an armor unit in the center with his Reserve rolls while I placed an infantry unit in my reserve Area.
I had decided to shy away from the Allied right and try and take out the Allied infantry in the center and on my right. I attacked in the center early and used my AS card to bring on a plane which hit both the center arty and tank. One of my infantry was hit with AMBUSH and so my attack vs the Allied center infantry in the woods on my baseline did not go as planned.
The battle in the center and German right / Allied left went back and forth till a 3 to 3 tie was seen -- I having killed off the center tank and two infantry while losing three infantry myself. The Allied infantry in the center had proved to be very troublesome -- I missed it and it ended up killing off one of my weak units.
I also rolled 3 dice vs the 1 fig center arty and rolled a flag which took it away from a second 3d attack from another of my CLOSE ASSAULT ordered infantry. But my FIREFIGHT killed off the arty and I went up 4 to 3.
I would lose another infantry.
Then a key turn for me as my infantry from my reserve area entered the battle and assisted in killing off another Allied infantry.
After an Allied BARRAGE only got 1 hit on a center 2 fig infantry I had few options with three right cards where I had no units.. I had M & M which I could use on that 1 fig infantry but it could only get into position to fire 1 shot as the enemy. My last choice was to play my other AS card (which I had drawn earlier) and try and finish off the 1 fig tank which my plane had hit on the turn before. I went for it and my plane came through and the tank went up in flames.

FALL GELB GRAND CAMPAIGN
Having won UNTERNEHMEN NIWI ( Game # 2) I got a free RT so that now I have two of them.
Airborne Operations - - Game # 3
My 4 VE rolls INF GRE STR STR killed off 2 infantry figs and saw the Germans only draw 3 cards. Johan rolled INF ARM so I lost and infantry and tank fig.
My Res Rolls were STR ARM and I used a RT to place an Elite Tank in the center but Johan rolled the same and placed his Elite Panzer on his left -- I knew the presence of this panzer unit meant trouble.
Both players are now down to 1 RT.
The initial battles were on my right - Ger left and in the center near the German baseline as my lone infantry fought from the woods.
The panzer long with the paras quickly killed off my infantry with no retreat in the open by Wassenaar. The German offensive would go on the eliminate the infantry in the town and my tank which was still on the baseline. I charged my lone infantry left on that flank which had only 3 figs and attacked the now 3 fig panzer and got 2 hits. My infantry then survived 7 from the panzers ARMOR ASSAULT including 3 while on the my baseline. My now 1 fig infantry the killed off the panzer before dying itself. I was lucky to have gotten one kill on my right.
In the center an early German plane interdicted my elite tank 2 turns in a row so that unit could not help out. My lone center infantry on the German baseline was killed off but not before taking out a Ger Para.
Later my tank would advance towards the Airfield and another German Para would die.
A second German plane came onto the board on my left but I used INFANTRY ASSAULT to move my 4 infantry there away from the plane. The plane would strafe for another turn then leave the battle field.
Johan charged one of his center infantry onto the bridge near Oude Rijn but my TFH ordered units killed it off and it was a 4 to 5 game.
Johan pulled back a 1 fig Para into the center - left woods hex out of arty range but not far enough away from my tank.
With the Airfield hex open I moved one of my infantry into it and my tank advanced and picked off the 1 fig infanty in the woods.

Gene plays DIG IN and places sandbags on his units on and around the airfield. Soon there are battles going on near Wassenaar and the woods near Leiden. In the fighting near Wassenaar both sides lose an infantry unit.
The fighting then shifts back to the woods on the German baseline between Leiden and the airfield and gene takes a 3 to 2 lead. I even the game by picking off a 1 fig inf in the woods but then lose a 3 fig infantry in the same woods hex. My ARTY BOMBARD kills off the 2 fig infantry on the airfield hex and the game is tied again – this time at 4.
Two German infantry fail to hit my tanks near Wassenaar -- they only manage to flag it to safer ground in the woods.
My BARRAGE then picks off a 2 fig infantry on the baseline and I now lead 5 to 4. The lone center German 3 fig para then charges my infantry within 2 hexes of the airfield medal and gets 2 hits.
But my follow up infantry -- arty attack kills off that unit to secure the 6 to 5 win.

Game # 1 of a PBEM Vassal Match started on 4/17/11
I had drawn three ASSAULT cards -- one each for the left, center and right. My plan was simple. Push my units to my right (which would avoid the tank) and try and wipe out the 6 Allied units in the center and my right. After a few turns my plan seems to be working and I wipe out the Allied infantry in Leiden along with another infantry and have reduced the infantry by the arty to 1 fig.
The Allied tank finally gets rolling forward but has nothing to fire at. I then have to modify my plan as I have run out of cards to order my infantry on my right. My CENTER ASSAULT sees me push 5 infantry into my left. I finish off a 1 fig infantry in the center.
The battle then rages near Wassenaar and the Allies seem to get the upper hand as they reduce two of my infantry to 1 fig each.
But I play my LEFT ASSAULT killing off two infantry and reducing the tank to 1 fig. This gives me a 5 to 0 lead.
An ARMOR ASSAULT kills off one of my infantry and I then fail to kill off the tank with 3 shots although my attacking infantry does recover 3 figs from the M & M card.
I lose a center 1 fig infantry to a 3d arty attack. My CLOSE ASSAULT then kills off the tank for the 6 (24) to 2 (18) win.

I started off with 1 Air Sortie and 2 Recon 1 cards, so I knew I would be able to pull some air action.
Before the scenario, I had used one of my victory rolls to remove one of his artillery figures. Then, with my Air Sortie, I strafed his infantry and artillery, getting lucky hits, and finishing his artillery, while leaving my Me109 on safe ground, but I lost him on the next turn with no cards for that section.
Soon, I brought in another plane to strafe his tanks, reducing them to 1 fig.
He was pummeling one of my infantry units on the left. With 1 fig left, I brought in a Storch to rescue him. Whew.
With continued attacks, especially from his elite unit (reinforcement), he took out 2 of my infantry units.
Using my inf unit (reinforcement) in the ALF corner city, I attacked the adjacent city until that unit was destroyed.
After he had taken out my inf unit that was protecting the objective medal, I had 2 center units attack his elite force, reducing it from 3 figs to dead. 4 to 2.
Adam triple-teamed my infantry guarding the objective medal, finishing them off and taking ground to grab the medal. 4 to 4.
I used TFH to strike back, destroying his unit on the air field, putting the medal back. 5 to 3.
He came back again to grab the medal, and also finished off one of my infantry units with his armor unit. 5 to 5.
I launched a final attack against his 1-fig armor, and hit with a single tank on the dice. 6 to 5 - a German victory.

Big card problems for me, as I used up my two Center cards within the first three turns, and didn't draw my next Center card until after turn 13. (And it was my opponent who kept getting the Infantry Assaults and Move Out.
Fortunately, by the time I was holding a hand full of Right cards in the second half of the game (plus a Left, where I had no surviving units), he was full of Lefts.
Finally, with the score tied 4-4, I was able to send a plane and one infantry to my Right with a 1-1-1, where they chased down one Allied infantry. Two turns later, with an Attack Center, I trapped and eliminated a full-strength infantry in the Center town.

The Germans Barraged my artillery on the first turn, and eliminated it on the second. For an encore, an Allied TFH with 5 orders killed two of my Center infantries, and then a 2-0-2 extinguished one at the far right.

Starting the game with an Assault Center and Assault Left from my hand, I moved a total of 14 units on my first two turns, killing two infantries on my left. I followed that by eliminating an infantry from the woods on my side of the center the next turn. but thanks to a pair of Allied triple-hits, I lost two infantries on my left.
On turn 5, my newly-drawn Move Out killed an infantry on each flank. At that point, with an Allied Assault Center, their tank rolled another triple-hit, knocking out a 3-figure infantry of mine.
Still, with a 5-3 lead, I was feeling good. I Barraged the infantry in Oude Rijn, scoring two hits and flagging it out of the town. An Allied TFH rolled 4 orders, and took the airfield, but no kills. The 2-figure infantry retreated behind the forest.
My Assault Right and Air Sortie strafed the fugitive infantry down to 1 figure. Enemy artillery reduced one of my pursuing infantries to 1 figure. I had a choice: Play a Recon and have a full-strength infantry roll 3d against the Allied 1-fig, or hedge against the possibility of a miss by ordering Medics for my own 1-fig. I ordered the Medics ... and instead of healing the patient, they gave him a fatal infection. No figures. The Allies killed him on the next turn to earn a victory.
9 turns, 5-6 medals, but I scored more hits, 24-21. That was "the one that got away."

German spent the Dig-In card in the early turn and drew 2 after reduced by the Allies VE roll. Allies played Probe Right and retreated two infantries to the back for safety reason. German Barrage incredibly took out the only Allies armor at the backrow and this greatly crippled the Allies offensive power.
However, Allies early VE roll put the German in a tough position after three infantries were down to 3-fig, and a Move Out that supposed to surround an infantry was proved uneffective as too many flags rolled him backward.
Another Move Out still got no significant improvement for the German as the Allies put a big Firefight card and again, reduced several infantries to a weakened state. German's risky move reduced the Leiden defender to 1-fig, but in the next turn, that two offenders were eliminated.
German's Pincer coupled with Air Sortie eventually took that defender out and also another one at Wassenaar to gain the lead by 3-2. German DHQ ordered 4 units, including a Me-109, but it failed the aircheck and was shot down. Luckily, the German succesfully took out two units at once to led further by 5-3.
Allies struggled with center card as they decided not to take the objective and killed a 1-fig infantry, but German's Attack Left was enough to end the 10-turns game after a 3-fig infantry was taken out.
