As the Belgians counterattacked on both flanks, they managed to stall our advance, but only just.

FALL GELB - GRANDE CAMPAGNE

Fall Gelb Grand Campaign. Game 2 of Airborne Operation. After the shocking losses at Bodange and Eben-Emael, the Allies served notice that the battle for the West was far from over. Two frontline German units were eliminated before a steady series of advances on the right flank led to the capture of Leglise by the Belgian army. The collapse of their left flank compelled the Germans to beat a retreat to Witry and Nives, but without the anticipated breakthrough by the armor, the German paratroopers could not hold on. The path to France would not be easy. Victory Point totals (including Objective Points): Germany 8, Allies 5.

Very much one way, the Germans lost two infantry on the left flank, and one on the left, plus nives and witry, with leglise being defenceless as well. It was all over in 4 moves with the Allies having two armour assaults!

Wow, what a difference the blitz rule / air power / recon card made this time. The allies lost 8!! Units in ten first two turns. Because they can\\\'t retreat they are sitting ducks for the German planes. This softened the Belgians up enough so that when they advanced the German infantry were able to take apart the units. I made some tactical retreats to get better massing of my fire power and this helped. When the armor came in it was all but over. They were able to quickly mop up some allied infantry in the open. This time the allied left flank was used extensively due to the cards they drew. The Germans need to get out of the poorly placed sandbags and take better cover.
German losses: 11 infantry figs, 1 tank, no objectives lost
Allied losses: 21 infantry figs, 5 tanks (2 depleted)

Allies captured 2 objectives. Allied right and center were again strong for them, systematically moving up. I took armor with a reserve roll which was able to take out an infantry but they had too many units distributed across the board and could make use of most cards. At the end I realized that I had forgotten about the blitz rules allowing the Germans to air strike the allied massed units in the back with a recon card. That might make a difference with the depleted units. Still can't get the armor into play.
German losses: 16 infantry figs and 1 yank (from reserves)
Allied losses: 9 infantry, 1 depleted tank, 4(!) infantry removed in victory rolls

Belgians seem to be able to take care of themselves just fine. Most of the action happened on the right flank and center. The Belgians methodically moved units forward and concentrated fire on individual German units until they broke or were eliminated. For the Germans it was difficult to form good fire groups because there are not that many units. The did not take advantage of their numbers on their right flank and when the Allies had units lose figures it was easy for them to pull back with the terrain. The key for the Axis I think is to group units based on cards and then get the three Allied units killed to bring in the armor. Unfortunately for the Germans they were nowhere near doing that. The Allies concentrated on the right flank and the one objective they won was Leglise.

The Belgians made a strong attack up the right flank and contested with the two defending Germans plus a reserve elite infantry, with both sides digging in for a protracted seige. However, those units, plus the medal from the town and one other lead to a conclusive allied win.

Game 3 of a live Vassal FALL GELB GRAND CAMPAIGN - AIRBORNE OPERATIONS - Game # 2
Johan lost 1 infantry figure for my victory in the last scenario and another for my VE rolls -- along with a tank figure while I lose an infantry fig. Johan rolls two INF for his Reserve Rolls but opts not to take any reserves. I use two RTs to bring on a panzer and infantry and place them on my left.
On my first turn I bring on a plane on my right and hit the French infantry and tank there. The Allies advance in the center and do some damage but my FIREFIGHT picks off the two Belgium tank units that came forward.
I then use M & M to recover 3 hits to my forward center sandbag infantry.
A few turns later a plane picks off the French armor and my panzer advances to the center woods while I pull back a 1 fig infantry to the woods behind Leglise.
I then bring on a plane on my left and kill off the last Belgium tank but forgot killing all 3 gives me a medal -- so the game would go no longer than it should have.
The battle then shifts to the center with me using AMBUSH and then a panzer attack killing off a 1 fig infantry.
The Allies occupy Legilse but my three infantry attack wipes it out and I lead 3 to 0. My two panzers also come on in the passes.
An Allied INFANTRY ASSAULT cuts off my center forward panzer and eliminates it. I also lose my center sandbag infantry.
My ARMOR ASSAULT sees both panzer rushing forward -- getting 1 hit on an infantry in a town hex and killing off a 1 fig center infantry and getting 2 hits with its OR attack vs another.
A turn later my BARRAGE would kill off the 2 fig infantry giving me the 5 to 2 win. O
nce again the planes would prove to be useful and my two Reserve units helped me to take back Leglise and repulse the allied center attack. Without them my reinforcing panzers may have come on a turn or two late.

Game 3 of a live Vassal FALL GELB GRAND CAMPAIGN - AIRBORNE OPERATIONS - Game # 2
As I won the FORT EBEN EMAEL scenario I get a free infantry unit and place it in the woods next to the Neufchateau exit hex. My 3 VE rolls are FLG STR INF so Johan draws one less card to start the game and loses an infantry fig and retreats his center infantry out of the town into woods. Johan rolls two INF so I lose 2 infantry figs.
Johan then spends one RT on his ARM GRE roll and places a panzer on the center hill next to the Bodange hex. My FLG GRE Reserve rolls see me get a free sandbag and I place it on the Arty unit that I place on the Neufchateau exit hex after spending 1 RT.
I wipe out the center sandbag infantry on Turn 1 with an Inf -- Arty -- Tank attack. A German BEL ordered infantry never gets to attack my right Belgium 1 fig tank as I play AMBUSH and get 2 hits and a flag on the infantry.
A few turns later a German plane hits on three strafing shot on my right -- one attack wiping out the Belgium tank. But I then finish off the 1 fig Ger Inf on my right and lead 2 to 0.
A few turns later the German ME-109 -- which had been flying Interdiction the last 2 turns -- is downed by a 1 die AC and I get my third medal. The now 2 fig panzer then charges forward from a center town hex into the center -- right hex but misses the center Belgium tank with a shot.
My CENTER ASSAULT see my move an infantry next to Whitry and advance other units. The panzer is killed with but 2 shots. A German infantry moves into Whirty to protect it. Two other German infantry move from the German right into the center - one leaveing Nives.
I COUNTER-ATTACK the German MOVE OUT and move infantry to within 2 hexes of Nives and Leglise. Johan must now try and protect two towns and a 2 fig infantry near Nives. He cannot do all this and I march into Leglise for the 5 to 0 win.
The keys here was me wiping out the panzer with 3 shots and my arty which blocked the exit hex and posed an added threat to the German infantry.

Game # 2 of a PBEM Vassal Match which I lost 5 (22 figs) to 6 (24) figs.
The early game saw the Germans kill off my French tank after it had moved into the center -- on 1 hit off a Recon airstrike - 1 hit on a BEL and then the last on another BEL (a CA from my CA of the first BEL). I had secured Witry in the center and killed a German infantry to lead 2 to 1.
The battle stayed in the center and my CLOSE ASSAULT killed off a 2 fig infantry there. A German INF ASSAULT saw three German infantry move and a 2d attack flagged my infantry out of Witry to make it a 2 to 1 game. The 1 fig Ger infantry that had attacked wisely choose not the take ground into the town. I then used BARRAGE to pick off a center 2 fig infantry. A German Recon Air Strike on my right went 4 for 4 and killed off one of the Beligum depleted tank units. But my followup INF ASSAULT saw two center infantry move into two medal towns - Witry and Leglise for the 5 to 1 win.
Despite decent cards the Germans still had trouble defending the three medal towns as they could not kill units.

Well this one was over in short order.
After I made an offensive move on my right with 2 infantry -- getting 2 hits vs the French tank -- these two units were wiped out on a Allied 3 unit TFH. It took but 12 shots to wipe out both my infantry and give the Allies a 2 to 0 lead.
This all but ensured my defeat. A few turns later I would lose another infantry in the center -- a 2 fig to a BEL attack. My CA only got one hit vs an infantry with no retreat on my right.
Now I was heavily outnumbered in the center and my right. I had little choice but to move my lone right infantry into the center and all but concede the medal town there.
My one shining moment came from the Luftwaffe off the play of a Recon Center card as my Air Strike hit two infantry and killed off both 1 fig depleted tank units in the center.
No matter as a 2 Allied infantry attack in the center then wiped out my 3 fig infantry in the medal town.
The Allies shot 16 for 20 vs my infantry -- 80% - ouch!!
I suspect that the panzers do not appear to often in this scenario.
As this gets played more often I suspect the Allied win ratio in this will climb well past its present 60% mark.

This was a reverse of our previous battle at Fort Eben-Emael. This time, Adam's Belgians and French meant business.
The first medal of the game was earned when I destroyed a 2-fig armor unit with TFH.
Then Adam counter-attacked and destroyed 2 of my infantry units. 2 to 1.
I was drawing almost all section cards for 2, 3, or All units. That helped very little with my arrangement. I needed Recon 1 cards and Tactics cards. I got a few tactics cards, which helped a little. I had multiple failed rolls against his 1-fig armor on the ARF and he made some good withdrawals with his 1-fig units.
Next, he captured one of the cities, earning an objective medal. 3 to 1.
I finished off another of his infantry units next. 3 to 2.
He destroyed one of my infantry units in a city. I had moved down to attack his 1-fig units, but his rolls against my unit there came out excellent, and I never finished any of those units. At the end, he had three 1-fig infantry units there. Grrr.
Then, before I ever managed to get a 3rd medal, he took out another of my infantry units that was stuck in the open. 5 to 2.

German started with a quite strong hands - Attack Right, TFH, 1-1-1, and BEL, but without early reinforcement and with Allies brought an additional infantry and artillery, the battle was almost impossible to win for them.
Even though the BEL was able to destroy a 1-fig tank, but with great cards in hand still nothing much they can do to watch an outnumbered enemies started closing them in and crippled them one by one.
In the later turn, a brave attack on the left side by the German was ambushed and two units quickly were killed. By the time German have the chance to brought out a panzer reinforcement, it was all too late as the center infantry finally occupied an objective and won them the game in a fast-paced-8-turns game.

This scenario is good - tense and exciting - but should be played to 5 flags.
Very tactical initially - the Germans withdrew to the line of towns and the Allies crept up in all sections. Then it all kicked off at once! The Axis could have won with some excellent cards.
Balance may be closer if the Allies lose a flag for losing all 3 of their 1 figure armoured units?

Assuming my French is correct, "- Les unités blindées à une figurine représentent les blindés belges T-13 ou T-15 qui accompagnaient les chasseurs ardennais. Leur destruction ne compte pas pour une médaille." means that the Axis do not get medals for the units labeled "1."
The only advantage the Axis seem to have in this scenario is the dense terrain, which offsets the armor advantage the Allies have, especially if three of the units do not count for medals.
