C’était ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

A highly determined German army served notice to its enemy that the war in the East was far from over. The Soviets began the battle according to plan by building a pontoon bridge and ordering several armor units across the river after only two turns. But the Red Army’s subsequent push towards Prekuln was beaten back by stiff German resistance, featuring the first appearance of the mighty Tiger tank. The next several turns saw attacks and counterattacks in front of the village as each side tried to gain the upper hand. German ultimately prevailed thanks to superior command cards and the indomitable Tigers, one unit of which captured the river bridge and withstood desperate attempts by the Russians to dislodge it before eliminating a Soviet tank unit with a close assault for the final medal.

It was a tight battle where the victor was in doubt until the very last turn. The main struggle took place in the centre where Russians tried to Germans. German Tigers tried to annihilate the Russian right flank but took casualties and then decided to reinforce the centre. At the same time, rather than wait for engineers who never came with the pontoons, Russian armoured forces went over the single bridge to help the titanic struggle in the centre. Both sides fed the forces into the furnace. What decided the struggle in the favour of Germans was the resiliance of Tigers who, despite the 75% loss rate absorbed great many failed shots while at the same time German artillery and Luftwaffe scored some important hits.

A ftf game.
I elim 40 figs to 36 lost.
I build one bridge on my left behind the hills. Two attempts are made to blow the bridge but both fail. I make several attempts to kill off the Tigers (5 attacks with 14d total) but I only get one hit and miss the reroll. I send armor into the center but it is worn down and killed off. I do take out the center panzers and an arty on my left.
The main battle is fought in the center although I make three infantry kills on my left. A final German push made with infantry from the village does little and I end the game with a BEL from my left and INF ASSAULT in the center which allows me to move two infantry into the village and claim the two medals needed for the win. Had the German left armor moved into the center, I think it may have been a different result.
I lost two panzers, two elite infantry and eight infantry and the Allies controlled one bridge while Steve lost two tanks, an infantry and seven paras and I controlled one bridge.

Almost everything went wrong for the Russians. Hard to hit the Germans (dice). Then run into an armour counter attack. Then the Germans broke the attack with an ambush. Etc.

Pat and I tried our absolute best to win this one as the Russians, but we lost 13 to 12. On our last turn we reached our 12th medal, and it seemed like we would easily get our winning medal on the next turn. Tom and Casey still had to earn 3 medals to win, but that's just what they did on their last turn, with two of the medals gained by destroying artillery units, and with one of those even a full unit. Russians ALMOST broke the German lines, but Tigers suddenly ran wild along the Soviet baseline, and the offensive was called off.

I started out by building two pontoon bridges on my left and center.
The German right infantry then occupied the hills next to one of my pontoon bridges. My left tanks = ordered by a DHQ caused some damage to these units but got no kills. A German ARTY BOMBARD killed off one of my Elite Tanks. A few turns later a panzer was killed in the center with the use of a FIREFIGHT. I would also kill off an infantry on my left. But the Germans would strike back on their next turn and continue their deadly fire on my armor - killing off two more tanks. I would kill off another infantry on my left.
A German center INF ASSAULT would then fire several shots against my tanks but miss most of the shots. As the Germans had been shifting their left armor over into the center I had done likewise - making it a top priority to shift my left armor into the center also.
A midgame Russian AP would wreak havoc on the German infantry in the town - getting 7 hits with 8 shots. The village looked ripe for the taking. My follow up attacks killed off two infantry on my left and another two in the center. I now had a 7 to 3 lead.
I would then lose a tank next turn to the German armor ordered by ARMOR ASSAULT. My own ARMOR ASSAULT on the next turn would order three left tanks - two would close with the arty on the hill and get a hit on it. My center BEL infantry failed to get a hit on a cutoff panzer - not a great turn. I would then lose two center units - an infantry and a tank to make it a 7 to 6 game. I then killed off a center panzer. I then lost a center tank - my armor was going up in smoke!!
I then played TFH - ordering 8 units across the board including 3 tanks. I would pick off two infantry in the center but miss that 1 fig arty with 3d. The Germans amde it a 10 to 9 game by killing two more center infantry.
I would then whiff on a 3d attack vs a 1 fig panzer - I had done the same thing last turn on the same unit. The Germans then used this panzer to wipe out two 1 fig tank units - I forgot I had AMBUSH and probably could have prevented these attacks although a tiger may have doen the same thing. It was now a 11 to 10 game in favor of the Germans. I tried BEL again on that same 1 fig panzer and missed again - so far 11 shots against this unit and it still lives!! I also miss that 1 fig arty with 2d. The German try TFH hour and order 11 units but most of these cannot fire. The 1 fig panzer advances to fire 4d on a weak tank but I finally play that AMBUSH and with 2d kill off that unit to tie the game at 11.
I play BARRAGE to kill off a 1 fig infantry on the right German baseline. I then attack a cutoff Tiger with my infantry on the hill outside of the village - I get one hit and the reroll is a grenade!! Wow - what a way to end things.
The German fire was deadly - hitting 41% against my tanks and 75% against my infantry. One their 1d attacks against my infantry they hit on 8 of 9 shots.
My BEL attacks proved to be a bust - going 0 for 4 against the panzers.
The German played no less than 7 ASSAULT cards - both ARTY BOMBARDS - both INF ASSAULTS along with TFH and an ARMOR ASSAULT. They also played four RECONs which helped when drawing cards. A very deadly battle and one that could have gone the other way.

Final attempt by Mark to win as the Russians. Good start for him as he killed a Tiger on his 1st go. But he quickly went behind, and when he lost his artillery in the centre, he could never catch up.

This final game of the night saw me gain revenge when I ran the Germans against Jim and Chuck's Russians. The Germans were dominant as usual in this scenario and quickly took the lead. The Russians were battered on their right flank and in the center and were not able to get enough tanks over the river. Another one sided win for the Germans in this scenario.

Geekway to the West Overlord battle.
A desperate defense by the Germans smashed the Communist threat. A valiant rear-guard defense from the right flank allowed the center hold firm, while the mighty Tigers on the left over ran the cowering Reds.

I played 1v4 of my friends who are relatively new to the game, and beat them by plowing all my left flank tanks into the German held town.
They brought the Tigers into the center and I was able to fight them off, killing 3 of them. I had great rolls and pretty good cards. At one point, they were within one medal, but I bumped his infantry off of my pontoon bridge and rolled into the middle town for the 2 medal victory.

Tigers on the Move!
Really great armor cards for the Germans put the Soviets on the defensive in their right flank. The Tigers were mauling everything for several turns.
Good use of Air Power and multiple counterattacks kept the Soviets in the match in the center.
The armor mass in the Soviet left flank took several turns to get into the action, and by the time they did, those forces had been dwindled down by German artillery.
Fun scenario! Part of our monthly Overlord night at a FLGS

The battle began along the Russian right with three German Tigers staged and unleashed with an Armor Assault card. Although they reaped destruction upon the Russian right, all three Tigers were, ironically, destroyed - one simply with one die kill followed up with a grenade.
Throughout all of this, the Russian T38's never received word from high command to advance, so they sat and waited. Eventually, a pontoon bridge was erected but the Germans quickly blew it up on the next turn. The Russian left remained quiet.
As a few tanks from the Russian left maneuvered toward the center, the Russians made a push toward the center of the German defenses. This was attempted in previous battles and was typically unsuccessful. This recent attempt proved to be the same, resulting in a small German counter-attack which yielded them many points.
Finally, another pontoon bridge was built along the Russian left and the tanks moved out and toward the enemy nested in the trees. Without ground troops this proved to be too little, too late as the German reinforced what was already a strong center and moved ahead to victory.

First time using the Tigers and I, the Axis, took a while to realise these things are the business! Soon waded in and stomped over the left flank, before running out of left flank cards and was down to initiative rolls to keep the Tigers attacking. This allowed the Russians to come in and bring the scores to around 8 medals each before the Axis was able to pick up momentum and finally clinch a close fought victory. Cards weren't in my favour, with 4 infantry attacking cards and 2 Dig ins! But you go with what you have and make the best of it. Very good game, and glad the Tigers were with me, not against me!!

Possibly the best overlord experience I've had yet. My nephew and I played the Germans, and we decided to bring all our armor to the Center to support the village, while I held out with infantry and artillery on the Soviet Left. Ruskies built a pontoon bridge in the middle of the Left flank and all those tanks swarmed across just like I feared they would. Somehow, my infantry and artillery destroyed five Soviet tank units in some of the most intense M44 combat I've ever experienced. All I had left after this gauntlet was two units of walking wounded infantry and some shell-shocked artillery crews. While this was going on, the remaining Soviet armor was in the Center slugging it out with our tanks in front of the village. The fields in front of the village were filled with smoking tanks with only two Tigers and one regular armored unit remaining. Germans held, but barely. Germans 13, Soviets 11.

A close battle. The Russians grabbed an early advantage and appeared on their way to victory. However some devastating German counterattacks in the center of the battlefield eventually turned the tide for the Axis. As we have found in the past it is VERY difficult for the Russians to win this scenario.

The battle raged back and forth. The Russians were able to get a large number of tank units over the frozen river and into the battle in the center. They looked like possible winners until the Germans were able to play Their Finest Hour. This devastating counterattack finally turned the tide in the Germans' favor. A hard fought victory but it continues the pattern in which the Germans have been able to win the vast majority of times in this battle.

I decided to train two friends, Patrick C and Michel K. It's their first game of Memoir'44. Overlord set-up and complete rules explanations was a bit too long (1hour approx)
We played for at least 4h a long and tense game, me vs 2. They decided to both play the role of Commander-in-Chief (CinC) and field General. The downside was that it took a good amount of discussions on the German side. I was struggling with a difficult position and poor hand of cards to try to get the best from the special rules for the USSR side.
Furthermore, we had a tasting of various old whiskies during this evening, so it added a bit to the difficulty to stay focused! ;)

We played this game using the Air Rules to see if that affected the use of the Tigers. Infact, the Russians used their plane to attack the village and managed, by keeping in the air and not rolling Grenades, to inflict significant casualties on the German infantry.
However a key tactical mistake by the Russians was not to advance their infantry on to the village and instead attack with their armour. Nor did they attempt to build a pontoon bridge, causing traffic jams across the only river crossing.
On the German left the Tigers pressed forward and across towards the centre. This had the effect of keeping the Russians in the woods, thus allowing the Tigers to pick off their targets, though one Tiger was eventually lost.
The game was very close and the Russians could have won in the penultimate turn but a German Firefight card eventually won the day in the centre.

TACTICS:
The Russian tactick was to take The village as soons as possible, to take advantage of the 2 medals.
The Germans on the other hand planned to move their tigers as soon as possible to the right flank to keep the Russian tanks behind the river.
THE GAME:
The russian Plan did not work as planned. Their infantery assualt was stopped en crushed due to bad dice for the russian and good for the German. The german planned to get the tigers to the other flank took some turns because of bad cards but eventually worked nice, althoud the russian first medal was a Tiger due to a lucky shot! After 4 turn the german still kept the city and the tigers spread terror amongst the Russian ranks. Dice luck was still on the german side when the russian made a last attempt to break the german defence, and although it failed they took 3 medals and saved the honor of their officers.
CONCLUSION.
The russian plan was good, but failed due bad luck.
The German tactic worked great and the tigers got much of the medals earned. If the Russian dice rolls were better the first turn, things could have been very different.

Game was decided in the center of the battlefield. Germans were able to eventually push to Russian start line with combination of infantry and armor (not Tigers). Russians were about one turn from victory when Germans got the final two kills needed for the win.

The great majority of the action occurred in the center. The only losses for either side on the flanks were 1 Russ Inf lost on their right and 1 Ger Elite Inf lost on their right.
There were two BARRAGES played during the game (one off a CA card). The Russians ended up coming out on the short end as both Russian Artys were killed off via these attacks whereas the German lost 1 Arty fig and 1 panzer fig. The loss of the Russ arty in the center did hurt them.
After taking a 3 to 0 lead early, Steve tied the game by killing off a Tiger (3 shots - 2 hits and a reroll hit) and a panzer.
I had back to back poor turns where I got a total of 4 hits from over 20 shots including a TFH which ordered nut 6 units of which only 4 could fire. Steve kept on playing fairly good center cards. Luckily, I could respond with some good center cards of my own including ARMOR ASAULT. I kept trying to feed armor into the center to setup the use of that card. But I was stymied as Steve kept killing my panzers here. I was able to pick off two 1 fig units in the center with AIR POWER (a tank and Inf) to make it a 5 to 3 game.
But Steve tied the game again. Going 3 for 3 on one of my panzers then getting three grenades on another Tiger and killing that unit on the 3 dice reroll. So far, he used 12 rolls to eliminated 2 Tigers.
Then, I got things going as I killed off 5 units on one turn and boosted the score to 10 to 5. A key here was using ARMOR ASSAULT to order a Tiger and a panzer. My first 4 dice attack vs a 2 fig tank got but two flags. I then tired to pick off a 1 fig tank that had no retreat path w/ 1 shot but missed. Luckily my tiger was able to kill off a 3 fig Inf (4 shots) and the 2 fig tank on the boardedge (3 shots) to get two key medals.
I was then able to finish off the game by bagging another center tank. I then flagged an Inf onto the center bridge. My adjacent panzer then rolled two flags and was able to take ground onto that bridge for the win.

A little reckless in sending the Russian tank army across a pontoon bridge only to be mauled by German right flank and counter attacking panzers. Clung on but couldnt finish off those darn Tigers!!
Allied Left: On the first turn, the Russians built a bridge between the forest and hill hexes, and also moved three tanks closer to it. The next turn, they followed with an Assault Left - the first of 6 Left cards (including 3 Assaults) in the next 7 turns. When a German infantry came out to attack the lead tank on the first turn, it was promptly eliminated. The lead Russian tank fell to a Firefight on turn 2. But turns 3-5, the German Right was totally luckless: A second Firefight rolled 0 hits in 7 dice, an attempt to blow a bridge (with a 4-figure Russian armor) failed, Medics failed to help an infantry, and the German hill artillery was eliminated. After the Russian 8th turn, the Allies were leading this section, 3-1.
Center: While the Russians were pouring tanks across the bridge on the left, they were doing the same with the center bridge. In addition, a second-turn Air Power against the four infantries in Prekulin scored 6 hits. By the end of the Russian 5th turn, two town infantries and a tank had fallen … and a 7th turn Close Assault eliminated two more infantries and a tank. After the Russian 7th turn, the Allies were leading in this section, 6-0, with one unit and one empty hex in the medal town.
Allied Right: The first 5 turns, the Allied Right FG got no cards and had no successful initiative rolls. Then came three cards: Probe, Dig In, and Recon-1, followed by no cards for two more turns. Meanwhile, the Germans plinked off a few infantry figures, and eventually were able to donate some tanks to the Center section. During the entire game, the only kill in this section was a single Russian infantry.
So, after 6 turns, the Allies led, 6-1. After 7 turns, their lead was 9-3. The battle continued ….
Allied Left: After scoring their initial three kills, the Russians used an Assault Left to redeploy three tanks toward the infantries in the outer section. On turn 8. German artillery destroyed a 2-figure tank in the woods along the river. The next few turns, German infantry and artillery battled the two other Russian tanks that had crossed the river, with the result being
2 dead infantry units and 2 more dead Russian armors.
Center: A 6th turn German Armor Assault had reduced two Russian tanks to single figures and scored two hits against an infantry unit. The next turn, one of the two single tanks was eliminated by a Tiger, and the other was felled by an artillery shot from the German Left. While the Russians would kill one of the Tigers on turn 8, they would score no further kills in the Center. On turn 9, German infantry and Left artillery deleted the invading infantry from the tow, while a Tiger eliminated the last forward Russian tank in the center.
Allied Right: The Tigers finished killing the rightmost infantry on turn 10.
After 10 turns, it was 12-9, Allies. But there were no easy kills on the board for the Russians.
Turn 11: One Russian infantry had crossed the river and gotten as far as the German artillery, but it now retreated, and the artillery reduced it to 2 figures. Also, the Germans killed an exposed 3-figure infantry.
Turn 12: On a Russian initiative roll, the 2-figure infantry had to retreat onto the bridge, where a German Probe Right eliminated it. The remaining Russian tank (1 figure) advanced to try to kill a Tiger, and the Tiger responded by shredding it. Russian artillery reduced the Center sandbag infantry to 2 figures. A German BEL on the left scored 2 hits against a sandbagged 3-figure infantry in the woods. (If the BEL had been used in the center, it would have had an 80% chance to kill the tank and take the medal bridge for a 2-point score.)
Turn 13: Russia played two Right cards and a Center, plus a Left tank on initiative. They tried to knock out a Tiger, but 6 dice didn’t do it. And 3 artillery shots scored only 1 hit against the 2-figure infantry in the sandbag. Germany responded with cards to the Right and Center, as well as a Barrage. If the Barrage hadn’t wiped out a 1-figure Russian infantry on the back line, either of the other cards would have captured a bridge for the win.
A remarkable come-from-behind victory for the Germans, 13-12, with 54-48 hits, in 13 turns.
In the early turn, German's Tiger on the left flank eliminated a...
In the early turn, German's Tiger on the left flank eliminated almost all infantries on that side but Russian artillery proved to be deadly as it wiped out three Tigers until the end of the game.
Russian was struggling with left cards and no Attack Left to build a Pontoon bridge so they were forced to order the tanks to cross the only bridge in the middle. Russian was losing time as the German built up defenses on that flank while keep attacking with their Tigers.
The most interesting part is on the later game, Russian was leading by 1 point and one infantry was able to occupy Prekulin. So that condition left them with only one more medal and one infantry to seize the town for two medals to win the game, but their Artillery Bombard on the right flank which have high probability of killing an infantry only able to reduce him to 1-fig.
This gave the German more than enough time to play their Firefight and Attack Right card to eliminate two infantries at the town to force the Russian returning the medals. In the next turn, Russian built a Pontoon on their left flank and a BEL took out a weakened unit, but German long distance 1d attack was able to knocked out Russian 1-fig artillery and gave them the victory.
Judging from the figure elimination ratio, German was able to kill more because of their roaming Tigers while the Russian was stucked with their tanks unable to cross the frozen rivers, therefore their attack mainly came from the artillery and infantry assault.
A great comeback by German after standing on the edge of losing!

I was the German High Command on this one:
Two things that stand out to me was the power of the Tigers and how they successfully swept through on the Left Flank and were beginning to move heavily into Tom's Center. Also, on Kristin's Right, her unit (now Highly Decorated for their famous Stand on Pontoon Bridge 102) that withstood 8 die rolls from Jeff's persistent T-34s.
Trying to blow bridges with option 2 just did not work out. I suppose it's a good use of a card when there's a full unit of T-34's sitting on there and it suddenly becomes a 2 victory point shot. (Do you get VPs for pontoon bridges?)

Tigers left only an artillery unit in the german right flank before moving into the center section to stop the advancing russian armor.
Russians started ok, but german tigers took over and secured the win. Lost two tigers, one early and one just a round from the end.

Played this one at Origins, great game. Soviets built bridges on the the German right flank. Germans dug in, once the Soviets crossed the river, Germans "firefight", Soviets play Armor assault (Ambushed) and Germans counter with an "All". German left flank and Soviet right was relativly quiet the whole game.

Gene was an excellent partner and a final Move Out card took the town for the victory . Well fought, but all 4 tigers bit the dust. Barry and Winter Storm were partners for John (TC).

Russians got three of the tigers, but too late. They also had a hard time capturing the town. Russian left built a pontoon bridgevthat was immediatly captured by the Germans, whip the main bridge was blown. A good one-on-one battle.

I build a bridge on my left behind the hills. I move two center tanks over the river. Sam gets some hits on my center tanks.
I play ARMOR ASSAULT in my center w/ two tanks and move two more tanks across my pontoon bridge. I attack the German left. I roll double grenades against the Russian arty on the hill and kill off an Inf. Sam gets his Tigers rolling and picks off one of my left tanks. I play AIR POWER and target the two center panzers(2 hits on each), the arty and an Inf (2 hits). I play DIG IN in my center and kill off an Inf on my left. Sam kills off another of my left tanks. I lose another one the next German turn and a Tiger is now in the center. I continue to attack the German left and kill off two more Inf along w/ another in the center. I now lead6 to 3. Another Russian tank goes up in flames. I may be doing damage to the Russian right but it is getting costly. With the help of BARRAGE, I kill off a center panzer and also an Inf. I eliminate another Inf on my left. A German armor assault hits my right and center. I lose another tank and an Inf. But then I play TFH and order two tanks on my left, two Inf and an arty in the center and two Inf on my right. I kill a Tiger in the center w/ but 1 hit and also finish off a 1 fig panzer there too. But I fail to kill off another cutoff Tiger -- 12 shots -- 6 hits and miss all the rerolls. But I do have an 11 to 6 lead. Sam kills off a 2 fig Inf on my right but whiffs w/ 9 shots vs one of my tanks. I then kill off that same tiger (aided by ARMOR ASSAULT and take a 12 to 7 lead. Sam fails to recover any figs for his 1 fig panzer in the center. That was about all for the German turn. My next turn is a little more exciting as I get two hits on an Inf in the town. Sam picks up two medals -- an Inf and a tank. But then I finish it with a DHQ in the center and have 4 shots to kill off the 1 fig Inf in the town. My first shot from the arty does it and a 13 to 9 win goes to me.
This was game # 2 of a PBEM Vassal which I win 26 to 14.

Sam starts by pushing a couple of Inf forward in the center and moving two tanks across the bridge. I move two of my Tigers forward to fire on an Inf in the open but get 1 hit from 6 shots. I do reduce a center Inf to 1 fig w/ an attack by a panzer and Inf though. An Allied AP hits hard on my right - all three Ger Inf in the woods is hit twice and my arty is hit once and has to retreat. A big push in the center - a 2 & ALL card - order two tanks, two arty and four Inf. My panzer is hit twice - on 2 shots and the Inf in the woods by the town is reduced to 1 fig. One Inf in the town is also hit. I hold little that can command in the center other than two INF ASSAULT cards - and I do not wish to use these and move my Inf from cover. I do hold two ARMOR ASSAULTS and choose to use one of these in the center to order my 2 panzers there although only one can get adjacent to an enemy unit. I bring a Tiger onto the center hill and move another Tiger closer to the Russian lines. That Tiger kills off a 3 fig Inf w/ 3 shots. One of my panzers picks off the 1 fig Russian Inf in the center. My second tiger and my arty reduce another Inf to 1 fig where my other panzer misses its first 4 shots but its OR attack gets the one hit needed to kill it. I now lead 3 to 0. My center panzer gets hit once from 8 shots but is pushed back a to my baseline. Sam kills the center 1 fig Inf in the woods and TGs into that hex. A Tiger is hit twice but survives the rerolls - my center Tiger is missed twice. I try to destroy the pontoon bridge laid down by the two center hills on my right but miss. I move another Tiger into the center - now two of the big cats roam there - good hunting. I flag the Inf from the woods by the town and now that unit is cutoff. Three more flags from my panzer fire reduces that unit to 1 fig. My first Tiger gets 2 hits vs an Inf. My other tiger finishes off the 1 fig Inf and gets another hit on the 2 fig Inf and flags it. A Russian BARRAGE fails to have any effect on my right arty on the hill. Two tanks cross the pontoon bridge and now sit on the hills. Two other tanks move - one up to the river and the other closer to the bridge. One of my 2 fig PG Inf in reduce to 1 fig from the across river fire of a tank. The other 2 fig Inf is missed twice from the tank fire from the hills though. Sam's ARTY BOMBARD fires 6 shots vs my center panzer on the hills but only gets a single hit. I play my second ARMOR ASSAULT in the center - this time with a panzer and two Tigers. The other two Tigers on my left move up into action. My left Tigers 2 shots get a hit on a Russ Inf in the woods. My panzer gets 2 hits vs an Elite tank then my Tiger finishes it off. Its OR attack w/ 2 shots vs the 1 fig Inf in the woods misses. But my artys lone shot got him. My other Tiger gets a hit on an Inf on the hill w/ 3 shots. Lastly, a lone shot from my PG Inf gets a hit on one of the tanks on the right hill by the pontoon bridge. I now have a 5 to 2 lead. Sam then attacks the 1 fig PG Inf on my right (I play AMBUSH and get a hit) and misses both shots w/ his tanks. He does get a hit on the other PG Inf and it is down to 1 fig now. Six shots vs a Tiger only get one hit and the reroll misses. The one fig panzer is missed too - 1 shot.I now play my third ARMOR ASSAULT in the center and an INF ASSAULT on my right. I figure I might as well get some use out of my weak Inf over there before they are picked off one by one. My center panzer gets a hit and two flags vs an Inf on a hill and then blasts a tank (3 for 3) with its OR attack. One of my tigers rolls 7 dice vs an arty but only gets a flag. My other tiger kills a tank across the river on the baseline (GRE,ARM,ARM roll) - wow!!I pick off a 1 fig tank on my right too. I now lead 9 to 2. Sam plays ARMOR ASSAULT on my right but misses on his first attack - 2 shots vs a 1 fig PG Inf. He kills off the 1 and 2 fig Inf there though and gets a hit on my arty on the hill. He fires six more shots vs a Tiger in the center but gets no hits. My center attack kills off an Inf and the baseline 1 fig arty and gets a hit on the other center arty (the only Russian unit left in the center). I get two hits on a tank on my right. Sam records 2 hits on my left Tigers but all the rerolls miss. I lose a 1 fig Inf on my right and the score stands at 11 to 5. I then play DHQ in my center and order two units on both flanks. My 1 fig panzer crosses the fixed bridge and one of my Tigers rolls onto that bridge for a medal (my 12th). My right arty kills the 1 fig tank - 3 shots and game - 13 to 5.

Early on, the Germans Tigers were having their way on the Soviet right, while the Soviet armor remained bogged down early by the river and lack of suitable cards to make Pontoon Bridges.
The center started as an infantry and artillery showdown with the Germans doing well to hold the town and inflict casualties but struggling to finish off depleated Soviet units (perhaps a little too conservative in the center not wanting to leave the sandbags and protection of the town).
The Germans then kinda misplayed their Tigers a bit and got them bogged down on the Soviet far right, and a very lucky infantry Assault play saw the loss of the first two Tigers.
Once the Soviets finally got a pontoon bridge set up, they struggled to get a solid bridgehead across the river and took heavy armored losses. Part of this was due to a misplay of where to put the bridge in hindsight. The other part is simply infantry in wooded terrain is very tank unfriendly ;) .
The score was pretty even with the Soviet right petering out due to few remaining units. But on the turn where the Soviets finally secured a decent bridgehead on the left, they also drew an Armored Assault card!
The Germans managed to damage the lead Soviet elements over the bridge but were unable to finish them (leaving a unit with 1 remaining tank and an elite with two).
The Armored Assault card (and the extra die it provided for close assault) ended up swinging the tide on the left a one damaged Soviet tank pushed toward the center to finish off a unit and damage a second one, and the damaged elite was able to finish off a second unit. At the same time, a lucky roll in the center saw a 1 figure Soviet Infantry eliminate a German unit unable to retreat. That made the score 12-8.
The Germans threw everything they had back at the Soviets, finishing off the 1 figure Infantry, 1 figure Tank, and a third depleted unit. A full strength Soviet Infantry caught in the open stemmed the tide, by absorbing 3 losses from an armored close assault and holding their ground to avoid overrun, as the German counterattack petered out.
Having drawn AIR POWER, ARMOR ASSAULT and CONUTERATTACK, I start...
Having drawn AIR POWER, ARMOR ASSAULT and CONUTERATTACK, I start w/ a decent hand. The problem I faced with the first turn AIR POWER was which target group do I hit. I was tempted to go after the Tigers but they are too difficult to hit. I next looked at the Inf in and around the village. I could weaken them up a bit as a prelude to taking the village. But I settled on hitting the more dangerous center panzers. I hit one twice along with the PG Inf. I also hit the other panzer and retreated the arty out of its sandbags. I then built a pontoon bridge near the two hills on the German side of the river. This would give me a crossing point a bit closer to most of my armor. I then moved two tanks over the river on the fixed bridge and scored a hit on a German Infantry. Well, Dave blew my pontoon bridge in his turn and then went 2 for 2 on one of my tanks in the center. Back to square one. I then scored some more hits on the German Inf then Dave killed off my 1 fig tank for the first medal of the game. I then played my CENTER ALL but only got 4 hits and missed the 1 fig panzer w/ 3 shots – drat. Dave then counterattacks my CENTER ALL. But his firing is worse than mine and I lay down my own COUNTERAATACK (CENTER ALL). This time I kill off a 2 fig Inf, the 1 fig panzer,a 3 fig Inf, a 1 fig Inf and finally roll double grenades on the German right arty – five kills and a 5 to 1 lead. I lose a Russian Inf but then kill off one of the village Inf and take ground. I now have a 6 to 2 lead. Another Russian Inf falls with the help of a Tiger attack. But then I kill off two center panzers for an 8 to 3 lead. Dave follows this up with a strong turn (reinforced by tanks from his left) as I lose two tanks and an Inf and now lead 8 to 6. Dave also blows the fixed bridge and now the rest of my armor near my baseline (4 units) have no way across. But then I play ARMOR ASSAULT and eliminate a panzer and two Infantry (I had missed a 1 fig Inf in the village w/ a 2 shot OR attack but then nailed it w/ a 1 shot OR attack later). I now lead 11 to 6 and more importantly have cleared the village of all German forces and control the area around it. So its two medals are there for the taking. Dave plays BEL (2 fig left PG Inf) and moves a center Inf into a village hex. His PG Inf gets ambushed by my 2 fig tank though and takes a hit and retreats. No attack for this unit. One my next turn I kill off another Infantry and lose one myself to make the score 11 to 7 Russian before I move into tow hexes of the village to claim a 13 to 7 win.

Got to play this scenario today and I notched a win as the Germans 13 to 8. I did not get to use the Tigers too often (total lack of left cards). But they did do some damage later in the game. A first turn German BARRAGE wiped out on Sov arty. Then three Sov tanks bit the dust. Soon I had a 6 to 1 lead. My opponent Dave built a pontoon bridge early and got several tank units across the river, but many of those were set on fire. I destroyed the pontoon bridge soon after. I then shifted two panzers and a Tiger to my center. This proved to be the final blow as a center German offensive crushed the Russians. The German defense never wavered.
