By: jdrommel - Last update: 05/12/2014

Historical Background:
After the capture of Krasnodar in August 1942, German 5.Armee Korps, part of the German 17.Armee advancing towards the Caucasus, turned to the west to capture the Russian harbours on the Black Sea. The German vanguard arriving on the hills that overlooked Novorossiisk and seeing the Black Sea, sent a radio message "Thalassa, Thalassa!" to report the arrival to the coast. Novorossiisk was an important harbour and industrial city, defended by Soviet troops of the 47th Army. The battle ended on the 10th of September when German infantrymen of 73 and 125.Infanterie Division reached the wharf of Novorossiisk. But after this capture, the German advance to the Caucasus failed because of lack of reinforcement and resupply in front of a persistent Soviet resistance.
