Historical Background:
On the 8th of November 1942, US troops of the Northern Landing Group (part of the Task Force 34 in charge of Morocco), landed on the beach of Mehdia in order to capture the airfield of Port-Lyautey. The French were first ready to welcome US troops but they received the order to repulse any landing, so it became a tragedy. French infantrymen of the 1st RTM, supported by three old tanks FT-17, repelled the landed troops and recaptured the Kasbah of Mehdia. At the end of the day, the US bridgehead was only one beach exit. During the night, each belligerent was reinforced : R-35 light tanks for the French and M3 Stuart light tanks for the US. The tank battle which occurred on the 9th of November was favorable to the French, they lost only two tanks against four Stuart destroyed. But the intervention of the Navy aviation changed the odds of the battle in spite of numerous French counter-attacks. The ceasefire was declared after 48 hours of battle and the death of 89 Americans, 133 French and Moroccans.
