Historical Background:
While the negotiations began between the France Vichy general staff and the Allied general staff, the battle continued on the ground. On the west of Damascus, Moroccan soldiers of France Vichy, under the command of colonel Péfontan, were entrenched on djebel Maazar and djebel Habil. On the 11th of July, British soldiers of the 16th Brigade, 6th Infantry Division, attacked djebel Maazar and the Free French attacked djebel Habil. Once again the battle was fierce and the British and Free French were driven back by the counter-attacks of the Moroccans. This was the last successful battle of the war for the French Army of Levant. The cease fire came into effect at midnight on the 12th of July. The war of Levant was over, after 34 days of battle.
