Historical Background:
March 1945, French General de Lattre de Tassigny had the order to cross the Rhine with the 1st French Army in order to capture later Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. On the 31st of March in the morning, 3rd RTA crossed the Rhine from Spire. In the south, at Germersheim, the 4th RTM and 151th Infantry Regiment crossed the river too under the fire of some German bunkers. And finally, on the 2nd of April at Leimersheim, the 21st RIC crossed the Rhine at its turn, as a vanguard of the 9th Division. In spite of the fierce resistance of German troops of the 16, 47 and 257.Volksgrenadier Division, the crossings were successful and the French gained several bridge heads on the opposite bank. After that, some pontoon bridges were built which allowed the crossing of tanks and artillery for the exploitation of the breakthrough. With the capture of Karlsruhe, the German campaign was on the good way.
