Historical Background:
Admiralty Islands were in the US plans for the reconquest of the New Guinea area because it was the place of a large bay able to hold the US fleet in its campaign to isolate the Rabaul Japanese base. On the 29th of February 1944, US troopers of the 5th US Cavalry Regiment landed on Hyane Bay on the island of Los Negros. Within two days, they captured a small beach head around Momote Airfield. They made a defense perimeter with mines because they don't had barbed wire to protect their entrenchment. During the night of the 3rd March, Japanese troops of Colonel Ezaki attacked the defense perimeter, crossing the minefields in front of US machine-guns. At dawn, the Japanese attack had failed, about 750 soldiers were lying on the ground around the US entrenchments.
