Historical Background: With the imminent loss of Minsk approaching, even Hitler could see that Army Group Centre was in grave danger. Hitler sacked Field Marshall Busch, & allowed Field Marshall Model to release the 5th Panzer Division from Army Group North, hoping that they could at least slow the Russian 5th Guards Tank Army's drive to Vilnius. Model wasn't known as Hitler's "Fireman" for nothing!
5th Panzer division, with 70 Panthers, 55 MK IVs & 20 Tigers of the Schwere Panzer Abteilung 505, took position around Molodechno. Their job was to hold the Minsk-Vilnius Highway, and allow as much as possible of Army Group Centre to escape, so that they could regroup behind Vilnius. The 13th Panzergrenider Regiments mission was to hold open the road East of Radoshkovichi. Once the rest of 5th Panzer division was assembled behind the 13th Panzergreniders, the entire Division was to counterattack towards the South-West. This counterattack was continually delayed and postponed due to a lack of fuel. It was not until the following week that battles began raging on the Radoshkovichi- Molodechno-Smorgon highway, as opportunistic attacks & counterattacks were made in turn by both sides. By 9th July, the 5th Panzer & supporting Pzabt 505, had knocked out 500 Soviet Tanks. However, they suffered similar losses themselves. The Russian 5th Guards were eventually halted at the Vistula, mainly due to exhaustion, but also to the efforts of the 5th Panzer division, & its attached Tigers Tanks.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
