Historical Background:
At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the Soviet troops defending the border, were quickly outflanked, then surrounded and finally destroyed. In the area of Bialystok, several Soviet units cut from the rear, took refuge in the forest of Bialovietsa, the last virgin forest in Europe. German 78.Infanterie Division was ordered to clear the forest from all Red Army elements. For the German soldiers , the fighting in a wooden area was not usual and the battle was hard against Soviet soldiers well camouflaged and firing at blank point. The capture of Popielevo village was nevertheless the end of the battle. In the evening of the 30th of June, the Bialovietsa forest was declared clear.
