Historical Background:
During Operation Talon, a British offensive in the Arakan area, the 3rd Commando Brigade landed on the 22nd of January 1945 on the banks of the Daingbon Chaung with the objective to capture the village of Kangaw and to cut the withdrawing road of the Japanese troops. After the landing of 1st Commando, vanguard of the Brigade, British troops advanced in a hard country made of jungle, mangrove, swamps and steep hills. They captured most of the Hill 170 after some close-combat with Japanese. From the 23rd of January the Japanese resistance increased and the Commando Brigade was stopped around and on Hill 170. On the early morning of 31st January, the 2nd battalion of 154th Japanese Infantry Regiment attacked Hill 170 hold by Troop 4 of 1st Commando, Troop W of 42nd Royal Marine Commando and a Sherman tank platoon of the 19th Lancers. Quickly the tanks were destroyed and Troop 4 was under heavy fire of mortars, machine-guns and snipers. The Japanese infantry launched several banzaï charges which were repulsed very often in close combat. The battle of Hill 170 lasted all the day and defenders were reinforced by Troop 6, 1st Commando. In the evening, two Troops of the 5th Commando relieved the defenders. Next morning, the British commandos found more than 340 Japanese killed on the slopes of Hill 170, on their side they suffered 45 KIA and 90 wounded.
