Historical Background: After the capture of Munda airfield in New Georgia in August 1943, US troops involved in Operation Cartwheel occupied the neighbouring islands (and particularly Vela Lavella). The 172nd Infantry Regiment landed on the 27th of August in Arundel island with no opposition and advanced to the north of the island. On the 5th of September, they were stopped by a Japanese fierce resistance near Stima Lagoon. So the US troops on Arundel were reinforced by the 27th Infantry Regiment and one battalion of the 169th Infantry Regiment. During the night 14th to 15th of September, the 13th Japanese Infantry regiment launched a bayonet attack on the US lines. The attack failed but losses were heavy on the two sides. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
