Historical Background: Before operation Toenails, the occupation of New Georgia, US Admiral Halsey ordered the capture of Viru Harbor to install a naval base for PT boats. On the 20th of June 1943, two companies of the 4th Raider Battalion under the command of Colonel Currin landed at Segi point and began to cross the jungle towards Viru Harbor. After 10 days of an exhausting march under continuous raining and across a swampy jungle, the Marines arrived near their objective. On the 1st July, after an planned air strike, Colonel Currin launched the attack, beginning with the capture of the outpost of Tombe by two Raiders platoons while the main body attacked the Japanese garrison in the rear near Tetemara village. At the end of the day, Viru Harbor was in US hands. The Raiders had suffered 13 KIA and 15 wounded while the Japanese garrison had lost 61 KIA and about a hundred wounded in the battle. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
