Historical Background:
In early January 1943, Rommel had made a new rear guard defensive line near Buerat in order to save most of his army by withdrawing to Tripoli first and then Tunisia. This defensive line was built on the cut given by the wadi ZemZem from the north to the south. The 90.Leichte Division defended the coastal road and the wadi while a kampfgruppe of the 15.Panzer Division, with all the remaining tanks of the Afrika Korps, was stationed in the south . On the 15th of January, Montgomery launched Operation FireEater : the 51st Highland Division, with the support of Valentine tanks of the 23rd Armoured Brigade, attacked the wadi ZemZem and the 7th Armoured Division and 2nd New Zealand Division advanced in the desert to bypass the German position by the south. A tank battle occurred in the Sedada area and the British lost 32 tanks. In the evening, expecting that his weaken troops could not contain the British offensive, Rommel ordered to withdraw towards the Tarhouna defensive position.
