Historical Background: On the 15th of March 1941, British General Platt launched a major offensive on the Italian defenses around Keren with troops of the 4th and 5th Indian Division. On the left side, the 5th Indian Brigade ordered to 4/11 Sikh to capture Mount Samanna. Composed of three mountaintops called Left Bump, Middle Bump and Right Bump, Mount Samanna was defended by the 1° Battallione Alpini of 10° Regimento di Granatieri di Savoia. Hill 1710, Left Bump, was captured early in the morning but for the two others objectives the Italian resistance was fierce and stopped the Indian advance. The commanding officer of 4/11 Sikh decided to stop the attack on Right Bump, too strong, and to concentrate the attack on Middle Bump. The attack resumed in the afternoon but Middle Bump stayed impregnable. Finally, at the end of the day when the Indian attack was over, only Left Bump had been captured. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history !
