Historical Background: After the battle of Kursk, German forces withdrew progressively on the Dniepr river to prepare a defensive line, the Panther-Wotan line. But on the 24th of September 1943, Russian armies reached the east bank of the river and as soon as began to cross in several places. On the night of 26th of September 1943, between Dniepropetrovsk and Zaporozhie, forwards units of the 6th and 12th armies undertook to cross the Dniepr river on makeshift rafts near the village of Voyskovoye. But warned by the noise, German soldiers opened fire on the river. Riflemen of the 203rd Guards Rifle Division and engineers of the 5th Pontoon Brigade charged the enemies positions with fixed bayonets. The battle raged all the day and the losses were very high for each belligerent. Finally, Russian units succeeded to set up a secure bridgehead on this place. 85 riflemen and engineers were awarded as hero of the Soviet Union after this battle. The liberation of Western Ukraine could begun. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
